Last day of work - what should I do

Whitewhite · 18/12/2020 10:18

I started work last month in a call centre answering calls. The role is really rubbish - I am abused on a daily basis verbally, screamed and shouted at. The company I work for deals with a contract on behalf of the government. It’s a temporary role and thank goodness I secured a new job after Christmas which is more in line with my degree and experience.

This role was taken purely for extra income during the coronavirus whilst I looked for an alternative.

So 2 weeks ago I handed In my notice. According to the calculator online I have 3.6 days holiday which the company scheduled in for me - I was not asked when suited me.

One day I was working and was notified 1.5 hours into my shift that it was actually a holiday. So I logged off. I work from home & there is zero support or help. It’s been awful.

Today is my last day. I have asked for this 1.5 hour back but no one is getting back to me. My manager said planning are “being funny about it”.

To make matters worse I got paid today and they have have deducted 6 hours for holiday entitlement.

I have no idea why they have taken this 6 hours off my wages but this 6 hours plus the 1.5 hours I am owed means I am working today for nothing.

I have emailed payroll but won’t get a response any time soon and really wonder if I will ever get this back.

I feel like logging off and saying explaining why. Or do I just work today even though I feel like it is unfair.

If you've already been paid t and you've worked the the hours you've been paid for then you don't need to work anymore hours. So long as neither of you owe the other money or hours then it's all even.

Whitewhite · 18/12/2020 10:35

I’ve been paid but I’m scheduled to work today and they have deducted holiday pay out of my final wage even though I have only taken my allocated holidays.

freezedriedromance · 18/12/2020 10:43

But if you've taken more holiday than you've accrued this holiday year then you'll owe the company for that in your last wage.

Cooltalkin · 18/12/2020 10:45

‘6 hours plus the 1.5 hours I am owed means I am working today for nothing. ‘

Mail them and tell them you are logging off , in line with your paid hrs ‘

Then have a lovely ‘ holiday’ day doing what you want to

So ‘ planning’ are being funny ??? Weak manager at best , cf at worst

Look forward to your new job , and don’t give it a second thought

Aprilx · 18/12/2020 10:50

To be honest I would probably have written off the 1.5 hours as being my mistake. But I don’t understand the holiday deduction thing when you say you were owed holidays rather than you had taken too many. So I would follow up on that. Or maybe just take the day off today and get your moneys worth that way considering you have already been paid.

Whitewhite · 18/12/2020 10:56

So when I go to the government website I type in my start date 03/11/20 to 18/12/20. Working 40 hours 5 days a week. I have taken 3.6 days (not including the 1.5 hours) and now they have deducted £60 out of my wages. All it says it’s holiday entitlement. So they must believe I have taken too much holiday. But how can I when they allocated these holidays when I put my notice in and I have taken the right holidays according to the holiday.

I would write the 1.5 hours off but we get scrutinised to the second we are online. If we answer the door or go to the toilet we need to work 47 seconds over our shift or whatever time we were away. So there’s no way I’m letting 1.5 hours go.

It’s your last day, you have been (under)paid, they sound like horrible employers, you are starting a new job in the new year so I’m assuming your reference is all locked in...what is stopping you from just logging off? What can they do?

Whitewhite · 18/12/2020 11:00

My references were only sent away last week so a bit concerned if I log off it may impact that.

OP posts:
MoreDrunkThanBlessed · 18/12/2020 11:01

I wouldn’t just log off as it would impact other call handlers, and customers as there would be one less person available to take calls. It’s not their fault your manager has been rubbish.

AppleKatie · 18/12/2020 11:09

It may not be fair or right but what I would do is stay logged on. Do the minimum whilst drinking tea and then at the end of your shift today lot out and don’t give this job/place any further headspace.

You’ve got a lovely new life waiting after Christmas it just isn’t worth it.

GrettaGreen · 18/12/2020 11:10

Is your contract 40 hours? Or is this your working hours and you've maybe counted unpaid breaks as part of it accidentally? Either way, I'd just email saying you feel unwell, best of luck yada yada.

Whitewhite · 18/12/2020 11:14

I asked my manager to chase it up explaining that I feel like I’m working for nothing today including the 1.5 hours I’m owed.

No reply so will see.

I work 9:30-6pm with 1 hour unpaid break. I used the calc based on working 5 days per week and that’s what it calculated- 3.6 days. Planning scheduled my holidays and adjusted these following my notice to leave so that makes me feel it is right as Wel. I didn’t ask for any holidays they simply notified me when I was due to be on holiday. And it was random so 2 hours on one day 2 hours on another even down to 22 minutes holiday.

If they’ve sent your reference off and you’ve had confirmation from your new employer that they’ve finished their pre-employment checks I would just log off. They sound awful!

If they’ve booked holidays in for you I think someone’s probably accidentally booked an extra day which is why you’ve had it docked.

ChikiTIKI · 18/12/2020 11:24

I'd probably work but say you need paying. When did you say you were paid? They should do a supplementary payroll every month to make corrections so try and get added to that. You should call your manager and say "am I logging off or getting the money for today?"

Bluehasnoclue · 18/12/2020 11:25

In your contract, how many holiday days are you entitled to?

If it’s the minimum 28 per year including bank hols then because you only worked 6 full weeks you are entitled to 3.2 days of holiday from what I understand.

Still doesn’t really add up though. Sorry OP sounds like a rubbish situation. Can you call your manager or payroll directly to get an immediate answer so you can decide?

Bookriddle · 18/12/2020 11:28

I would log off and fuck them off, you will get all the heros come on here and tell you to work tho!

RedBetty · 18/12/2020 11:29

Hi OP.

Did your work tell you that you were entitled to the 3.6 days or did you take that from the online website?

If you've been paid already, then you can log off, but a word of warning as I've previously worked in that industry. Extreme though it sounds, they might try to recover further money from you ie from now till 6pm (minus lunch). Without mentioning the comp, if it begins with a C then they may.

Also, depending on your future plans, it's a small world and for the sake of the rest of today, I'd just be mindful if you might need another temp job.

Believe me I know, call centres are savage. Good luck for your future.

Whitewhite · 18/12/2020 11:34

Yes it begins with a C - you may be right. I don’t feel like I can log off without worry so I will continue until I get some solution. Hopefully, never again.

They didn’t tell me the holiday entitlement- that’s just what I’ve worked out online but they did schedule all holidays so makes me think it’s not an error. If I’m told that I’ve taken too many holidays then absolutely fine. It’s the fact I’m taking verbal abuse and handling difficult calls for what feels like nothing.

It sounded too familiar OP 😊. I'd hang on, maybe have "IT issues".

They'll have worked out your allowance so it's probably right, but poor show that you manager is saying they can't deduct the 1.5 hours at least

Whitewhite · 18/12/2020 11:45

Even for it issues on your end you get pay taken so I guess I’ll be on til 6 o’clock - roll on!

Unbelievable OP. I left a few years ago, as a manager because a lot of the autonomy was being taken away. People were becoming number (resources) , but that's really shocking.
Aprilx · 18/12/2020 11:57

How many days leave have you taken since you started?

Whitewhite · 18/12/2020 11:59

3.6 ( well really less as I’m owed 1.5 hours which I did not take) but they have in the system that I took 3.6

FFS, do you work for free? Why should OP give a toss about customers who scream at her?
