I feel like we need to talk about Sloppy Joes.

Growing up on a diet of American TV, I have often heard of this meal. Never really known what it is. I just googled it and am not completely sure what to make of it. It seems to be like spag bol but without the spag and in a bun (roll, cob etc not getting into that here!) instead?

I mean I like minced beef based meals. I like sandwiches. I like burgers. In theory I should like this too and would consider trying it. But my mind is a bit boggled about it. Wouldn't it be really really messy? And the name. I understand the sloppy part if it reflects the fact that the contents are going to slop out of the bun. But why Joe?

Thank goodness I don't have more pressing things to concern myself about at this time...

Not really much to vote on here, I suppose you could say YANBU for it's delicious and YABU for it's disgusting?

We had them last week for the first time and the small person dropped the filling all over the floor! Not going to bother again. Meatball sandwiches though.... Grin

I mean, we all saw that coming right?

I love them, Nigella has a good recipe.
I like chilli dogs too which are along similar lines

Leaannb · 17/12/2020 14:44

As an American I'm expert at this. The reason that the filling falls out of the bun is because it gets soggy. Toast your buns, add the filling and top with a slice of cheddar cheese. Kids love it

Sloppy Joes are fabulous. Also a great way to make a small amount of mince stretch between many many people as you don't need much to make a sandwich. They're no stranger than a pulled pork sandwich. Smile

Leaannb · 17/12/2020 14:46

Hit post too soon...Joe came from the cook who invented the sandwich in Souix City, Iowa

HeronLanyon · 17/12/2020 14:47

Grew up eating them in the us. Ground beef onion and barbeque sauce. Served hot in soft white oval fluffy roll.
Instead of ground beef often shredded braised beef used.
BBQ sauce either bought or homemade.
Excellent.

I ordered a chilli dog the first time I was in America and for some reason I assumed it was the hot dog sausage that was chilli. I was aghast when presented with this hot dog with chilli con carne all over it. Tasty but very messy !

adogisforlife91 · 17/12/2020 14:48

DM is Canadian so I had these growing up. Similar to bolognese yes but doesn't have tomato, and does have ketchup and mustard mixed in so almost a tangy/burger taste.

And yes they are sloppy! But if you put just the right amount in a lovely soft bun the bread soaks up lots of the sauce and it all holds together, mmm delicious.

TheKeatingFive · 17/12/2020 14:48

I am all for them. Yet another miracle of mince.

HeronLanyon · 17/12/2020 14:48

Our whole family would find cheese an abomination !

Iwantmychairback · 17/12/2020 14:50

When I was young, a Sloppy Joe was an oversize sweatshirt..........

naturalyoghurtmuncher · 17/12/2020 14:53

I made it once 🤮 it was awful, too much ketchup. Even my dc would not eat it.

The recipe was from an American family cookbook
BashfulClam · 17/12/2020 14:54

My American friend raves about them but I’ve yet to try I’ve as I don’t like soggy bread.

Pyjamaface · 17/12/2020 14:55

DM is American so we had them loads growing up. Of course they are messy, it's got the word sloppy in the title!

Now I'm a responsible adult and far too refined for such things, we have Texas Horseshoes......made by piling chips on the bun before adding sauce Grin

Im telling you guys...Toast the buns. No soggy bread and not as messy
MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 17/12/2020 14:56

Sounds yum, but I enjoy a Cottage pie sandwich so sounds similar!

IDontMindMarmite · 17/12/2020 14:56

I like soggy bread so this does not put me off.

I had SJ and to my surprise I actually didn't like it at all.

HeronLanyon · 17/12/2020 14:57

I think the ‘slop’ could work well as eg tortilla filling, hard shell filling, baked potato filling, tortilla chip ‘dip’ type affair if you were wanting to try anyway bashful

SlopesOff · 17/12/2020 14:57

@Iwantmychairback

When I was young, a Sloppy Joe was an oversize sweatshirt..........
Or a long baggy jumper.
FedUpAtHomeTroels · 17/12/2020 15:11

Sloppy Joes and loose meat sandwiches were food my kids grew up on.
It's like a very thick bolognase sauce with minced beef in. They are messy they still loved them. Loose meat is seasoned minced beef just heaped in a bun, also messy and tasty.

Cheeseandwin5 · 17/12/2020 15:14

I thought Sloppy Joes was a kind of coffee.
I may have to google it.
To be honest I would find the name is very of putting if it is food.
