To not have the vaccine right now?

DJattheendoftheworld · 21/12/2020 12:30

I have been offered the vaccine through work. I work in a non patient facing role within a healthcare setting. I am very surprised to have been offered it and I know I'm very lucky. I should jump at the chance to have it. BUT I'm trying to conceive. There is a chance I could be pregnant now.

AIBU and selfish not have it?

And how do I tell work. Obvs don't want them to know I'm TTC.

It's not been tested on pregnant women. No point in being a guinea pig. Not exactly going too be the only one not to have it

00100001 · 21/12/2020 12:34

Do whatever you want,it's not compulsory

abersinas · 21/12/2020 12:35

If you are trying to conceive you are not eligible for the vaccine

ForestNymph · 21/12/2020 12:35

No, they're telling people to not get pregnant right after the vaccine so no don't have it.

Ivy455 · 21/12/2020 12:35

Of course you aren't BU. You are allowed to think of yourself.

Santastealer · 21/12/2020 12:36

Just tell them you are not eligible due to your health records. You don’t need to be any more specific.

Mariebarrone · 21/12/2020 12:37

Just say you have a condition that means you can’t have the vaccine. If anyone pushes this just tell them to mind their own business.

Mariebarrone · 21/12/2020 12:38

Snap Santa!!!

whiterabbitsweets · 21/12/2020 12:43

You're not selfish not to have it.

My eldest works in a nursing home and has turned the vaccine down. She's 20 and has deemed herself too low risk and that there are more needy out there.

As much as I want her to be safe, I can't fault her decision.

EmmetEmma · 21/12/2020 12:47

You are ineligible for it as you are possibly pregnant and trying to conceive.

So don’t have it and tell anyone who asks that you are ineligible.

DJattheendoftheworld · 21/12/2020 12:54

@Santastealer

I'll do this. Thanks all. I was just so surprised to be offered it today I panicked a bit.

I agree with the above....if pushed you could even say you have a history of allergic reactions or something.

doublehalo · 21/12/2020 13:09

Good call OP. Stay safe.

We won't know the side effects of this for several years.

KatieB55 · 21/12/2020 13:35

The leaflet for healthcare professionals says to avoid pregnancy for at least two months after the second vaccination. Are young doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals being told this I wonder? It's also not for use when breastfeeding.

ArrowsOfMistletoe · 21/12/2020 13:52

You're not eligible, so you should definitely not have it.

gypsywater · 21/12/2020 13:54

Definitely dont have it if you are TTC!
Just say to your manager that you cant have it for medical reasons and dont go into detail. You dont have to explain in detail why.

gypsywater · 21/12/2020 13:55

I'm patient facing NHS and I'm not going to have it due to TTC. Such is life.

ComtesseDeSpair · 21/12/2020 14:02

I don’t understand why it’s considered entirely unacceptable and massively selfish to say that you aren’t going to comply with tier rules or lockdown because they don’t suit your personal circumstances and you aren’t in a risk category and don’t know anyone vulnerable anyway; but totally acceptable to say you won’t be having the vaccine for the same reasons. Both are about looking after vulnerable people regardless of whether Coronavirus would affect you as an individual badly. To achieve the herd immunity which will protect those who cannot have the vaccine for medical reasons and those for whom it’s ineffective, we need wide take up of the vaccine. If I’m an evil granny killer for socialising, why aren’t people who are offered the vaccine but think their own circumstances should override it, also evil granny killers?

ForestNymph · 21/12/2020 14:03

Comtesse yes that is an interesting double standard. Personally I think both are acceptable and fine

gypsywater · 21/12/2020 14:11

If some people delay TTC, it could mean they never have a family...

yawnsvillex · 21/12/2020 14:18

@ComtesseDeSpair totally agree with you.

Makes me laugh the complete double standards on here.

modgepodge · 21/12/2020 14:18

I don’t think your daughter has been offered it for her own protection 🙄 Of course she has every right to turn it down for whatever reason she likes, but if she genuinely is only turning it down because she doesn’t think she is at risk and someone else needs it more, it might be worth pointing out she’s been offered it to protect those she works with, who are the most vulnerable.
gypsywater · 21/12/2020 14:23

I also dont understand why PP's daughter wouldnt have it if working in a nursing home and without any medical exemption? Seems a strange choice?

HyacynthBucket · 21/12/2020 14:23

The advice is not to have it if you are pregnant, isn't it?

gypsywater · 21/12/2020 14:26

No vaccine if pregnant, TTC or breastfeeding
