To think smoking should now be banned in public spaces?

I saw on the news footage of people Christmas shopping in London and people sitting outside in cafes etc. Given the current situation should public smoking be banned? Not only because it stinks and it's anti social but more people are now meeting outside due to covid. I don't believe there is any evidence that breathing out smoke spreads the virus anymore than normal breathing. It's just selfish, non smokers no longer can be told 'if you don't like it go inside'

OP posts:
MrsVogon · 16/12/2020 13:42

I agree with you, OP. I've often felt it needs to be the next step. Smoking is vile and it is unfair to inflict their second hand smoke onto other people. Smoke at home or designated areas instead.

Clockstop · 16/12/2020 13:43

Agree with op, not really because of the virus but just because smoking stinks and it's so anti social to be walking down a street and get smoke blown at you. If I walked down the street spraying everyone with cat wee then I'd be arrested. But cat wee probably smells nicer!

canigooutyet · 16/12/2020 13:49

It's not just about how much revenue it makes the government. Smoking keeps people in employment.

None smokers are being barred entry to places to get their full enjoyment is a temporary thing. We know this.

Smoking outside isn't temporary. Once those laws were introduced a lot of establishments closed down as a result.

I've spent years smoking/not smoking. I have lost count the number of pathetic people who have seen me smoke and decided to sit/stand near me and start pa huffing and puffing, or even making comments about the dirty thing. Fuck off away from me then, I never asked you to come near me.

Like it or not. Smoking is an addiction.

Banning this doesn't make things go away, such a ridiculous suggestion. Drugs are illegal yet people still find them and use them. During Prohibition there was a black market for booze.

Black market causes a lot more damage.

Kaliorphic · 16/12/2020 13:51

But cat wee probably smells nicer!

Course it does love 🙄

Mommabear20 · 16/12/2020 13:56

In places like Walt Disney world, I LOVE that it's prohibited except in designated places, because that is private property and people choose to go there knowing the rules. But in general society, no! Stop cutting peoples rights! I'm a non smoker and hate the smell and everything about them but everyone is entitled to their own vices.

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/12/2020 13:56

Yeah cat pee or cat spray is a lovely smell.

canigooutyet · 16/12/2020 14:09

I'd rather visit the mens toilets than smell cat piss/spray.

CrotchBurn · 16/12/2020 15:04

The most ridiculous thing is when you go to an airport and you're not allowed to smoke outside on the pavement you have to shuffle 20m along and smoke there on the pavement, in the little box painted on the ground😂

They are, the designated space is outside...
Kaliorphic · 16/12/2020 19:31

They are, the designated space is outside...

Yep. But now other people want and feel they have more right to that space. The special people.

VinylDetective · 16/12/2020 20:20

The special people

The people who think the world revolves round them.

CherryPavlova · 16/12/2020 20:25

Treating smoking-related illnesses costs the National Health Service in excess of £1.5 thousand million a year.

People complained about seatbelts when they were introduced. People would moan about a ban on tobacco sales, but it would reduce the numbers and prevent many avoidable deaths. Nobody came to any harm by giving up smoking. There are only benefits.

Whammyyammy · 16/12/2020 20:31

I don't like the smell of smoke. I also don't like the smell of certain perfumes, certain food, the smell of alcohol..... let's ban absolutely everything unless its in your own home.

Kaliorphic · 16/12/2020 20:37

And thus smoking pays for itself and much more in tax on cigarettes 🤷‍♀️

dingledongmerrilymysky · 16/12/2020 21:38

Is there a petition for this ?

VinylDetective · 16/12/2020 22:19

If there was it would be pointless when the Treasury benefits so handsomely from the tax on tobacco.
squeekums · 17/12/2020 02:58

@dysoncansuckit

Haven't read every single comment, however smoking in public is mostly banned in Australia. Has been for a long time. It's not a big deal.
Its not policed much at all though, especially in SA People still smoke at bus stops, outside shops, pubs and cafes, outside hospitals and government buildings, even the footy or royal show, smoking is easy. If you have a vape, you can 'smoke' even more places like inside the footy or royal show

On PAPER its 'banned'
In practice, not so much

dingledongmerrilymysky · 17/12/2020 11:24

I'll start a petition then, which is the best site to use?

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/12/2020 11:26

Good luck with that dingle, you will need it.

Hahahaha. Do you actually believe online petitions do anything? Nobody would even give it the time of day
dingledongmerrilymysky · 17/12/2020 11:28

Would banning outdoor and public smoking be best or just stop the sale of cigarettes. I guess maybe the smoking ban due to the black market sales ?

dingledongmerrilymysky · 17/12/2020 11:31

@vodkaredbullgirl Hmm why thanks. Can I count on your signature ? You know there are a lot of non smokers out there, people with kids who don't want smoke blown on them, people with respiratory illnesses, the list goes on. I think it would do alright. I'm maybe not the most articulate person but I say do something rather than just complain.

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/12/2020 11:32

No I'm a smoker, sorry.

canigooutyet · 17/12/2020 11:47

To get it debated in parliament, you need the government petition site.

Do you want a total ban or just banned from outside?

canigooutyet · 17/12/2020 11:52

What about alcohol. The same arguments and more can be made to ban this afterall.
