Chairs on tables

JaggersCat · 14/12/2020 03:22

My 7 year old DD got hit in the eye by a chair at school. All the children have to put the chairs up on the tables at the end of the day and it was knocked. Headteacher said it is to make it easier to clean the floor.
AIBU to be furious that the floor seems to me more important than DD’s eye?

That's fairly standard at schools, I think?

Sorry your daughter got hurt (is she ok?) but I suspect if there was an epidemic of kits being injured with chairs it wouldn't happen.

Sycamoretrees · 14/12/2020 03:41

Don't be so ridiculous, it was an accident. You can't control for all risks.

JaggersCat · 14/12/2020 03:50

It was bleeding and now she got bruising too. Broke my heart to see her hurt. She little for her age.

Heart breaking seems a touch extreme. Chairs on tables has been the norm since I was at school 30 years ago!

GlummyMcGlummerson · 14/12/2020 03:55

Accidents happen. No one thinks cleaning is more important than her eye Hmm what outcome do you want exactly? To stop putting chairs on tables?

NerrSnerr · 14/12/2020 03:59

I remember doing this at the end of the day in the 80s! Accidents happen.

BritWifeinUSA · 14/12/2020 04:43

I’m almost 47 and we put the chairs on the table. You’d be complaining if the cleaners were touching every chair to move them out of the way to clean the floors.

Life involves risks. Walking down stairs has risks. Crossing the road has risks. Cooking has risks. Accidents happen, despite the best intentions. More children probably are injured in accidents on the way to or from school than from chairs on tables.

SillyMoomin · 14/12/2020 04:48

Ummmm

Sorry about your daughters eye op

But equally... YABU. Highly.

Give yourself a head wobble, give your daughter a hug and a biscuit and get on with life

Yeahnahmum · 14/12/2020 05:06

Most U ever.... op
Seriously...

Crustmasiscoming · 14/12/2020 05:21

I'm very sorry that your child got hurt, sounds awful.

But it's ridiculous to say that they think cleaning is more important than your daughter, and I think deep down you know that.

Frannibananni · 14/12/2020 06:03

Accidents happen. Should the cleaners spend hours each day putting chairs up and down because some kids are clumsy?
The answer is no.
Accidents happen, the world doesn’t revolve around wrapping your child in cotton wool.

grapewine · 14/12/2020 06:09

You're upset, naturally, but this is such dramatics. YABU for that.

Chairs on tables at the end of the day is not a new thing. The floor needs cleaning. It was an accident.

fallfallfall · 14/12/2020 06:15

No stitches necessary just a little life lesson.

Gooseysgirl · 14/12/2020 06:17

YABU. I'm sorry you're little girl got hurt but it was an accident. A reminder from the class staff for the kids to be more careful should be more than sufficient here.

rawlikesushi · 14/12/2020 06:23

I'm a teacher and this really made me smile. I'm sorry your dd got hurt but there really is nothing too minor for a parental complaint nowadays is there. You'd rather the cleaner moved hundreds of chairs and then put them back again afterwards? I fear you have a difficult ten years of education ahead of you if this minor thing has left you heartbroken. Teach your dd some resilience, you'll both benefit in the long run.

Oysterbabe · 14/12/2020 06:24

Don't be so ridiculous.

user1493413286 · 14/12/2020 06:31

It doesn’t make any sense to say cleaning is more important than her eye; it was a one off accident rather than something that happens every day. I hope her eye is getting better though; it’s horrible to see your children hurt.

ScrumptiousBears · 14/12/2020 06:43

This has to be a wind up.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 14/12/2020 06:45

Sorry op but yabu - chairs being put on tables at the end of the school day has been going on for years and accidents happen. Your daughter will be fine.

MessAllOver · 14/12/2020 06:50

It is not an inevitable consequence of putting the chairs on the tables that your DD will get hit in the eye.

Ask the teacher to warn the class to be more careful in future.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/12/2020 07:11

I suppose the simple solution is to dispense with chairs altogether, it avoids any future accidents, it's easier for the cleaners and the chairs can be sold and the money spent on books.

The downside is that kiddies tend to develop stockier legs from standing all day. Wink

Ginfordinner · 14/12/2020 07:16

I'm 62, and we put chairs on tables to make it easier for the cleaners. Thorough cleaning is more important than ever these days.

I hope your DD is OK.

Is 'heartbroken' the new 'fuming?

Bowerbird5 · 14/12/2020 10:55

I’m quite surprised that they are still doing this. Our school stopped this practise about ten years ago. The Headteacher didn’t mean that the floor cleaning is more important than your child just explains why they do it. It might come up in a meeting and a decision made. It was just an accident though and children have accidents ( so do staff) and an unfortunate thing to happen.
