To run my last 26 miles?

I have another 26 miles to run to make a round 1000 for the year. I've been running for years but I've never got close to that before.

I haven't run for the last 2 weeks because I've had Covid.

So, my isolation is finished and I'm allowed to run but I'm still feeling quite unwell. Much better than I was, but very tired still and have a cough. I'd could usually do 26 miles in a week, but I've been poorly, so would usually build back slowly once fully recovered.

Would it be really stupid to finish the 1000? - YABU

You can't get so close and not finish - YANBU

Don’t do it. Take super good care of yourself instead.

It will take greater strength of character to put your health and wellbeing above finishing your goal.

Bump your goal to next year. Covid can rob you of finishing your target miles - that you can live with. Don’t let it rob you of your health and wellbeing a moment longer than it needs to. Your job now is to get well. Put your competitive streak into that.

These post viral syndromes are nasty and could debilitate you for more than 6 months

They are, but they're not well understood that it's simply related to premature return to exercise, and gentle exercise is often a good thing (and I hope someone who's already done 20miles a week for a year can run quite gently and still be running and know enough to do it)

You also have to balance the loss of fitness over 2 weeks (which is surprisingly lot, although it recovers reasonably quickly as it's all easy lost/easy gained adjustments) that can make the run all feel rubbish even if it's nothing to do with the virus and it would feel just as rubbish as you'd taken 2 weeks off doing nothing. VO2max drops more than 10% from just 2 weeks off, and doesn't return unless you return to exercise.

I certainly wouldn't do something simply for the 1000 mile goal, but a return to exercise is important, remaining sedentary is not good, but without knowing exactly the state the OP is in, nor they're mental state on how much they'd push.

Have a go. Take it very steady and run walk. If it's too much stop.

The official position on this is that a year when you have Covid has 13 months. So you have until the end of January to complete your 1000 miles.

You can start off walking short distances now and see how you feel.

I am the official invigilator for the imaginary running 1000 miles in a year committee and am very pleased to tell you that under the covid exemption scheme you are allowed to put Strava on all day and count every step you take in a day towards the total. You will still receive your imaginary medal. Well done and don’t push yourself to run it as running with covid is a rubbish idea.

It’s probably not sensible, but I’d struggle to not at least try if I were that close.

I'd try the one mile tomorrow & see how it goes.. Go for Maffletone or Galloway methods if feels good.

Do be careful. The main recommendation I see for recovery from COVID is to take it very slowly or you can really set yourself back.

I wouldn’t do it. There have been so many people that have had a big step back in recovery from pushing them selves. I would add on the weeks you’ve been ill onto next year once you feel better and do it then.
