Can no longer bite through cello tape anymore

Just that really. I remember as a teen I used to be able to bite through cello tape when wrapping things, no problem. Then I had braces in my mid teens and I can no longer do this. I've just been wrapping something now and couldn't find the scissors so in a rush just tried to bite some tape off the roll but couldn't seem to do it so asked my partner instead. It feels odd like my teeth are weak or something. Some one else I know mentioned they have the exact same problem as me a while back. I also mentioned it to my dentist and they just shrugged it off. Has anymore else experienced this? Aibu to think braces made my teeth weaker?Hmm

@Mrsmorton

You shouldn't really use your teeth as tools in this way. But as pp said, it's likely to be related to occlusion which can change with time.
Confused. What is a tooth if not a tool?
ChikiTIKI · 17/12/2020 18:04

Paper tape is good. Better for the environment, easily torn, and has nice patterns on it.

Comes delivered in lots of plastic packaging though 🙄

It’s your post braces teeth, I think. Before braces, I could whistle really well, but ever since my braces were removed, can’t whistle a note.

SedentaryCat · 17/12/2020 18:08

I can't any more either. I had two teeth removed and my bite has changed. Find it very annoying but on the plus side I have longer nails as I can't bite them either Smile

I had a nice point bit on my canine tooth, ideal for biting cotton when sewing. One day my dentist zoomed over it with the drill without a word.

It was many years ago and I still forget and try to bite cotton, I was very annoyed with him, canines are meant to be sharp.

Biting Sellotape is really unpleasant so I use a dispenser with it's own little teeth.

MWNA · 17/12/2020 18:48

@Janegrey333

Sello.
Yes. And all one word. (And also - people shouldn't say tele. It's telly.)
TheCovidHalfStone · 17/12/2020 18:54

Are people joking about not biting sellotape? What are they doing with all of their envelopes?

Mrsmorton · 17/12/2020 18:57

@ladybee28 yeah my bad. I missed the part about where teeth evolved to bite sellotape and open bottles. People like you genuinely make me happy to have left the profession, there's one of you in every cohort.

I8toys · 17/12/2020 18:59

After invisalign my bite changed and I can no longer bite sellotape. My bite is fucked up to be honest now.

sleepingbag · 17/12/2020 19:04

You can tear the branded Sellotape...game changer when I found that out!

WanderingMilly · 17/12/2020 19:23

Yes, I have done this most of my life (bite the Sellotape) but for the last few years I can't anymore. My teeth have worn too much and feel 'weak' when I try, it doesn't work now. I'm 61 though, I use scissors these days.

Gosh, something hit a nerve there, eh? Was a genuine question – wasn't aiming to elicit quite such a spiky response.

I wear contact lenses, take a contraceptive pill... I use my body in all kinds of ways it didn't 'evolve' for. And I can't imagine breaking a tooth on a bit of sticky tape. So why teeth are so different from the rest of my body, I'm genuinely interested to hear.

Not from you, though – somehow I've suddenly lost interest in what you have to say on the matter.

YesPleaseMary · 17/12/2020 21:18

Oh to be able to bite off sellotape and thread and eat meat sandwiches properly!!

I have a huge overjet so I can’t ever make my front teeth meet. However I can get my tongue through the gap when my back teeth are together. Am yet to discover a use for this though...

ViciousJackdaw · 17/12/2020 21:45

There are these wonderful devices you can get for this purpose. They are called scissors and if you go to B&M or Home Bargains (and I realise this will be slumming it for some...), you can buy a few pairs very cheaply. It's much more cost effective than the dentist.

feliciabirthgiver · 17/12/2020 21:49

I love that there is a new breed on mumsnet - the sellotape police!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 17/12/2020 21:56

Agree with others. Rather than weak, it's your bite which changed.
I lost a back tooth and my other moved including wisdom tooth and now I keep bloody biting myself.

Also, seriously? Can there be one thread without people going on about hygiene in any situation? As if someone never bloody bit anything like a sellotape off.🙄 We all have much worse things in our mouth often.
And. Immunity building, people. Immunity building😂

Most of the people who ministered to are probably very relieved, also.
