I found a partial row of eyelashes in my sausage! 🤢
I thought it was a dog hair initially and pulled to reveal the horror..

Not that I was unaware sausage was once a living, breathing pig or anything, but a sausage doesn’t really bear much resemblance to the animal so you don’t tend to think about it.
The sight of the lashes has just repulsed me to the core.

Even though that’s probably so stupid because it was once a pig, so obviously things like that will be blended into it but still.

After I’ve bought all the pigs in blankets and meat filled stuffing and gammon and bacon and sprouts in preparation for Christmas 😖

Got to try and find some alternatives for myself now...

I'm veggie, so of course I would welcome you to the club, but...

Just to play devil's advocate... I can see why this would put you off sausages, but what about steak or chicken legs or salmon? (I mean, I think they're all objectionable, but apparently you didn't, so just wondering.)

SchrodingersImmigrant · 15/12/2020 20:41

That's ok.@Weedsnseeds1 I know I've seen pork cheeks (maybe not much in UK come to think of it) on menus. Beef ones are obviously much more popular.
And yes, it's an staffing issue I agree, even outside of covid cases from what I heard so it must be just back breaking now especially from numbers you said👀

Thanks for the info. It's interesting! Not good, but interesting.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 15/12/2020 20:47

I do see your point but the whole idea of sausage etc is disguising what it actually was isn’t it ? Otherwise eyelids etc would be the norm. It’s all really sad I think

I wouldn't say 100%. Probably you are right when it comes to massess. Plus some bits are just faff to do by itself so they get grinded in. It really depends on the sausage though. Some are more livery, some have more meat, some don't have certain parts etc.

susandelgado · 15/12/2020 20:47

I don't know if this has been asked, but were they good quality butcher's sausages or generic supermarket ones?

Hotchocolatewithcream · 15/12/2020 20:51

Complain about what. "A piece of an animal in my sausage reminded me it's an actual animal"?
Oh I agree, I have no intention of complaining.

It’s just one of those things, I think everyone knows the less appetising parts, like eyelids, go into a sausage it’s just the actual seeing it, a PP had it right when they mentioned cognitive dissonance and that’s exactly what it is.

I know what the sausage is made of but you just don’t think about it as it bears no resemblance to a pig.

I just want to add that if one doesn't feel comfortable eating animals, they are absolutely free to become veggies. I have nothing against veggies. It's a personal choice and should be respected😁

Mrsclaus5 · 15/12/2020 20:58

I had similar age 10. Was watching the lambs playing in the field next to my grandparents house, then we went to the supermarket and I saw a leg of lamb in the freezer.

Something just snapped in my head; the barbarity of what we do to animals became so clear. Haven't touched it since.
If you don't lose the repulsion you feel now you'll make a difference to the lives of animals op

FourPlatinumRings · 15/12/2020 20:58

I don't eat meat sausages because, as you've discovered, all sorts of grim gets ground up in them. We have the Richmond Meat Free. I will still eat chicken breast and fish though.

PrincessNutNutRoast · 15/12/2020 21:08

Don't think of veggie and vegan food as trying to replicate meat. It's an entirely different palette of flavour and texture and, I honestly believe, way way more delicious.

That’s exactly what happened to Linda and Paul on their Scottish retreat....I think this Picture of them both is lovely, it used to be on her food packets on the back.

Totally reasonable to decide you don’t want to eat meat. I remember mentioning once at work that we’d been to pick our Turkey at a friends farm the week before they were slaughtered and how horrified people were at the idea. I find it odd how squeamish people are about the fact all their meat comes from animals that were alive a week or two back. Kids and I still have a chicken once a month plus some pork fillet, steak and mince. OH is veggie and we all eat veggie breakfast/lunch and round half of dinners are veggie. We’ve also stopped buying cows milk but still get cheese, eggs and butter. All the eggs and meat are free range and I’m debating getting free range cheese and butter but wavering a bit due to the expense. We really should just go for it and eat a bit less. Anyway we’ve been slowly eating less and less meat and there are tons of great alternatives. We use loads of black beans, jackfruit and butternut squash. There are great veggie and vegan meat substitutes available too. We like heck sausages and the kids adore without the oink bacon (fairly sure it must be really bad for you and it smells like frazzled when cooking but they think it’s amazing)

jblue2018 · 15/12/2020 21:19

So grim! Me and oh went veggie in 2019 and out baby daughter has been weaned pescatarian. We were both HUGE meat eaters particularly him and thought we couldn’t live without bacon burgers and sausages! We went veggie as an experiment for eco reasons (after watching some documentary or other!!) and found it surprisingly easy. Couldn’t go back now.
To be honest I can’t believe I used to eat actual animals 😔

whatkatydid2013 · 15/12/2020 21:20

*frazzles not frazzled - those bacon flavoured crisps

gingerbreadfox · 15/12/2020 21:29

@JumpLeadsForTwo

Richmond meat free sausages are really good (and we've tried a few different ones) if you are after an alternative
Second this! They are amazing
gingerbreadfox · 15/12/2020 21:33

I always remember seeing in the news when somebody found a nipple on their bacon. But at the end of the day they were living, breathing animals... so these things are bound to happen.

Veeg34 · 15/12/2020 21:59

Shroomdogs and richmonds are the best veggie sausages in my opinion!!
