teacher hitting child on head with thin soft cover book

Child is 9, was reading when they should not have been in the classroom, told to take the book (which has a soft cover, like a small version of tintin, say) to the shelf, child obeyed but read while wandering over there, teacher lost her shit, walked up to him, grabbed the book, wacked child over the head twice and then told him to sit down. This is not in the UK, teachers hitting children is against the law though does sometimes happen, but not at this school. I am having difficulty processing it. Otherwise a really great school, nice teacher, rarely shouts let alone hits... there has been a lot of aggression in the playground the last few days too, which is unusual.

@LadyFelsham he said he had a headache straight after but it had gone by the time i picked him up. He was upset when he told me about it, obviously, but is fine now emotionally (as we have talked) and physically. It wasn't hard enough to get concussion, he demonstrated it for me.

She is mostly a good teacher and she is mostly good with dc. This really does seem out of character. I would just like to know why (on earth) it happened and want to know and feel sure it was a one off and won't happen again.

A brain scan !! Don’t be bloody ridiculous

LadyFelsham · 17/12/2020 19:58

After Op's update, I can see it isn't needed but I made my post on the info that the child had a headache hours after the incident.

I misunderstood.

Take him for a brain scan and then call the police I took this comment to be sarcasm.

Maireas · 17/12/2020 20:09

We don't know what country it is. It could be perfectly legal.

But you know why it happened - your child was misbehaving. And how can you be assured of the teacher's future actions under all circumstances?

@Divebar

I think teachers would beg to differ about “ doing no wrong on MN). They came in for a huge amount of flack over the summer ( NB I Am not a teacher). I can’t make a decision because the OP has ramped it up as already stated. I’m also concerned about how the information was obtained and what kinds of questions were used to get the info. Are there any injuries? Is the kid ok? All of these are questions I’d like to know but I’m leaning towards “ next time do as you’re told” - maybe I’d feel different if it was my kid involved.
Agreed. I'm a teacher.

This isn't acceptable but would want to hear from the teacher.

@showgirl63

Not sure it helps but I had the reverse when my DS who was yr9 at the time tapped his teacher on the head whilst they were gathered around a computer with a soft book and said "dumb-dumb"!

No-one believed it was anything other than a kid not reading social rules and appropriate behaviours, but he was still suspended for one day - needed to learn physical contact never acceptably

So that being said, the teacher should be modelling good behaviour and even a playful tap is not acceptable

This happened at my school too. Back in the 80s. My friend tapped a dinner lady on the head and she did lose her shit! She blew it out of proportion, I remember her shrieking "she hit me!" we were all Shockbecause it was a tap. Inappropriate but a tap. my friend got suspended for a week. I felt sorry for her because she was quite friendly with the dl and they used to have a joke so she probably thought it was ok to do that.

Me too
supersonicsuperstar · 17/12/2020 20:36

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for the comments. It has helped a lot.

I think that the account was reliable in all respects other than the intention of the teacher and i will wait and see what tomorrow brings. I think the rest of it is fairly reliable because dc knew I would be annoyed about him going slow and reading and would tell him off about that but he still told me about it.

It isn't acceptable but as I say, it is out of character. I would like to know why she did something which she knew was not acceptable and ... well, I guess I want to know she can cope with my dc without flipping her lid again, if that is what happened.
