I feel like we need to talk about Sloppy Joes.

Growing up on a diet of American TV, I have often heard of this meal. Never really known what it is. I just googled it and am not completely sure what to make of it. It seems to be like spag bol but without the spag and in a bun (roll, cob etc not getting into that here!) instead?

I mean I like minced beef based meals. I like sandwiches. I like burgers. In theory I should like this too and would consider trying it. But my mind is a bit boggled about it. Wouldn't it be really really messy? And the name. I understand the sloppy part if it reflects the fact that the contents are going to slop out of the bun. But why Joe?

Thank goodness I don't have more pressing things to concern myself about at this time...

Not really much to vote on here, I suppose you could say YANBU for it's delicious and YABU for it's disgusting?

Big fans here!! Toasted English muffin and a slice of cheese. Excellent when I frozen bolognese in the free set and cba to cook pasta.

I did a year exchange at a US University back in the eighties when such things were funded. Part of the reciprocal agreement for tuition was working for the University services as we weren't allowed to take any other employment- we were all grateful for the income- and the free meal that came with any cafeteria shift.

As a child of a northern town where ice was a treat and breakfast was toast or cornflakes, it was an overwhelming feast. Maybe 20 different cornflakes- lucky charms and grape nuts et al and unlimited fizzy drink and chocolate milk.

My fave night of the month was sloppy joe night. I always got rostered on that night. There was something about spag bol on a bun that really appealed to me. The American students largely didnt bother. They looked forward to lobster night which none of the handful of Brits really enjoyed.

Oh yes pie on a roll too. Been ages since I've had one of them. Couldn't even tell you the last time I had a Scotch pie at all. Might have to add some to next week's shopping list now. Grin

They look good! But then I eat cottage pie in a roll with butter and brown sauce
And meat and potato pasty

I am English and grew up in the States, sloppy joes remind me of school lunches which were pretty grim. My mum never attempted them (my dad was the Brit who ate his pizza with a knife and fork Hmm) but we had a neighbour who made a nice version in the slow cooker.

Whoever mentioned Philly cheesesteaks tho...yum!

My great uncle went on a musical pilgrimage type holiday to a lot of places in the states-Memphis, Nashville, New Orleans etc. This was about thirty years ago.

When he came back he couldn’t believe Americans made so much fuss about Sloppy Joes.

Some guy in a blue bar had raved about themand insisted they all go get some at a diner because he couldn’t believe Scottish people had never heard of them. “You’ve gotta try these, they’re unbelievable”.

All my uncle could say was “Mince in a softie. MINCE. IN A SOFTIE”.

Yes it’s lovely!

Just to blow your mind further potentially ice cream in a sweet bun is delicious.

Thank you @FedUpAtHomeTroels

I did try searching but wasn't quite managing to spot the difference!

We ate these weekly at American summer camps, they are ok

feelingverylazytoday · 17/12/2020 20:35

I would eat these if I still ate meat. Most things are better in bread.

BooseysMom · 17/12/2020 20:38

How funny as I was reminiscing just the other day with my DF about my DM making these bad boys! My DF hated them and I wasn't keen either tbh. Mince and bread just don't mix! Sloppy is exactly right!
