I found a partial row of eyelashes in my sausage! 🤢
I thought it was a dog hair initially and pulled to reveal the horror..

Not that I was unaware sausage was once a living, breathing pig or anything, but a sausage doesn’t really bear much resemblance to the animal so you don’t tend to think about it.
The sight of the lashes has just repulsed me to the core.

Even though that’s probably so stupid because it was once a pig, so obviously things like that will be blended into it but still.

After I’ve bought all the pigs in blankets and meat filled stuffing and gammon and bacon and sprouts in preparation for Christmas 😖

Got to try and find some alternatives for myself now...

@Hotchocolatewithcream

If they were still in a row I'd imagine they're false lashes It was a row of maybe 6 or 7 light coloured lashes attached to what looked very much like skin. I imagine the rest of the eye got grounded and that bit for whatever reason didn’t...
Eugh, I have sausages in the fridge....not sure I'll be able to eat them now
QueenofLouisiana · 15/12/2020 19:43

I’ve been veggie for 30 years. I don’t miss meat at all and I’m planning to try veganuary next year.

I’m being very lazy this year and bough lots of yummy veggie Christmas food from Aldi. Looking forward to it all!

CallistoSol · 15/12/2020 19:43

I don't eat any pork purely because I can't eat a creature that is at least as intelligent as my dogs. I don't eat octopus anymore for the same reason.

That is appalling have you complained ?

But surely even 'stupid' animals deserve a life free from slavery and sexual exploitation? Strong wordsi know, but then so are the action acted out on them.

Weedsnseeds1 · 15/12/2020 19:51

Every carcass and its corresponding offal is checked by an FSA vet before it gets released, so no tumours, abscesses etc.
Head meat (not brain, eyes, tongue) does go in sausages, but if you got a partial row of lashes, that's a butchery error, not part of the recipe.
Food factories have been badly affected by COVID ( it's not only teachers that are affected), so you might have less skilled butchers on the line

Jenifirtree · 15/12/2020 19:54

Pigs are very smart. Pigs were the first animal i stopped eating long before i became vegetarian.

Get on some good vegetarian / vegan sites for recipe and meal planning ideas. i only gave up meat one year for lent. Didnt miss it so didnt start eating it again. Ive not missed meat once since.

ALbigbump · 15/12/2020 19:56

Did veganuary this year and haven’t looked back, loads of plant based roast alternatives available. Tried Iceland’s mushroom Wellington on the weekend, amazing value and v tasty. Gagging from reading you OP

Totally and utterly agree with you. I try and make ethical choices in all things. Beef and lamb are occasional treats, always organic. Fish is minimum MSC and I never eat tuna etc. I'm no angel but I try to make the right choices Smile

Whats with the bitchiness, @Weedsnseeds1 Hmm
Weedsnseeds1 · 15/12/2020 20:02

Jenifirtree hundreds of people in the food and logistics industry have been affected, but nobody actually seems to care. They're mainly minimum wage Eastern Europeans, so dispensable. They just aren't in the same league as teachers, NHS or carers on here.
Or were you questioning that carcasses were inspected? I can assure you they are.

BonnieDundee · 15/12/2020 20:02

Yes. Go on. Veggie is so easy these days

june2007 · 15/12/2020 20:05

YANBU to want to be a vegetarian. But i wouldn,t base my decision on your finding in the sausage.

StillMedusa · 15/12/2020 20:10

I returned to being Veggie this year (was for years when younger but then ate meat with my kids)
Not missing it , and now find the smell of meat vile. And while I am low dairy (not entirey vegan)my diet is better because I am actively looking to do different recipes!

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 15/12/2020 20:12

Shroomdogs are the best veggie sausages I’ve tried, didn’t love Richmond.

But yep OP they’re real live animals and I think if more people overcame their cognitive dissonance surrounding meat and animals the world would be a much better place!

TopTabby · 15/12/2020 20:13

Oh dear that sounds very grim. I'm trying very hard to be vegetarian & I'm on week 4 now. Stories like this make me want to carry on. I agree with a PP about the intelligence of pigs & I couldn't ignore the conditions many animals are kept in anymore.

nancybotwinbloom · 15/12/2020 20:13

Op I'm with you I'm going full vegetarian in January.

For now I'm cutting out meat and trying the substitutes.

I feel emotionally better for it.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 15/12/2020 20:17

Well yeah. Sausage is whatever didn't get used elsewhere stuffed into an intestine (though there are alternatives today).
It would be a shame to waste parts, much like the face.
I am big fan of if you kill it, use it all.

Complain about what. "A piece of an animal in my sausage reminded me it's an actual animal"?

I thinks cheecks are taken off along other things because they are used separately.
SlopesOff · 15/12/2020 20:22

I can't eat anything with chopped and covered up mushrooms in (pastry covered) since the day I ordered a sandwich containing raw mushrooms and it had bits of a very large spider in it. It was some years ago and I have never forgotten it.

I think the reason I miss meat is that I rarely feel as full as I used to before I gave it up but that is probably me being lazy about cooking properly.

VicMackey · 15/12/2020 20:22

I do see your point but the whole idea of sausage etc is disguising what it actually was isn’t it ? Otherwise eyelids etc would be the norm. It’s all really sad I think
Weedsnseeds1 · 15/12/2020 20:23

Cattle yes, cheeks come off on the line, particularly as they are quite a trendy thing at the moment. Also brains and spinal cord are category 1 material. Pigs, head is usually removed as a single unit, then butchered seperately.

PinkBuffalo · 15/12/2020 20:30

Yanbu op!
I been veggie for long time, my sister has got us a quorn roast For xmas dinner
I also love the Richmond veggie sausages they are the best (probably for me cos I do not like Strong flavours etc and veggie stuff can sometimes have lots Of herbs etc)

Weedsnseeds1 · 15/12/2020 20:32

That was for SchrodinersImmigrant apologies for not addressing you in the post.
I have no issue with vegetarianism I don't eat a huge amount of meat myself, but my jod involves visiting food factories, from the nice, to the not so nice parts of the industry.
I have spent this year in factories with 0 to 300 positive cases ( not people isolating, actual cases). They keep going because people expect to eat. People want to stay at home and get on line deliveries if they can, I understand that, but the stuff isn't made by fairies and delivered by elves.
If your staff are sick or dead, you get agency staff in this industry.
Agency staff may well work in multiple factories. If they are infectious everyone gets it. But a day or two, for a deep clean is the maximum that will happen for ygd most part. Quite often, it isn't even that.

Weedsnseeds1 · 15/12/2020 20:34

And apologies OP, for having a moan on your thread.
