Brexit clearly needs to be postponed

Ok I get it, we're stuck with the bastard thing but to do it now, in the middle of this chaos?

OP posts:
amicissimma · 21/12/2020 14:04

We have postponed it twice from March 2019 and October 2019. We left the EU in January 2020.

If we had left in March 2019 it wouldn't be 'in the middle of this chaos'.

Whether you like it or I like it is neither here nor there, that's what the elected government have arranged.

onlythepianoplayer · 21/12/2020 14:11

Postpone what? You've already left the EU, there is nothing to postpone

LillianGish · 21/12/2020 14:14

I think the current chaos is a convenient smokescreen for the chaos that will ensue after Brexit. No-one will be able to tell the difference and the Government will be able to blame everything on Covid - it's the only possible explanation for the totally incompetent handling of the current health crisis.

Whammyyammy · 21/12/2020 14:16

Ummmm..... we left the EU at the start of thus year......

Thewithesarehere · 21/12/2020 14:17

This is so true.
LaurieFairyCake · 21/12/2020 14:21

It's really clear the OP means EXTEND THE TRANSITION PERIOD Hmm

Which we obviously should since pretty much everything is UTTERLY FUCKED right now

notdaddycool · 21/12/2020 14:24

The agreement comes at the last minute, it's how the EU rolls. Let's get it over with. If we put it back 3/6 months we will get an agreement in 3/6 months and we'll all be in limbo. If we don't get an agreement I'm far from convinced it's the end of the world, although I'd rather we had one.

onlythepianoplayer · 21/12/2020 14:27

It's really clear the OP means EXTEND THE TRANSITION PERIOD hmm

why would the EU agree to that?

Crankley · 21/12/2020 14:32

The EU want to play hardball to discourage other countries from leaving. You could extend it for 50 years and they still wouldn't make a deal until the last minute of the 50th year. If no deal causes pain, it will be painful just as much for the EU and they know it.

Kendodd · 21/12/2020 14:36

Well the EU offered to extend the transition period to focus on covid in the summer. Boris Johnson, in his infinite wisdom, basically told them to go fuck themselves. It's too late now, plus the Brexit frothers wouldn't have it anyway. Leave voters can own this whole sorry mess.

onlythepianoplayer · 21/12/2020 14:37

It's impressive that you can be wrong so many times in one short paragraph. Nope, nope, nope and nope again. 0 out of 4, well done!!

CrotchetyQuaver · 21/12/2020 14:38

Brexit has already happened we are currently in the transition period which ends on 31.12.

HagenDaz · 21/12/2020 14:45

LillianGish has nailed it. This mess is to disguise the consequences of a No Deal Brexit and we aren’t allowed o to the streets to protest. Fckers, all of them.

Notonthestairs · 21/12/2020 14:46

Decide on deal/no deal now but extend transition until Easter when more of the population has been vaccinated would be sensible. And give businesses fuller/any guidance on what will happen and a better run up to the changes would also be beneficial. More time to get Port/border systems in place.

Fighting problems on multiple fronts doesn't seem like the best idea.

But agree Covid will be excellent cover for the mess and Brexiteers won't want to waste that.

OhWhyNot · 21/12/2020 14:55

Yes I think there needs to be (and I think probably will be) and extension of the transition period

There is far to much happening with the covid situation across Europe at present

And why wouldn’t the EU agree to this they are impacted by both too

onlythepianoplayer · 21/12/2020 15:05

It's your own government that didn't and doesn't want to extend it, not the EU.

VodselForDinner · 21/12/2020 15:09

You’ve already left.

Now you’re just tying up the resources of other EU nations on pointless buffoonery; resources that could be better spent on Covid issues.

Please just get your coats, and close the door behind you.

PizzaForOne · 21/12/2020 15:12

"We won. Get over it"

nosswith · 21/12/2020 15:34

The transition period should be postponed for 12 months. Focus all our energies on minimising the impact of Covid 19.

nosswith · 21/12/2020 15:35

The EU would agree and hopefully a capable UK Prime Minister can be in place soon instead of Mr Johnson to lead negotiations on the remaining 2% to be agreed.

onlythepianoplayer · 21/12/2020 16:06

The transition period is almost over. You can't postpone something that has already happened!

Lonelycrab · 21/12/2020 16:11

Of course extending the transition period would be the wise, sensible thing given the nature of this pandemic.

This government don’t do wise, or sensible though.

Buddytheelf85 · 21/12/2020 16:45

Hollow laugh when people say ‘we’ve already left’. You’re in for a shock.

I agree OP. Surely one thing most British people can probably agree on - leave or remain - is that crashing out of the EU without a deal and limited preparation is not a brilliant idea. I might be being naive but I don’t think many people who voted to leave in 2016 thought they were voting to leave without any kind of deal during the worst public health crisis in 100 years and the worst economic crisis since the 40s.

Any semi-responsible government would have sought to extent the transition period in light of the events of this year. An extension was on the table. Our government didn’t take it, and let the summer deadline for an extension go by ever so quietly while we were all looking the other way. Funny that. It’s almost as if they always knew Brexit was going to be a shitshow but spotted an opportunity to blame it on something else.

ArrowsOfMistletoe · 21/12/2020 16:52

No, no extension to transition. I'm sorry, but the people who voted for this shitshow need to feel the pain for a while. I am very sorry for the rest of us (self included) who did not vote for it, but all the Leave voters who still think it's all going to be fine, who voted for Boris last year, who still want to leave need to learn what the consequences of hubris are.

Orf1abc · 21/12/2020 17:02

The agreement comes at the last minute, it's how the EU rolls.

It's really not. The EU generally negotiates trading agreements with rational trading partners over an agreed timetable. But in normal times they don't have David Davis et al failing to even turn up to meetings.
