How much should I tip my cleaner for Xmas?

This is the first time we’ve had a cleaner and now it’s approaching Christmas, wondering what the etiquette is around tipping them? I was thinking £10 or £20 and a card? Or is that a bit stingy? They have been with us since august. Happy with their work, wouldn’t say they go above and beyond but they do what’s required. Thoughts welcome!

Bottle of wine?

Pipandmum · 20/12/2020 21:45

A weeks' wages is the norm I believe. That's what I'm going mine (coming tomorrow thank goodness)!

Pipandmum · 20/12/2020 21:46

Giving even!

Remxhah126 · 20/12/2020 21:46

I gave mine a card and a week's wages.

Nuie · 20/12/2020 21:47

Weeks wages and a gift. I always give mine the big box of M&S biscuits.

Leaannb · 20/12/2020 21:47

Custom here is a week's wages

happytoday73 · 20/12/2020 21:48

August this year and doing an OK job... Bottle of wine more than enough or another token gift...

HermioneWeasley · 20/12/2020 21:48

Given they’ve been with you a relatively short time I’d do £10 and a bottle of wine or box of chocolates.

Mine gets a week’s wages and a tin of biscuits, but she’s been with us for years and can pick and choose her clients. We also paid her through lockdown.

MrsPworkingmummy · 20/12/2020 21:48

I pay my cleaner £40 a week for 3 hours. Today, I paid her £60 plus a bottle of wine given it's Christmas.

sleepylittlebunnies · 20/12/2020 21:49

For this year as she’s only been with you 4 months I’d give a bottle of wine. Then see next year what you want to give.

AnathemaPulsifer · 20/12/2020 21:49

I usually give mine an extra £20 in a card and a bottle of wine.

MaggieFS · 20/12/2020 21:58

My cleaner isn't in this week or next as she comes on a Friday. I was thinking of giving her this week's pay as a Christmas bonus and not paying next week. Does that sound ok?

I didn't used to pay her if she didn't come, but with all the chaos during the first lockdown I agreed to continue to pay her even when she couldn't come and set up a standing order where previously we'd done cash, so if she didn't come she didn't get paid. She had one week off in the summer and I didn't stop the payment then. I felt awkward and didn't mention anything. I'm now on mat leave so money is tighter. I hope it would be ok for me to just say, I'll pay this week but not next?

stellarfox · 20/12/2020 22:00

Ours is £20 for 2 hours and comes weekly. We gave her an extra £20 this week

Scrumbleton · 20/12/2020 22:11

£50 (weeks wages) and a bottle of fizz

Oopsiedaisyy · 20/12/2020 22:52

Mine charges £24 every two weeks, I gave her £50 when she came last week

Merryoldgoat · 20/12/2020 23:10

I gave mine £50.

PapsofJura · 20/12/2020 23:11

I’m going to bump it up this year as we are about to go into full lockdown just after Christmas (in Scotland), so she won’t be in for a few weeks. She refused to take any cash during the last lockdown so this will be a way to give her extra cash that she will find acceptable.

Icequeen01 · 20/12/2020 23:21

I pay my cleaner £36 each week and gave her an extra £50 for Xmas.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 21/12/2020 01:25

It’s a tip - you only give it if you want to. An extra week’s money seems ridiculous.

RamblinRosie · 21/12/2020 02:45

I pay my cleaner £35 per week, I’ll give her an extra £50 plus a bottle of wine.

However she, her friends and family have cleaned for us for over 20 years, when someone can’t clean for us any more, we get passed on to someone else, brilliant! It’s a Polish cleaning mafia!

Worth every penny!

crazyrabbit · 21/12/2020 03:52

I just gave mine a bottle of wine.... This tipping culture is strange to me, with the exception of eating at a restaurant or letting the taxi driver keep the change, I wouldn’t even consider it. I am a support worker in a care home, and I usually get a bottle of wine or some chocolates.

Starseeking · 21/12/2020 10:12

Mine started in September, and usually receives £40 per week for 4 hours cleaning.

For Christmas I gave her:

  • £40 inside Christmas card
  • Wool scarf
  • Small box of chocolates
  • Tin of sweets for her DC

Good cleaners are hard to come by, and due to how the Bank holidays work this year, she's missing a week, so I figured it made sense to pay her an extra week as a tip.

Ah. Here we go. Why is it ridiculous?

We gave our cleaner 2 weeks pay plus some chocolates. Why wouldn’t we? We like her, trust her, she does a great job and we get bonuses with our jobs so why not pass that on?

Trisolaris · 21/12/2020 10:16

I’m giving mine an extra £40

Jangle33 · 21/12/2020 10:19

I gave mine an extra £50 - weekly wages are £40, plus extra presents that were probably an extra £30. I also paid her in full through lockdown. Good cleaners are worth their weight in gold and I value her. She also buys presents for whole family despite me telling her every year it’s unnecessary but very kind
