What's Christmas looking like in your house?

We were supposed to be off to Greece to spend Christmas with Grandparents Sad

Instead, it will be just me, ex DP and 2 dc. Dc will wake us up at silly o'clock to open presents. Breakfast will be smoked salmon and scrambled eggs and mimosas, chocolate waffles for the kids.

Then we'll either go for a walk if it's nice, or watch a cheesy movie. Dinner will be spatchcocked Turkey, stuffed tomatoes and peppers, roast potatoes, and salad.

After dinner I'll be downing margaritas and watching Netflix until bedtime.

Just the four of us for the day.

Probably have nachos /pizza on Christmas Eve and watch a movie.

Presents first thing on the day, then piles of coffee, cartoons, pancakes and bacon.

Gonna do an organic chicken if I can find one with all the sides, or maybe even a turkey, they seem very reasonable this year! Cheesecake from the deli for pud.

Will fit in some outdoor time too

MrsOmelette · 17/12/2020 05:41

Just DH and the kids, like every year. We have stockings at 7am at earliest, breakfast of chocolate porridge and then a long walk on the beach. Burn our Yule Log on a campfire and have a wee nip of whisky, kids hot chocolate made on the fire.
Walk back home for making a roast chicken lunch, with trimmings and Christmas Pudding or Chocolate Orange Trifle.
Once everything is washed up, get settled with a glass of wine and open presents which will take ages as we do it one at a time with frequent breaks to play with stuff etc. Watch Call The Midwife and try not to cry through it - my DH and I were both in floods of tears watching the special a couple of years ago.

JanetSnakeholeMacklin · 17/12/2020 05:56

Me, DH and the DC (who are 16 and 6). Presents in the morning, with coffee and Danishes, followed by a hike with the dog for a couple of hours. Then we'll all come home, stick the m&s Christmas dinner in the oven, have dinner, play with kids toys/chat to family on facetime/drink prosecco, read, watch Xmas films and eat chocolate.

mutantelfoftraal · 17/12/2020 05:59

We have to self isolate until Boxing Day so nothing different here, I have a click and collect order which I can't collect now and the supermarket were extremely unhelpful when I phoned customer service 😡

MerchantOfVenom · 17/12/2020 06:02

It’s summer here and we don’t have COVID, so probably a little different from most.

Wake up at ridiculous o’clock to open Santa presents and stockings, then breakfast and coffee while we Skype grandparents and uncles overseas.

Get dressed, and then present opening and getting food under way.

We have a crowd coming over, arriving at midday. Bubbles and a very late lunch on the lawn. Secret Santa, lots of laughs and general over-indulging. Definitely in countdown mode now. 🎄☀️ 💛

GreekOddess · 17/12/2020 07:21

Christmas will be similar to usual here.

This is the first year that our youngest has not believed in Father Christmas (he was doubting last year) so the crazy over excited years are behind us but the kids are still looking forward to it. There are less presents under the tree as we are not exchanging with extended family and my eldest doesn't really want much. This year will be more about the food, relaxing and being together.

I'm hoping that we can have a lie in. Usually the kids would wake on Christmas morning at 6.30 I'm hoping they will stay in bed until about 8.30 this year as we are all exhausted and don't have so many presents to get through. The day will start with the boys coming into our room with their stockings. I will then have a shower whilst dh makes breakfast. We have scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, champagne and pannetone. Then it's present time and the rest of the day is spent chilling, watching TV and playing board games/computer games with the boys. Christmas dinner will be served at about 4.30 pm when it's getting dark so we can have candles. We are having traditional Turkey with the full works so lots of prep will be done the day before. Chocolate orange cheesecake for pudding as the boys don't like Christmas pudding.

pepsicolagirl · 17/12/2020 07:23

@mutantelfoftraal have you tried nhsvolunteerresponders? They should be able to help

HazeyJaneII · 17/12/2020 07:33

Ours will hopefully be illness free (not necessarily Covid...ds has a habit of being ill at Christmas)
The day will be like the day usually is..
Up at stupid o clock, kids pile into our bed, open stockings, few presents from tree, breakfast, dressed, more presents, coffee, more presents, lunch, films, Fortnite, try to persuade everyone to go for a walk....fail, more tv/board games/puzzle/, crisps, booze, snooze.
It will be lovely, but the people we normally share it with will be missing, and that will be hard. I'm going to try really hard not to cry.

