So it will just be the 5 of us, DH, DD 10, DS 8, DD, 9 months. It is a weird year, DD's first xmas and it could be a bit rubbish without seeing our family so thought this may make it fun.

I'm thinking of letting everyone choose a course/aspect of the meal. If I know my family and I think I do, then I have a feeling we will be eating sushi, tacos, steak and chocolate pudding at xmas.

DD’s worst nightmare is any kind of Sunday dinner. She hates every part of it. I firmly believe you should get to eat whatever you love/fancy on Xmas day so this year she’s asked for my spag Bol. I’ll make it Xmas Eve coz it’s even better reheated. DH and I will have steak. Easy and quick.

A low point was the year when DD asked for tinned ravioli but she loved it Grin

Xmas day should never include eating food you’re not keen on. I say go for it!

Sounds like a great idea and you could all be responsible for a course and do a come dine with me

willowmelangell · 19/12/2020 16:28

Ooh sounds fun! I was going to do the Jamie Oliver stuffed boneless turkey thigh or maybe a Chinese Takeaway if any are open. The takeaway option was inspired by another thread.
Dd likes carbonara. I like salmon.

Do it Smile

Last two years we have had pizza delivered. This year we're having a all day buffet 😋

BillysMyBunny · 19/12/2020 17:12

Sounds great! Do it, and please report back with your finalised menu!

mrsbyers · 19/12/2020 17:34

I’d prefer that to a glorified Sunday dinner - we aren’t having a formal lunch at all , going to have a load of party food instead

Liverbird77 · 19/12/2020 18:47

We gave a buffet because I want the kids to be free to play.

StickTheKettleOnAlice · 21/12/2020 12:16

We have a buffet Christmas night and new years eve etc so it would be overkill if we had it Christmas day too. Party food is okay but a poor substitution for a full dinner with all the trimmings and things on it we wouldnt have any other time. Each to their own but I'd be disappointed with a pizza and abit sick of it as we tend to eat alot of Italian and all the other things through the year! Sure we have roast dinners but not very often tbh and not with all of the same additions we will have on our Christmas dinner. I also find it no extra effort than alot of other meals tbh but do only cook for 5 or 6 max.
You have to do what makes you happy and hope your dh is on the same page; it must
be tough for those couples that disagree!

Your house, your rules but is always a highlight in our family.

Go for it , used to have a next door neighbour that was a kiwi, on an exchange from the RNZAF (NZ air force). Christmas day he used to have a bbq every year,
whatever the weather.
Used to turn into a very well attended meal every year by all the neighbours, was so much more fun that the 'norm', sadly he went home afterwards 3 years.

Fluffybutter · 21/12/2020 15:27

Have what ever you like , it’s your Christmas!
We love Christmas dinner so having turkey and all the trimmings and we have so much of it as obviously Christmas with other family was cancelled so will be eating turkey all week!

VeganVeal · 21/12/2020 16:00

I love a good spit roast personally

Ikeameatballs · 21/12/2020 16:10

We are having a buffet this year. We had hoped to eat out but we are inTier 3 so that’s not possible so we are doing this instead. I’m not convinced that it will be less work than Xmas dinner but I don’t do the cooking, dp does, so I can’t complain.

Does eating a roast dinner really take a large chunk out of a child’s playing time? Unless you are using them to scrub the oven in between course they will have plenty of time to play!!
mrsbyers · 22/12/2020 23:17

You’ve quoted the wrong person , no kids needing playtime here just adults who are having a stress free day grazing on party food

Nousernameforme · 23/12/2020 01:05

I'm another one who thinks that everyone should be able to look forward to their Christmas dinner and waiting for an online shop tomorrow. We will be having ifits as in if it's there we will have it. The stress has completely gone. Whatever is missing tomorrow it doesn't matter we can cobble a buffet together which everyone will be happy with bits of and not much cooking.
