To ask about things you believed as a child that aren’t so...?

I was convinced there was a law that meant adults couldn’t argue or fall out.

@Letsplough

I thought it was illegal to have the inside lights on in the car while you drove.

I tell my kids this now as I used to believe it too. Wink

Well this is something I have learnt today. I still believed it

@ClaraMumsnet

So, it's not illegal to drive with your internal car lights on then? Blush
Wellllll....

Sort of.....

In the UK, it is an offence to show a red light to the front of a vehicle (including a reflector) and a white light to the rear unless reversing.

So if having a (white) internal light on is visible to other road users behind you, then I suppose you may be committing an offence.

I told my children you couldn't in the dark because it's bloody distracting and frustrating at night having internal lights on.

I thought you got a stiff neck by looking in same direction as somebody else for a long time. Made car journeys with family quite stressful... had to keep changing direction I was looking in.

@RUOKHon

My mum told me if I chewed my hair I would end up with a massive hair ball in my stomach.
I'm sure there was a news story in the 60/70s of a woman that died with a huge hair ball in her stomach 😬

I thought the bank kept our money in separate boxes and each time you withdrew any they got it from your own box.

My late grandfather was always telling me that if you swallowed chewing gum it would wrap around your heart and you would die. He also said when he came back from sea he would bring a mermaid back and keep it in his bath for a few days before releasing her at the beach. I was always really annoyed that he had always released her before we had time to visit, always just missing it by a few hours.

He was my step-grandfather and had left his family for my nana back in the day. He hadn't had contact with his own children since they were young. It is hard to judge him without knowing the full story.

On his death bed, one of his sons showed up very unexpectedly. It was sad because we were all sharing stories about him and his son didnt really have anything to share. Then I mentioned the chewing gum and mermaid and he kind of sighed with a smile and said, "yes he used to tell me both of those things too, and I always believed him"

When my sister was 4 she was told of the sad news that our granny had died and she said "Who shot her?"

I was mystified by Special K - "For grown up people who'd rather not grow anymore." I thought it stunted your growth.

I also thought that the news was made up and films real - I saw our city's Christmas lights being shown and was very confused. Ditto when a "goody" was shot in a western.

I didn't understand that tv programmes were pre-recorded and thought it was strange no one on tv ever had to go to the loo.

My younger DB always thought he would somehow be able to 'overtake' me and become the eldest.

@mummy2oneandtwo

I thought thought the paper in a fax machine was rolled up and went down the wires to the other fax machine, blew my mind when I found out that wasn't the case!
Is that you Maureeen Lipman, aka Beattie of the BT adverts?

I thought how clever football players were, we went and watched them play on Saturday afternoon then watched Match of the Day, (or whatever it was then) in the evening and they were able top repeat exactly the same moves five hours later!