Looneytune253 · 17/12/2020 07:36

Pretty much normal tbh. We usually have a quiet one anyway but dh mum will spend the day here (but she's in our bubble anyway) my parents will pop over (and they'll stay for lunch). Will see my sis at some point over the Xmas days but not necessarily Xmas day. That's not 'normal' but more to do with what's going on in her life than covid

BetsyBigNose · 17/12/2020 07:43

We're really looking forward to a quiet Christmas this year - we usually spend the week before travelling all over England, visiting various family members and delivering gifts, but this year it'll just be me, DH, DD11 and DD13 at home.

The girls will have us up around 8am to open stockings, then we'll get dressed and have breakfast. We'd usually go to the Christmas morning service at Church, but we'll be opening the rest of the presents instead this year! Lunch will be eaten once it's ready and we've got a Zoom call with DH's various family members for a game of the Junior version of Cards Against Humanity penciled in. Several other video calls across the day to wish everyone a "Happy Christmas!", then the new Pixar film on Disney Plus, followed by Call the Midwife. Should be lovely!

Sostenueto · 17/12/2020 07:47

There will only be my 2 dds one SIL one Dgd and myself which is usual for Xmas day. I broke my knee in November so I won't be doing the cooking. ( Hurray!) It will be a quiet Xmas as only day off for one DD and the other and her dh will be back working 12 hour days after boxing day same as other DD. My Dgd back from ist semester at uni will be revising for exams at begining of January and deciding when to go back to uni. But it will be a sombre Xmas as we all spare a thought for those families unlike us that have empty seats at their tables due to Covid and other conditions caused by Covid and not getting treated in time. There are thousands of families mourning this Xmas and thousands after Xmas all for the sake of celebrating Xmas. So I hope, like us when u sit down for your Xmas dinner, you pause for a moment to say a quiet prayer for those who will never celebrate Xmas again with their loved ones.

ramblingsonthego · 17/12/2020 07:48

We were meant to have my mum and my eldest daughter coming. A positive test at nursery has put paid to that, so we will be isolating at home. I want to just forget Christmas and go to sleep and wake up in a year when hopefully all this will be over.

We won't do a Xmas dinner now, not worth it for the 3 of us. So a normal ish day I suppose. We have presents for my youngest but as I have been made redundant we have decided no other presents.

Eekay · 17/12/2020 07:49

DD and small GC living with us temporarily so back to being woken super early with GC and his stocking I suspect after a few more sedate Christmases.
Will have taken him on a tour of Christmas lights Christmas Eve to try to tire him out although it won't be dark till 9.00p.m so I'll be the tired one!
Actually very excited about this.
DH and I will watch an old Christmas movie before filling the stockings and dragging the tree presents up from the cellar.
Other AC and another small GC mid-morning for brunch and presents around the tree. Pastries, bagels, juice, coffee, fruit salad and smoked salmon.
Chaos will ensue for some time.
Late afternoon it will be be DH, one DS, DD one GC.
I will do a roast with all the trimmings despite a prediction of 32 degree sunshine here.
There would be a riot if we didn't have "proper English Christmas dinner". Every other house will be eating shellfish or having a BBQ!
Dinner whenever I serve it whilst trying to defend the table against Ddogs trying their luck.
Then collapse with gin for DH and a cuppa for me.

Pascha · 17/12/2020 07:50

Christmas at home for once. No driving for me so I get to have champagne for breakfast. I imagine it will go

Stockings
Presents (some)
Breakfast
Wander if not raining
Chat to grandparents
Downtime
More presents
Dinner around 4 or 5pm
Telly/gaming
Bedtime

QuantumJump · 17/12/2020 07:51

We would normally have had 15 of us (from 5 families) around the table. This year it will just be me, DH, three DC and possibly DH's parents - but they're now feeling nervous and may not come. Whatever happens, DH and I will cook the full Christmas dinner with all the trimmings and we'll have presents around the tree (youngest DC still believes in Santa) and Christmas telly and a jigsaw and it will be similar to a normal Christmas but with fewer people.

And two weeks off work for both me and DH, as we have more annual leave leftover than usual Xmas Smile

vampirethriller · 17/12/2020 07:52

Dinner at my brother's then home.

