To think smoking should now be banned in public spaces?

I saw on the news footage of people Christmas shopping in London and people sitting outside in cafes etc. Given the current situation should public smoking be banned? Not only because it stinks and it's anti social but more people are now meeting outside due to covid. I don't believe there is any evidence that breathing out smoke spreads the virus anymore than normal breathing. It's just selfish, non smokers no longer can be told 'if you don't like it go inside'

YANBU, but I’d go one further and say smoking should be flat out illegal.

It serves no purpose except to make money for those selling and taxing it, otherwise it would already be illegal.

Smokers are selfishly affecting everyone else around them and can’t be trusted to look after their own health either by doing it in the first place, so it needs to be taken out of their hands.

wimhoffbreather · 15/12/2020 09:16

To all the ‘I don’t want to breath your gross smoker smoke’ (I don’t smoke btw) - what about air pollution? Cars? Industrial fumes? Even things like micro plastics in our water...all things casually poisoning us. Where is your rage for that? Oh I forgot, you wouldn’t be able to judge people for those things

Bleughbleughbleugh12 · 15/12/2020 09:17

@wimhoffbreather 100% agree

Flvq · 15/12/2020 09:17

@MrsKingfisher

Are people so addicted that they can't go shopping or have a coffee without having to smoke? If you want to smell gross and harm your health great but why should others have to be party to it without their consent. Do all non smokers have to not sit outside now to accommodate those too selfish to do it in their own home?
It’s a legal addiction. No. They can’t. In many cases. They’re addicted.
Flvq · 15/12/2020 09:18

What about all the other things people so that affect their own health?

I’m fat. Should I have my eating policed by the state?

What about alcohol?

Poppyolive90 · 15/12/2020 09:18

I’d love it to be banned in public places. It’s really unpleasant suddenly getting a face full of smoke whether that’s in a pub garden or in the morning on the way to work when someone decides to light up in the middle of a big crowd at the traffic lights Xmas Envy (not envy)

Prufrocks · 15/12/2020 09:18

Ugh.

2020 has been shit enough for telling people what they can and can’t do.

I’m not a smoker but I find this attitude distasteful in normal times and just fucking oppressive right now.

Poppyolive90 · 15/12/2020 09:19

FLVQ you being fat doesn’t negatively impact my health though, or make my clothes smell of your fat.

Sally872 · 15/12/2020 09:19

I think smoking should be banned for those turning 16 now. They are never allowed to start. Eventually it would be phased out.

I wouldn't ban those who are already addicted from smoking outside. Especially at this time.

ShalomToYouJackie · 15/12/2020 09:20

@Flvq you drinking alcohol and eating unhealthy food doesn't affect the health of people around you when consuming those things.

Flvq · 15/12/2020 09:21

I don’t drink. But keep on assuming. 😂😂😂

MrsKingfisher · 15/12/2020 09:21

There is absolutely no logical argument for why any non smoker should be subjected to a smokers second hand smoke. So all of us non smokers have to bow down because boo hoo it's so oppressive to allow people to breathe freely outside. I never said ban it I said ban it in public spaces. Go home and smoke yourself to death if that's what you want to do, don't inflict your selfish choices on others.

Flvq · 15/12/2020 09:22

Also. I never gave the health related reason I’m fat.

Nice assumptions there though.

The logical argument is because it’s legal outside at present.

Are you lobbying your mp?

pollysproggle · 15/12/2020 09:22

Oh give it a rest

vodkaredbullgirl · 15/12/2020 09:23

Hmm what next to ban?

OffredOfjune · 15/12/2020 09:24

@vodkaredbullgirl

Oh lovely not had an anti smoking thread for a while.
Yep!

Must tell my DM, who unfortunately picked up the habit 30 years ago after the stress and trauma of a physically abusive marriage, that she's a selfish piece of shit, basically.

Banning smoking outside? Laughable.

FatGirlShrinking · 15/12/2020 09:24

There is some irony here which I find amusing.

Smokers in your view OP are selfish, but only in the sense that they are now sitting in the space that you want to be in and spoiling your enjoyment.

It wasn't selfish when they were sitting in the rain and cold because it's the only place they were allowed to sit while you were inside in the warm and dry.

WorraLiberty · 15/12/2020 09:25

Do you mean the same London where 2 million people are living with an illegal level of air pollution?

No, I couldn't get fussed about a bit of cigarette smoke on the wind tbh.

SlippersForFlippers · 15/12/2020 09:25

I agree, I'd love to be able to sit outside pins/cafes in the summer months but generally choose not to as my meal is ruined by people on the next tables smoking.

Oh stop it! Such hyperbole! You sound ridiculous, a tad unhinged!

This ^^
SlippersForFlippers · 15/12/2020 09:26

That should say pubs/cafes obviously

Calm down luv
ShalomToYouJackie · 15/12/2020 09:26

@Flvq you said "I'm fat, should my eating be policed? What about alcohol?".

I'm sure you can see why I assumed that you meant you drank alcohol and whether that should be policed, apologies for the assumption. In any case, someone else's food consumption and alcohol intake doesn't affect the health of those around them so it's
it's different to second hand smoke.
