How much should I tip my cleaner for Xmas?

This is the first time we’ve had a cleaner and now it’s approaching Christmas, wondering what the etiquette is around tipping them? I was thinking £10 or £20 and a card? Or is that a bit stingy? They have been with us since august. Happy with their work, wouldn’t say they go above and beyond but they do what’s required. Thoughts welcome!

Card and a week's wages over here. More if I know they've had a rough time or if they go above and beyond.

Nanny I give two weeks wages extra because she is irreplaceable.

I've always given a week's wages and a token gift, such a box of chocs. In years where I'm tipping someone who's only recently started working with me, I've perhaps dropped it a bit for the first year.

People who I find especially good, I have raised it to 2 weeks' worth - or a rounded off value around that.

We have 2 cleaners for an hour a week.
We are giving them £20 in a card and a box of chocolates each

We've only had them since 1st lockdown eased but are always happy with their work

Week’s wages in a card.
We don’t have our cleaner any more because she also worked in a care home so quit working for us in April, and I’m really feeling it, but with four people at home full time it’s not really manageable to get a new one.

Mine will get £100 and a small Xmas present but she's been with me 15 years or more.

I’m giving mine £10 and a box of chocolates. If I gave her a weeks wages I’d be giving her more than I’m spending on family members. I’m quite amazed at people giving £50; for us a cleaner is a real luxury and we don’t get a Christmas bonus so we save all year for Christmas and £50 would be a lot of our budget

Mine is wonderful. She's here now and she brought us some homemade Polish gingerbread and a bottle of Plum gin. We gave her 50 quid in her card and some treats for her husband and kids.

We paid her throughout the first lockdown. She's worth every penny. Getting a good cleaner is a blessing. Prior to Covid she even sorted out cover when she took holidays.

She works with four other local families and she could take on triple her hours if she had capacity. I know at least one Uber mum whose tried to lure her away from us!

I don’t think of it as a tip, it’s a Christmas bonus 😊
Mine is getting £50 and a bottle of wine - she does a fantastic job and I like to show I appreciate how she makes my life easier!
My boss gave me a Christmas bonus and it made me feel valued - why would I not do the same for my cleaner!

JojoLapin · 21/12/2020 11:24

@CherryBlossomPink I totally agree with you. It is not a tip but a gift to acknowledge how much this person is valued. It is not mandatory but if you do not feel like being generous towards your cleaner, you need to find another one. Full weekly wage here in a Christmas card with a gift.
