Can no longer bite through cello tape anymore

Just that really. I remember as a teen I used to be able to bite through cello tape when wrapping things, no problem. Then I had braces in my mid teens and I can no longer do this. I've just been wrapping something now and couldn't find the scissors so in a rush just tried to bite some tape off the roll but couldn't seem to do it so asked my partner instead. It feels odd like my teeth are weak or something. Some one else I know mentioned they have the exact same problem as me a while back. I also mentioned it to my dentist and they just shrugged it off. Has anymore else experienced this? Aibu to think braces made my teeth weaker?Hmm

I broke my tooth once biting through tape - dentist told me it was really common, so I am now very wary of doing it.... So I'd be thankful you can't do it anymore!

toomanyplants · 17/12/2020 16:42

Braces wouldn't have necessarily made the teeth weaker, but your occlusion (the way you bite together) may well have changed.

FlibbertyGiblets · 17/12/2020 16:42

One: no mouth should be near presents atm, eeeeewwwww.

Two: teeth wear down over time.

Three: use scissors or get one of those natty dispensers, bonus point for the ones you wear on your wrist.

HTH

Sello.

Pascha · 17/12/2020 16:43

I just tear it. Much neater.

snookercue · 17/12/2020 16:45

I genuinely thought you were trying to bite the strings of a cello at first.

You mean sellotape? You shouldn't be biting it anyway - covid?

InTheNightWeWillWish · 17/12/2020 16:45

I think it’s the sellotape. We have a dispenser and it’s not getting through the sellotape. This is also the dispenser that came with the sellotape Hmm

Madeupwithit · 17/12/2020 16:49

I think it's probably your bite has changed. I had braces 2 years ago (I'm 50). Before the braces I could bite tape to tear it, afterwards 8 couldn't. My teeth don't 'meet' the same way.

Madeupwithit · 17/12/2020 16:49

*I couldn't

actiongirl1978 · 17/12/2020 16:50

I have this problem.

It felt like my bottom middle teeth where they are slightly flat have got really weak.

I've never used scissors always teeth.

iDontReally · 17/12/2020 16:55

Ah, yes 'sellotape'Grin I wasn't wrapping a present actually, I was wrapping a plastic bag temporarily around the bottom of the bathroom extractor fan tubing in the loft as it was leaking through the ceiling!

I don't think it's related to wearing/having braces, but probably more to do with age and the natural wearing of teeth.

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 17/12/2020 16:59

Not very hygienic tbh

BeanieB2020 · 17/12/2020 17:00

It's not your teeth that have changed, it's the tape! It's less brittle and more stretchy, harder to tear now than it used to be.

OverByYer · 17/12/2020 17:01

I’ve never been able to bite off tape as my teeth don’t meet at the front. Makes eating sliced tomatoes ina sandwich messy too. #fml

Brissiegirl · 17/12/2020 17:03

No matter what you were wrapping surely you shouldn't have the tape anywhere near ur mouth. Even Covid aside, think of the next person who has to use it. ugh

Ditto!!

Spaghetti is a nightmare too!

Scarby9 · 17/12/2020 17:06

I bite everything - efficient incisors. And open screwtop bottles with my teeth (wash them first).
But recently the top of my front teeth has crumbled so I am stopping!

Well luckily it's just me and my partner here soooooo

Yes!

Mrsmorton · 17/12/2020 17:20

You shouldn't really use your teeth as tools in this way. But as pp said, it's likely to be related to occlusion which can change with time.

Hoppinggreen · 17/12/2020 17:21

I can’t either, used to be able to
I think I grind my teeth a bit and they have worn down. It’s probably as well as it doesn’t sound like a great idea

emmathedilemma · 17/12/2020 17:22

Scotch tape in a dispenser, best investment ever!

Onlymeandthedognow · 17/12/2020 17:38

I can’t either Op!! I fell up our back kitchen step about 4 years ago, and knocked my bottom jaw very slightly sideways and backwards... bit through my lip and -oooh, the amount of blood!!! (I know it’s out of line, as does my dentist - but you can’t tell by looking)
Since then, I can’t bite cotton when sewing, which is most annoying, and I can no longer bite Sellotape!!
As previous Op said... dentists really don’t like you using your teeth as tools!!😁

crimsonlake · 17/12/2020 17:51

Same thing has happened with me in the past year...always tore things open with my teeth, but the past several months I have noticed my bite has changed and my front teeth do not meet.
It is a mystery to me and I have just struggled eating spaghetti for dinner.
