To run my last 26 miles?

DailyPotion · 20/12/2020 16:17

I have another 26 miles to run to make a round 1000 for the year. I've been running for years but I've never got close to that before.

I haven't run for the last 2 weeks because I've had Covid.

So, my isolation is finished and I'm allowed to run but I'm still feeling quite unwell. Much better than I was, but very tired still and have a cough. I'd could usually do 26 miles in a week, but I've been poorly, so would usually build back slowly once fully recovered.

Would it be really stupid to finish the 1000? - YABU

You can't get so close and not finish - YANBU

Be careful @DailyPotion - I had covid in October and am back to normal running now, probably fine for the last month, but started with just a mile at a time about 2 weeks post symptoms.

omg35 · 20/12/2020 16:26

I think you have a good excuse not to finish tbh but I understand why you'll feel gutted bit to do the last few miles

FitterHappierMoreProductive · 20/12/2020 16:28

Go out for a gentle jog and see how you go? I’d find it hard not to finish that off when so close!

Goinghome20 · 20/12/2020 16:29

Do it. Walk it if you need to

Yes. I'm thinking if I try 1 mile tomorrow and add a mile a day, I've got plenty of time. If I leave it another week, I'll be trying to cram it all into 3-4 days.

Don’t do it. Sometimes you have to realise your limitations. I used to regularly swim 5km. One day I felt a bit wobbly and realised I could either swim the last 100 metres or get out the pool unaided. I had to abandon my swim to use the last of my energy to get to my locker and find some food. Annoying!

nosswith · 20/12/2020 16:30

Good luck, hope your health improves and you do it.

BiscuitDrama · 20/12/2020 16:31

Have you been for walks and so on? I am post covid and finding any more than a ten minute walk puts me back in bed for two days.

DailyPotion · 20/12/2020 16:31

I did consider this, but it feels like cheating, not that anyone but me would care, but I'd feel like I hadn't really done it.

No don't do it, I think as you are in early stages of recovery you will completely wipe your self out and it's not worth it. Be kind to yourself, rest and hopefully by January you'll be in a good place to start again

DailyPotion · 20/12/2020 16:32

I did walk for about an hour on muddy hills yesterday. I wanted a nap when I got home but I was fine while I was out.

Did you start on Jan 1st? If not could you allow yourself a few more days into the new year so you do the distance within 365 days if not within a calendar year. Or just add on extra days for the time you've been ill.

Chanjer · 20/12/2020 16:33

I had covid and went back into hard climbing quickly

YMMV

Keep an eye on yourself and if it's taking too much out of you then sack it off

user1471459476 · 20/12/2020 16:34

I've done a 1000kms two years in a row so I understand the pressure. I wouldn't want to walk it as it wouldn't feel right. Could you "Jeff" it? Run/walk very gently obviously

RandomUsernameHere · 20/12/2020 16:35

Maybe try and take it easy at first and see how you recover? You still have 11 days left. Hope you're better soon.

FlyingFlamingo · 20/12/2020 16:35

Don’t do it. I tested positive just over 2 weeks ago and although I think I’m ok at times I am still exhausted - yesterday we went for a walk and I was fine, today I walked further (4 miles, not a problem for me at all pre Covid) and I’ve had to spend the rest of the day on the sofa! Can you walk it instead, slowly building up?

I think a lot of my tiredness could be put down to not having any appetite for 2 weeks - are you eating well?

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 20/12/2020 16:36

I would try a mile a day and see how I went. If I then really couldn't build up to more, I would cycle the last few remaining miles and consider the 1000 done. Good luck xxx

sunshineandshowers40 · 20/12/2020 16:36

Are you able to get out everyday? I would try and get to 1000 miles but I am a little running obsessed! How far did you use to run before you got ill?

whereisthejoy · 20/12/2020 16:39

Yes. I'm thinking if I try 1 mile tomorrow and add a mile a day, I've got plenty of time. If I leave it another week, I'll be trying to cram it all into 3-4 days.

I think that's a good idea.

You could always add the missed covid weeks... who doesn't need an extra two weeks of 2020 🤣

Oldraver · 20/12/2020 16:40

If you not feeling well then dont do it but

26 miles over two weeks isnt much to walk

A few years ago a friend said he aimed for a 1000 miles in a year. Then I realised a school run of 1.5 miles would add up to more than that

Jumbojem · 20/12/2020 16:41

I think it's a great achievement to get this close, even if you don't quite make it. There is always next year (it's my goal for 2021). I think take it easy, start short and slow and judge how you are feeling. Hope you get back to full strength soon. Good luck!

Bearsbearsbears40 · 20/12/2020 16:47

Well done! I think I’d try to walk as much of the remaining distance as possible. To still complete 1000m somehow in the midst of a global pandemic is amazing, don’t be hard on yourself and push too much.

(I’m on about 850km running, walking and cycling this year, nowhere near, so doing just a bit each day to see where it gets me by 31st)

FlappingPancakes · 20/12/2020 16:49

See how you feel. Like others on the thread, I had Covid in March and it took months for me to run properly again (but I am not particularly fit nor interested in exercise!).

Btw I found my VO2 Max decreased massively after Covid. It's only now started going back to the levels it was before I had it. I don't monitor these things much as I am no expert but it was noticeable.

speak2me · 20/12/2020 16:52

I would run/walk/run it if I could I think, to try and not overdo it. I'm 15km off my 2020km target so I understand the pain of being so close!

ScrapThatThen · 20/12/2020 16:54

Please don't. These post viral syndromes are nasty and could debilitate you for more than 6 months. Find a way to make peace with it but please don't run it until at least mid January.
