To ask what you'd do if you were alone at Xmas?

I'll start by saying I know I'm lucky to have this dilemma and to not be spending very much time alone, but I'm feeling pretty down about it so please, I'm not starting a I have it worse competition...

First Christmas since breaking up with DH, after 17 years. Plan was for him to come round Xmas day, have dinner with us then take the kids home with him. My mum and dad were going to come and then from mid afternoon I'd see my boyfriend, who is my support bubble... Clearly that's not allowed now, even though it's ridiculous because if the kids are going between us it's the same risk, but whatever. Boyfriend isn't now coming because his flatmate will be left alone if he does. I'm not even getting into how pissed off I am that he's chosen flatmate over me but hey ho
So now probably I'll have to drop the kids off at midday after presents. I've got a massive fucking turkey in the freezer plus all the Xmas Dinner prepped that we were going to have..

It's OK, could be worse. So I'm thinking cook the bloody turkey, send him and the kids home with their dinner, I'll have mine... Apart from drinking solidly until I get them back on the 27th, any ideas won't be seeing bf, the twat

What would you do with lots of lovely sad lonely drinking time peace and quiet on Christmas day?

Bath, wine, new books and chocolate. Carols on quietly in the background. Maybe a wander round the village to look at people’s lights once it was dark. Whatever you do, hope it is lovely.

Having a busy house with young kids makes me crave peace, quiet and time on my own. I know that reality would be really lonely though. In your shoes, I’d order myself some lovely new pyjamas, nice bubble bath, a Christmas candle and a good book. All from John Lewis, as they do free next day click and collect to a Waitrose store or Amazon. Then I’d buy canapés and treats to eat. Make sure I’ve got a fluffy blanket for the sofa (and an oil-filled radiator if your house is cold). Then I’d happily hibernate and sleep lots.

P.s. I’d be really very pissed off with the boyfriend and have a think about how/if I wanted to waste energy on someone who doesn’t have you high up their priority list

Don't be daft - cook the turkey, invite your ex to come over and share it as you seem to be reasonably amicable, and have a nice time with the kids.
The boyfriend might not be a keeper. Unless you're into threesomes.

Thinking dinner, nice walk (I'd say run but I intend on eating lots.. ) afternoon nap, TV, film no one else would want to watch and then a bath, lovely

Do the run, earlier in the day, and then feel smug as you'll have earned all that indulgence!

He is not a keeper because he doesn't want his longtime friend and roommate to be alone on Christmas Day? That should make him a keeper

If it was me I'd get every ready meal I liked from m and s. Nice snacks bits and netflix snd chill for the 3 days. With nice wine and I'd just love it.

Can the flatmate not come too? You have support bubbled with the household surely not the person?

The flatmate is also in your bubble.

Theghostofchristmasarse · 20/12/2020 21:08

Haha no... He's practically a hermit. Hates people. Hates Christmas, doesn't celebrate it or birthdays.. Not someone I want to spend Christmas day with...
It's OK, it's all speculation now anyway, as now DD has a weird rash, which apparently can go with a covid diagnosis so we are getting a test tomorrow.

I'm spending most of Xmas day alone... Making myself a nice ham, some roast potatoes... And chill.

MrsLebowski · 20/12/2020 21:15

Well if I were having Christmas alone it would be a very chilled out day of eating a lot and watching my favourite films plus surfing the internet. A little walk if the weather is nice. Chat to my mum on messenger as we both hate zoom.

I would make sure the house was spotless and I had my favourite foods/drinks in. I'd have a long bath, do face mask etc put new comfy clothes on. I'd eat whatever I wanted, video call my best friend who is usually alone on xmas day. I'd watch whatever I fancied and get pleasantly tipsy! As I usually cook and run around after everyone, I'd enjoy the peace. Though I'd miss my kids.
