To have an anything goes xmas dinner?

So it will just be the 5 of us, DH, DD 10, DS 8, DD, 9 months. It is a weird year, DD's first xmas and it could be a bit rubbish without seeing our family so thought this may make it fun.

I'm thinking of letting everyone choose a course/aspect of the meal. If I know my family and I think I do, then I have a feeling we will be eating sushi, tacos, steak and chocolate pudding at xmas.

That sounds fun! Do it.

ForestNymph · 19/12/2020 13:04

Go for it. We don't cook Christmas Dinner here, its fine. Do what works for you.

gillybean2 · 19/12/2020 13:05

We always have what we want, not what is ‘expected’ for Xmas dinner. Go for it.

Chanjer · 19/12/2020 13:06

I'm spending Christmas with my mum, the rest of the family are having a get together

We've agreed Tournedos Rossini for dinner. Making a special meal for 2 in a traditional Christmas style doesn't seem that practical

Twistiesandshout · 19/12/2020 13:09

I'm already excited at the prospect! Grin

(I also secretly hate roast dinners so it is win win)

Make yourselves happy - goodness knows everyone needs it after the year we've had.

You're unlikely to be hauled before the international court of Christmas lunch even if you choose to have a ham sandwich and a bottle of champagne, à la Elizabeth David 😂. Merry Christmas 🎅🏼

Beekeeper1 · 19/12/2020 13:13

Yup, have what you like! Swim against the stream - only dead fish go with the flow! Traditional turkey is foul anyway (pun intended), bland, tasteless, dry, yuck!

Mine is going to be an East African goat curry with ugali!

ComeOnGordon · 19/12/2020 13:13

My dd was never a fan of a roast and I’m not the best at cooking it so we’ve had all sorts over the years but for the last few have had an Italian buffet. I prep lots of it in advance so Xmas day is then fairly chilled

mummax3 · 19/12/2020 13:18

I love this, definitely do it! It's nice to do something different and something that you'll enjoy xxx

nosswith · 19/12/2020 13:21

It is not obligatory to have a roast dinner. If you enjoy it and it is healthy food, why not? Another thing to remember from a unique Christmas.

Murinae · 19/12/2020 13:24

We have a traditional dinner but with prawn cocktail starters. Kids hate prawns so have ham, one hates salad so has ham and carrot sticks. We also have chicken rather than turkey and one kids hates unprocessed meat so hate chicken nuggets with hers. I mean who really cares as long as everyone is happy??

StickTheKettleOnAlice · 19/12/2020 13:24

It wouldn't be for me as I love a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings but if it makes you and your family happy go for it op! It isn't about anybody else but you and your family and would be a boring world if we all had the same taste!
I will be prepping in advance and cutting corners to make it as easy as possible!

We did this a couple of years ago- everyone had their favourite thing. It was nice, and made a change, but although we find ourselves unexpectedly on our own again this year, I won’t be doing it again.

Itmaybeus · 19/12/2020 13:31

We do similar 3 dc choose all menu for Christmas day.
Having Mexican themed food for lunch and a picnic tea this year. Last year it was Indian inspired and giant pigs in blanket sandwiches for tea.
I'd rather have happy children who enjoy their meal rather than eating a meal their not as keen on that's taken hours to prepare.
Enjoy.

EileenGC · 19/12/2020 13:42

Do it. We did it several times when we were younger, those Christmas dinners were the best ones.

VimFuego101 · 19/12/2020 14:49

That sounds fun. I will never understand why people grimly insist on sticking to a roast while complaining they don't even like turkey that much Grin

user1493413286 · 19/12/2020 14:50

That sounds like a lot better than a turkey dinner!

I really like turkey dinner, not sure why that makes me a 'dead fish' or are you only really living if you eat goat curry on Christmas Day Hmm

AndcalloffChristmas · 19/12/2020 14:53

Sounds brilliant!

SwedishK · 19/12/2020 15:09

We’re not doing Christmas dinner either, haven’t done for years. We just go together to our big Waitrose (special treat) and we all just fill the trolley with stuff we like and then we make a buffet. We all cook together and it’s sometimes a weird combination of different food but we love it. Not sure we’ll be allowed to all go together this year though so we might have to go two and two.

emilyfrost · 19/12/2020 15:11

It’s your family, do what suits you, but I would personally hate that.

speakout · 19/12/2020 15:16

Go for it if that is what you want.

Personally I wouldn't - as making so many different items may be a lot of work, and could end up a dogs dinner on the plate- sushi with gravy type of thing.

You deserve to have fun too, I would keep the meal simple, something that everyone will enjoy, then set something up like an ice cream station for dessert for everyone to help themselves.

BrieAndChilli · 19/12/2020 15:20

We all absolutely love roast dinner so I don’t think that makes us a dead fish 🤣.
We did do one year with just a party buffet but we all agreed it wasn’t the same. Roast dinner is probably the only meal that everyone agrees 100% on so it’s actually the easiest meal for me to make with out anyone complaining!!

Sparklesocks · 19/12/2020 15:37

All bets are off this year. I think everyone should do whatever they would like best, or is easiest for them - whether that be a full roast with all the trimmings or a frozen pizza followed by a gallon of Ice cream.