MrsMop1964 · 17/12/2020 08:13

We don't celebrate xmas so a normal day but I usually use it as an excuse to buy far more chocolate and 'treats' than we usually do and will probably enjoy them while lazing in front of the tv. Talking to work colleagues, the consensus seems to be they're having a quiet xmas this year.

Thedarknightsaredrawingin · 17/12/2020 08:49

Dsis, Bil and their 3 DC’s are coming for Christmas lunch.

EggnogAndAMincepie · 17/12/2020 09:18

I'm working so mine will just be the case of popping round to see my Mum and Sister quickly exchanging presents and stuffing down my xmas dinner as quick as I can before my break is over. I'm hoping I can maybe change some calls around though so I can get a slightly longer break. Off Boxing Day though so I'll be going back round again and staying over so I can have a few drinks. Just need to remember to give my ex husband a key so he can come in and feed our Cat. Can't leave extra food out for him because he'll scarf the lot in one sitting then spend the rest of the day and night sulking because he's hungry again 😹

PinkFlamingo888 · 17/12/2020 09:30

Driving 3 hours down to my parents Christmas morning after finishing my night shift (I’ll be sleeping in the car!). Walk on the beach with the dog, Christmas dinner, presents, probably a board game or 2 and some Christmas telly. I have a huge family so really low-key this year but should be nice and relaxed (although I’ll be extremely tired!)

elp30 · 17/12/2020 09:53

It will be like any other day.

I live in the US and this Christmas (2020) was the year my family was going to spend with my in-laws in Greater Manchester. This was going to be the last time my two younger children (they're young adults) would be coming along before they leave our home for good and we become empty nesters. Plus, my MIL was diagnosed with cancer in 2019 (she's keeping it at bay, for now) so it was important to go to England. We had made a point to ensure we could all spend as much time with her, my FIL and my husband's family since it's been five years since we last saw everyone.

Covid came and ruined all our plans. We own a photography business as our main source of income. We generally have 200 bookings a year to sustain our lives. This year due to owning a non-essential business, we have only had 25 bookings since March.

This year it's a Thai takeaway for Christmas lunch in the US and that's about it. Maybe we will do a Zoom call with family abroad and have a Buck's Fizz toast and hope for a better new year.

Brainwave89 · 17/12/2020 10:15

Only us as a family this year. We open presents first thing. We then move on to Christmas breakfast which is smoked salmon and scrambled egg. Then Christmas lunch about 2.00 which is Turkey with all available trimmings. Followed by Christmas pudding/log and then cheese and port in the afternoon. Our log fire will be burning and we will watch a couple of programmes on the television. Differences will be we would normally see other people after lunch, and we would usually have a trip to the pub at lunchtime.

MintyCedric · 17/12/2020 10:27

Having a mum and daughter day Christmas Eve which I'm looking forward to.

Christmas Day, me and DD (16) presents and breakfast then round to my parents to cook dinner. Dad is currently bedridden and on end of life care so not sure how we'll be able to include him or if he'll be sufficiently compos mentis to know what's going on.

There will no doubt be lots of tears from mum and friction between her and DD which I'll have to manage and then more drama when I try to extricate myself sometime in the evening.

Back home to cry into a pint of Baileys, then probably more of the same Boxing Day, followed by DD getting back from her dads with tales of his usual generic twatishness, if she actually manages to last the day with his new family.

Really wish I could fuck off somewhere all-inclusive on my own with a pile of books and forget the whole bloody thing.

IMNOTSHOUTING · 17/12/2020 10:35

DC will wake us at around 7 for stockings (having not been able to get to sleep until about 12 probably). We'll have those smoked salmon canapes bought from M&S for brunch, pop the turkey in the oven, do tree presents. Then I'll be in the kitchen doing roast potatoes and veg while DC and DH play with new Christmas toys. Eat dinner. Watch Christmas film and bed. Usually there'd be a house full of in laws but I think a quieter one will be nice too!

Yorkshireswithallroasts · 17/12/2020 10:45

Just me, my husband and our 5 year old this year (although that’s by choice!). Wake about 7, open presents and then toast with a side of chocolate orange for breakfast. We need very little persuasion to have a roast here so I’ll get cracking on that, rib of beef, all the usual trimmings and then Christmas pudding for a bit later once we’re less full! Once our son is in bed my husband and I will crash in front of the tv with Quality Streets and watch the two Christmas Gavin and Staceys.
