AIBU to pay 200.00 extra for new Xbox

Hey my DS ( 13 ) wanted the new Xbox, I didn’t manage to get hold of one at all. So I put the money in a card for him so we could purchase it after Xmas.
However it now turns out I can not spend Xmas day with him as his sister age 7 is in hospital. Someone locally is selling one but for a 200.00 profit which I can collect tomorrow.
Would you just suck it up and buy it for more despite that it makes me made that people do it !!! His birthday is the same week and I’m not even sure right now If I can be there for that.

Can you afford it - massive part of the decision.

Will this leave you struggling at all eg still have money for car repairs etc

Sparklesocks · 18/12/2020 21:13

Purely depends on how easily you can afford it and if it would cause difficulty later in the month.

Coasterfan · 18/12/2020 21:14

We are desperate for a PS5 and cannot get one and I refuse to pay over the odds on eBay so no I wouldn’t for an Xbox either. I think it’s disgusting the way people are buying the stock then selling it for overinflated prices. DS is 11 and understands they are in short supply so he is having a bike and will get the PS5 as soon as they are available in January/February. The only way to stop private sellers buying the stock and making vast profit is not to buy from them in my opinion.

Mousehole10 · 18/12/2020 21:15

I’d do it if you can afford it.

bananabob · 18/12/2020 21:16

Nooo don't pay that much more for one. Your 13 year old is old enough to understand and wait a bit longer it's not as bad at this age as when they're little and excited Father Christmas is bringing them something 😁 my 13 year old wants one too but he's gonna have to wait.

Mycircusmymonkey · 18/12/2020 21:17

I wouldn’t only on the basis that if there is a fault you may not be able to return it to a shop for an exchange.

bungaloid · 18/12/2020 21:26

Don't feed the scalpers.

Rhynswynd · 18/12/2020 21:27

I wouldn’t for all the reasons pp have said but mostly that you have no warranty and the scalpers are arseholes.

ShalomToYouJackie · 18/12/2020 21:36

As others have said, I wouldn't. It's a really lovely idea but I think it's too risky as no warranty, could get scammed v easily and wouldn't want to give those arseholes any profit

ShalomToYouJackie · 18/12/2020 21:37

Ps hope his sister is okay

Whattheactual20201 · 18/12/2020 21:44

Yeh I never had any intention of doing it until now I feel guilty :(

Agreed! Don't do it.

CringeMinge · 18/12/2020 21:51

Usually I'd say absolutely no.

But given that you've got a child in hospital and won't be celebrating Xmas day with him either, and likely his buddy on the same week. I think I'd do it as long as the seller can give you receipts or whatever from his purchase so if it's faulty you can use the guarantee. They've only recently launched.

If it was just the case of normal standard Xmas I'd say no, he's old enough to understand but with the year they've had, him not having you there for the day or bday and worrying about his sister too. I think I'd do it if I could afford it.

CringeMinge · 18/12/2020 21:52

If they can't give you receipts or transfer warranty details to you etc then I wouldn't do it.

AlwaysLatte · 18/12/2020 21:52

We've promised both of ours an Xbox series x but can't get them anywhere. I refuse to buy one for an over inflated price from a console tout. We've bought them other things and promised the xboxes as soon as they are available in a legitimate shop. Hopefully these bots that go about snapping up supplies will soon be illegal Angry

Sign up to stock alert sites. I got one on Amazon this morning

sofiaaaaaa · 18/12/2020 21:55

Is the listing 100% legit? All accessories included, fully functional, proof of purchase etc? Is the warranty tied to their account or anything?

If you’re going to do this, just buy it from somewhere like eBay/PayPal/on your card, as at least you’ll have recourse if something goes wrong.

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 18/12/2020 21:55

I wouldn't - think what else you could buy with that £200.

When your son is older what he will appreciate isn't an expensive Xbox but other fun things, my ds (a couple of years older then yours) had his birthday this week and what he liked most was some rude funny pencils Grin
covetingthepreciousthings · 18/12/2020 21:57

This, it would be a no from me OP. Also please be very careful that it's not a scammer.

sofiaaaaaa · 18/12/2020 21:58

Does he have an Xbox already? If so, I don’t think getting the new one a couple of weeks before they restock will be that exciting as there aren’t many new games out yet.

Why don’t you buy him a ££/£££ Xbox gift card so he can buy some digital games/content? I’m sure he’ll have lots of fun with that on his current console whilst you’re away?

Nottherealslimshady · 18/12/2020 21:58

Usually, absolutely not. But he's going to be on his own for christmas and probably his birthday so I'd spend more to make sure he has something exciting to do and can talk to friends as and when they get online.

UghNotThisAgain36 · 18/12/2020 22:01

@bungaloid

Don't feed the scalpers.
This. Also, you have no idea if its a genuine console.

Hope your DD gets well soon Flowers

DigitalGhost · 18/12/2020 22:02

Don't do it! Speaking as someone who has one I would have waited to get one if it was going to cost another £200. There's nothing you can play on it that you can't play on the previous Xbox.

Hill1991 · 18/12/2020 22:08

I wouldn't do it personally if he's at the age off knowing that they are in short supply he would understand, also there are scams going around with people ripping people off with the new Xbox's and Ps5s and there isn't one it's just a plastic copy
