To think the only way forward now for school staff is to strike in Jan

Sadly, I believe, the only way forward now for school staff in to strike in Jan.

Schools are unsafe, understaffed and not ‘covid secure’. This will get much worse in Jan when people are allowed to meet inside in a 3 household bubble and travel freely around ( in England at least).

Both the EIS and Unison are currently balloting teachers and school staff for strike action @2020out.

houseinthesnow · 17/12/2020 14:32

2020 And nor should there be any proposal. The teachers have pushed way beyond the limits already. I am not sure they are even aware of the ill feeling towards them. I shall never forgive them for not reopening the schools in full - after the summer half term. The unions have made it as difficult as possible to reopen schools with your paid support, at every turn they unions have tried to stop children being educated.

The government are not suggesting that children stop isolating, they are simply introducing mass testing. As they should. If you want to get on top of an outbreak the quickest way to do it is to test as much as possible.

I am absolutely done with this nonsense. My job is high risk in terms of covid, and absolutely nowhere can you hear anyone bleating and complaining. I am utterly sick and tired of it. Everyone else is just cracking on, some of us without the six month break or any break whatsoever. You have just had a solid six weeks off!! As a minimum.

So just stop being so entitled and goady op.
People have had enough, do you really think you are going to find any support from real parents?!

Either leave the profession, allow others to take over with some zeal and enthusiasm for the job - and start doing something low risk like amazon deliveries, or crack on and stop moaning. I have no more time for this.

AnneElliott · 17/12/2020 14:34

No I don't think they should strike. I don't agree with any public sector body going on strike (i'm public sector myself).

Op - you referenced the police in one of your posts. They're not permitted to strike and nor are prison officers. Teachers and firefighters should have the same restriction in my view - along with all other central and local government employees.

And I agree with a pp that mentioned some posts from some people on here who claim to be teachers. Sometimes their posts are so eye rolly - that I wonder if they're the Daily Mail in disguise trying to whip up public opinion against the profession.

LaVitaPuoEsserePiuBella · 17/12/2020 14:35

I haven't RTFT but bloody hell, I hope not 😱😱 School children have had an inordinate amount of disruption already this year.

Really? God that is bad.

In about a term the whole concept of Covid secure will be flipped and we’ll be told to spend and go out. Our perception of risk will completely change. Can’t come soon enough.

2020out · 17/12/2020 14:37

@houseinthesnow

You need to educate yourself on what "mass testing" proposals in school look like before I or other people listen to your ill informed opinion. The instructions published by DfE are about testing close contacts so that they don't have to isolate.

tartiflette · 17/12/2020 14:42

houseinthesnow this is NOT 'mass testing'.
School staff have been calling for mass testing for months. This is not it.

Got bad news for you then, the government are closing schools in Jan.

Lie.

That is an appalling idea. The right to strike is of enormous importance and cannot be withheld just because of who your employer is. Police and prison officers are denied the right for very specific reasons which should be obvious to anyone who thinks about them- but we should not seek to limit workers rights any further.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 17/12/2020 14:48

'Got bad news for you then, the government are closing schools in Jan.'

I thought they were just doing a phased return? Seems sensible to me.

Jellycatspyjamas · 17/12/2020 14:49

@unmarkedbythat I couldn’t agree more, collective action including the ability to withdraw labour is an important right for all workers. While I might not agree with teachers striking over this, I’d strongly defend their right to do so.

See, that's just made your agenda totally obvious.

They have done exactly what Greenwich Council did earlier this week and then there were threads of 'this is totally awful, no regard for parents, unmanageable' etc etc, even though it was about trying to save lives.

The govt do it because they have totally ballsed everything up and you're right up their arse.

RoseMartha · 17/12/2020 14:58

This is not a good idea. What about nurses etc are they supposed to strike because there is covid in their workplace? Of course they are not.

While some kids may have thrived in lockdown no 1. I do not know any who did.

AlternativePerspective · 17/12/2020 14:58

But let’s have a full 5 day family Christmas as big as you like, invite all your extended family and party party party, mix mix mix... e right, we’ll just close the schools and the rest of the surviving business, may as well finish them off!!

But get your priorities right and have the best massive family Christmas 😤

Well, quite apart from the fact that there have been limitations placed on the number of households permitted to mix over Christmas, with a very definitive advisory to not mix at all as preference, I am sick to the back teeth of people blaming the government for Christmas mixing.

You do know that it isn’t mandatory don’t you? you do know that it is possible to take personal responsibility and not mix with other people?

The reason why the figures are going up is in fact the public not being careful, not thinking that rules should apply to them. Look at the pictures of the streets in London on the night before lockdown. The figures were going up and we’re due to go into lockdown, so let’s all mingle now before we have to be responsible because the government says so. It’s not as if we can think for ourselves is it? Oh, wait....

Just checking my bingo card

There are a couple of councils laughing now at these tossers and their constant last-minute change of plans
AlternativePerspective · 17/12/2020 15:02

As for teachers wanting PPE along the same lines as Drs and nurses, are you actually saying that working in a classroom is equivalent to working on an ICU ward with COVID positive patients on ventilators?

The reason why teachers get such a bad reputation on here is because of posters like the OP whose entitled view brings down the view of the whole profession.

So, we’ve had “teachers should be prioritised in the vacccines,” and now we have “teachers should have the same PPE as dr’s and nurses....

Do people not realise just how ridiculous they sound?

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 17/12/2020 15:06

We just wanted masks and hand gel.

Same as supermarkets etc

Plenty of mn posters kicked up a fuss in the summer saying teachers should not wear masks

unmarkedbythat · 17/12/2020 15:06

I can see a case for prioritising teachers for vaccines tbh. Not over CEV or CV people, or over health and social care staff or the elderly, but given the limits on what can be done to protect teachers and the fact that we do need schools open for SO many reasons, it would make some sense to me for teachers to be a high-ish priority group.

MarshaBradyo · 17/12/2020 15:13

Striking really is the nuclear option. I know the government had to scare the shit out of us in March to comply but when phase 1 is done it will all change. Devastation now when we’ll be mixing in cinemas soon is crazy.

Jellycatspyjamas · 17/12/2020 15:15

We just wanted masks and hand gel.

Both of which are available in schools.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 17/12/2020 15:18

When is Gavin going to make his big announcement?

Probably doing it from Tenerife

tinytemper66 · 17/12/2020 15:20

I don't think we should strike.
