To think the only way forward now for school staff is to strike in Jan

Sadly, I believe, the only way forward now for school staff in to strike in Jan.

Schools are unsafe, understaffed and not ‘covid secure’. This will get much worse in Jan when people are allowed to meet inside in a 3 household bubble and travel freely around ( in England at least).

Keep telling them not to touch the doors - over and over and over again?

Thank goodness I am out of this craziness -I don't know - lets just keep staff safe by not expecting them to stand in the narrow, packed corridors doing crowd control - perhaps you would like schools to just put a recorded message over speakers, or ask Alexa to keep telling them. Do you know how utterly demoralising it is to say the same thing to every single kid going in and out of a door, every time they go in and out of it not to touch it?

Jellycatspyjamas · 18/12/2020 12:30

Honestly it's like pulling teeth. It was the 'confined' I was shaking my head at. Such drama.

And your “if they’d stop moaning” comment was wholly measured and reasonable 🤷‍♀️

Good to see people continuing to accuse me of something I haven’t done.

Oooohbehave · 18/12/2020 12:40

Good one, did you get it from a cracker?

SantaAssociationRepresentitve · 18/12/2020 12:49

@GetOffYourHighHorse

'I was Looking for a higher rate of death for teachers, than Joe public. But it’s not there, which has to be reassuring..yes?'

Maybe the evil DfE are keeping it secret?

Well hopefully the DfE will up their game given the telling off received yesterday

...just for those who think that the OP speaks for all school staff, I've just signed up to help with the COVID testing of students first week back.

noelgiraffe · 18/12/2020 12:53

Only another 99,999 volunteers needed then.

mrshoho · 18/12/2020 12:55

Glad you've got the spare time to volunteer!

SingleWontMingle · 18/12/2020 14:30

Glad you've got the spare time to volunteer! It's BEFORE the school day starts actually, then I work in my usual role.

noelgiraffe · 18/12/2020 14:36

I suspect you'll find you're not needed, single

Covid testing of students the first week back is going to be a massive effort, not an hour before school.

Looks like you can't do right for doing wrong.
SingleWontMingle · 18/12/2020 14:46

I suspect you'll find you're not needed, single. Covid testing of students the first week back is going to be a massive effort, not an hour before school.

We have received an email asking for volunteers of which both I and my close co-workers have put our names forward. I'm guessing many others will have done too. I said I didn't want to conduct the actual test itself but have been told it will be meeting and greeting, talking through the process at a 2m distance. This is to take place in the morning and in the afternoon, before and after school. I'm guessing students will be invited in groups.

Our school have been really proactive in hitting the ground running when the government throws this stuff at us at the last minute.

I'm guessing they just want the contingency in place. I feel it's more likely that the army will have involvement - just like they did in setting up the test sites for those with COVID free symptoms.

Theyouttheresayin · 18/12/2020 14:56

'Teachers are not balloting for strike action in England. This thread has gone the same way as all the others of this genre. '

The OPs opening was that s/he believed strike action was 'the only way forward' hence all the talk of strike action. I've not accused teachers of trying to strike, I've just addressed the original post.

ancientgran · 18/12/2020 15:01

just for those who think that the OP speaks for all school staff, I've just signed up to help with the COVID testing of students first week back Is someone else going to have to sign up to do your job while you are doing testing?

ancientgran · 18/12/2020 15:02

I don't know any teachers who aren't already working before and after school already so something has to give.

spanieleyes · 18/12/2020 15:03

Better get in early. The government estimates it will take 3 hours for 9 staff to test 100 pupils. Hopefully you will have enough volunteers and enough time!

ancientgran · 18/12/2020 15:08

If a door has a handle that needs to be turned how do you do it with your elbow. I must have missed that lesson when I was at school.

ancientgran · 18/12/2020 15:10

@spanieleyes Better get in early. The government estimates it will take 3 hours for 9 staff to test 100 pupils. Hopefully you will have enough volunteers and enough time! That's going to take a while at my local comp with 1800 pupils the last time I looked.

GrumblyMumblyisnotJumbly · 18/12/2020 15:48

@SingleWontMingle totally appreciate your spirit to help but interesting that you don't want to do the actual testing. I wonder how many staff will actually 'volunteer' to do that?

I was just thinking the same ancientgran, my DC is at a secondary with over 2000 pupils.Using the formula spaniel eyes has given that will take 60hrs to test 2000 pupils - so for the first fortnight 9 staff would be working fulltime on testing! Plus don't forget the volunteer staff like singlewon'tmingle speaking to the students being tested.

Anyone else feel it's another of the Government's big unworkable announcements!?

SingleWontMingle · 18/12/2020 15:54

We are NOT going to do the test. The student performs the swab themselves. I'm under no illusions about how unworkable that is.

Is someone else going to have to sign up to do your job while you are doing testing? I've already answered that.

unmarkedbythat · 18/12/2020 15:59

Is there anywhere with a good and reasonably unbiased (ideally not a pro government "this will be wonderful and easy" sell of it, or a very opposed "this can only be a disaster" condemnation) summary of the proposals for lateral flow testing? I really don't think I understand what's been proposed.

NaughtipussMaximus · 18/12/2020 16:02

@noelgiraffe pull the other one, it’s got bells on it. You’ve literally just said countries that haven’t re-opened schools are doing better than the UK. You can claim you don’t want schools to close until you’re blue in the face but your constant posting to the contrary tells another story.

mrshoho · 18/12/2020 16:04

amazing your school have got their plan in place before the government has even sent the details.
noelgiraffe · 18/12/2020 16:10

@noelgiraffe

So... you think the countries that have yet to re-open are doing better than the UK?

No, I’m saying that other countries are actually acknowledging that schools aren’t safe and taking various measures to mitigate against this.

The U.K. aren’t even following the WHO guidelines while at the same time claiming that schools are safe. Other countries think the U.K. are mad.

I refer you to my previous response to your mad assertion, Naughtipuss and I suggest you brush up on your reading comprehension skills.

Other people don’t seem to have such a problem understanding my posts.
