What did your dc's glasses cost?

FestiveFannyGallops · 16/12/2020 21:37

Dc need glasses. They get the lenses free but I have to pay for the frames. How much did you pay for your dc's? Mine are teens so very conscious of having something that won't make them a target for piss-taking as they e had enough trouble with bullies.

£50 or £60 because he has to have lighter glass as eyes are +7 and likes a little logo on side of arm.

lavenderlou · 17/12/2020 01:09

@Shieldingending

£180, money was for thinner transitions lenses
Oh no! Since when?
lavenderlou · 17/12/2020 01:11

Oops, sorry, quoted the wrong post!

I meant since when did they stop doing the two pairs for free for kids?

DioneTheDiabolist · 17/12/2020 01:16

Nothing.

CoffeeCreamandSugar · 17/12/2020 01:33

One free pair and the second was about £20

positivelynegative · 17/12/2020 01:36

£90 but they are on her face constantly. She never asks for anything else

After lockdown 1.0 i think. Apparently the company can't afford it anymore.
SimplySusanna · 18/12/2020 03:57

100 ish due to extreme thinning of one lens. The other eye is virtually perfect just a little +. The bad eye is - 14

Wow that's such a big difference! I'm a - 16 and the lenses are like bottle tops unless you have them thinned.

I'm jealous of people with low prescriptions - my sister is a - 3 and has about 8 pairs of glasses...she picks them up for under a tenner at Glasses Direct and the like, which you can't do for high prescriptions. My last pair was over £300 which was the cheapest I could get it.

Crazycakelady17 · 18/12/2020 04:46

My DDs have varied from free when she was 2-7 but as she got older she got fussier wanted the designer range and we also have them thinned now as she is a very strong prescription last pair was £165 she’s 10

ShowOfHands · 18/12/2020 04:54

DD has the free ones. She's 13 and entirely happy with her tortoiseshell frames.

skankingpiglet · 18/12/2020 05:30

DD1's were free. DD2's were free but I paid £20 for the anti-glare coating as she has to wear them constantly (DD1 just needs them for close up work). Both came from Specsavers and they had plenty of frames to choose from. They are currently offering a second pair at half price (was in there last week), but we didn't bother for DD1 as it isn't critical she has them and she could cope whilst they are repaired/replaced. DD2 needed a follow up check a few months after the first to assess the prescription, and we correctly assumed she would be issued with another set of glasses so didn't bother with a spare pair. The newer pair have only a slightly tweaked prescription so the originals are perfectly fine as a backup.

Catsup · 18/12/2020 05:47

Maybe not what you're looking for - but I've had - 7 contacts from Specsavers since 14 (I'm now 40), and if bullying is a problem it might be an alternative route you may wish to look in to.

Catsup · 18/12/2020 05:57

I'll also add I'd been prescribed glasses from 5yrs old, so it came as a bit of a shocker to my mum on secondary parents evening that a teacher suggested I got my eyes tested? 😂... Contacts literally changed my world! (coupled with a head brace 'I was supposed to wear' at the same time - it would have equalled teenage social suicide! 😳).

Buntingandbuttons · 18/12/2020 06:01

I agree with using spec savers. We had eyes tested at a local independent place and although the lenses were free wanted to charge £90 for frames!! Shock Took the prescription to Specsavers and was all free plus half price second pair Smile

CupoTeap · 18/12/2020 06:02

Nothing and always had the 2 pairs from specsavers- they need to get tested gutted if they have stopped the free pair

Phillipa12 · 18/12/2020 06:08

£95. I paid extra for anti glare on the lenses and then I paid the difference for the glasses that he really liked, no point in buying any if he won't wear them! Dc1 is very careful with his glasses as he's aware of the cost, he's also a hearing aid wearer so he struggles to find glasses that don't squash/overcrowd his ears.

user1487194234 · 18/12/2020 06:13

£325
I got her the ones she wanted and paid for thinned down lenses
I reckoned that as she wears them everyday it was worth it

RoseDog · 18/12/2020 06:33

Did 17 free at specsavers because she always picks he same free frames.

Ds 15 "free" as part of his contact lens contract at specsavers

Both dc have wore glasses since they were nursery age and neither have been bullied about it!

marvelousmadmadammim · 18/12/2020 06:39

We have to have lenses thinned or they would never fit into frames and be mr McGowan thick.
We also go to reactor lights as I couldn't live without it so why should she.
She wears them all the time so we suck it up.
