What did your dc's glasses cost?

Dc need glasses. They get the lenses free but I have to pay for the frames. How much did you pay for your dc's? Mine are teens so very conscious of having something that won't make them a target for piss-taking as they e had enough trouble with bullies.

£20.

I won't pay for that 30/40 as they just don't look after them!!

SenorFrog · 16/12/2020 21:41

My 15 yo daughter got them free, 2 pairs free from Specsavers, not cost at all and nice too.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 16/12/2020 21:44

Nothing. They are free provided you pick within a price limit. From Specsavers. Although they had stopped the 2nd free pair a few months ago so he's only got 1.

fabricstash · 16/12/2020 21:46

Yeah my son got a free pair from spec savers

RB68 · 16/12/2020 21:47

they should start at free but I notice vision express usually charge a 5 er. Just don't let them pick from the designer range

SimplySusanna · 16/12/2020 21:47

It was actually the opposite for us... ds1 got the frames free but we chose to pay about £20 for the next level up of lenses - removal of blue light tint or something like that, helpful for screens.

Cherryup · 16/12/2020 21:47

Mostly I don't pay anything, sometimes he chooses a pair which are a bit over the free amount, so I pay the top up of about £15.

joopy79 · 16/12/2020 21:48

Normally free

dementedpixie · 16/12/2020 21:49

They should have a free range and then a range of different prices. Think the most I've paid for dd's is about £70 (she's 17)

InTheLongGrass · 16/12/2020 21:50

DS2 - two pairs with standard lenses £0.
DS1 - two pairs with thinned, poylcarb, lenses and upgraded frames as he doesnt fit the kids totally free frames, about £150.

Superstardjs · 16/12/2020 21:51

It's the one thing I spend a lot on for dd. She wears them all the time and has atrocious eyesight. So she picks the frames she likes and I also get the lenses thinned and with anti glare. She does have somewhat of a limit, but it is the thing everyone sees first and at 15 I think it's important she feels confident with that. Her last lot (2 pairs plus new goggles) cost around £400, I think the frames were about half of that, maybe slightly less.

lalaandpo · 16/12/2020 21:52

In Specsavers the frames are free up to a certain amount and then there's an additional cost on top for designer brands. Both of my DS's also have their lenses thinned which is an extra cost.

lavenderlou · 16/12/2020 21:52

Nothing. Two free pairs from Specsavers.

dentydown · 16/12/2020 21:53

My son’s cost £200 but my son has a strong prescription so we have to pay for thinning and slightly fancier lenses. He’s known as “that little boy with the strong prescription” at our opticians!

5zeds · 16/12/2020 21:54

Free. They’re nice. They do have
Contacts once they hit yr10 though. As far as I know they’re all happy with that.

helloxhristmas · 16/12/2020 21:54

I had to pay £30 for the frames but only cos they were so small they needed a specialist range.

Cokearama · 16/12/2020 21:56

Free from specsavers

Iamnotminterested · 16/12/2020 21:58

About £100 normally, but like a poster above, she has a strong prescription so we pay for thinning and for Reactolite lenses which offer UV protection.

grumpypug · 16/12/2020 21:58

£130. Designer ones for my very fussy DS13. I don't mind - he doesn't ask for much and looks after them.

Numbersarefun · 16/12/2020 22:04

Free usually - there is also a choice of frames for £10 at our opticians but mostly she has always chosen the free ones.

Chimeraforce · 16/12/2020 22:10

100 ish due to extreme thinning of one lens. The other eye is virtually perfect just a little +. The bad eye is - 14. Confused

Sh05 · 16/12/2020 22:13

Specsavers are the best for DC's glasses, they give a free spare pair as well as one pair upto £79 I think free. Anything over that price range and you have to pay the difference

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 16/12/2020 22:18

Specsavers no longer give 2 free pairs. Its only the one, funded by the NHS. You can get a 2nd pair half price though.

timeforanewstart · 16/12/2020 22:20

I thought there was always an option of a free frame through nhs bit limited choice and my son didn't like any so cost us £50

Shieldingending · 16/12/2020 22:26

£180, money was for thinner transitions lenses
