Chairs on tables

JaggersCat · 14/12/2020 03:22

My 7 year old DD got hit in the eye by a chair at school. All the children have to put the chairs up on the tables at the end of the day and it was knocked. Headteacher said it is to make it easier to clean the floor.
AIBU to be furious that the floor seems to me more important than DD’s eye?

Don't you want them to clean the floors? Grin

Itsonlymakebelieve · 14/12/2020 14:45

My son when 6 managed to trip over his own feet and fall headfirst onto the push bar of the main school door which was kept locked for safety reasons, everyone had to buzz the intercom to safeguard the children. Should the door has been kept open just in case random children tripped over? He received a nasty cut above his eye, I was sad but not heartbroken. He got a visit to A & E and a special trip to McDonalds for being brave, so he was not too distraught either.

Sounds like kids messing about caused an accident rather than your 7 year old having to put her chair on the table.

MrDarcysMa · 14/12/2020 16:12

You're ridiculous, op.

DianaT1969 · 14/12/2020 16:17

This is definitely a wind up.

Bluntness100 · 14/12/2020 16:22

Gosh op she could have fallen into the corner of a table, anything really and hurt herself, it was an accident.

The chairs are up so the cleaners can mop the floors, it’s standard practice.

Etinox · 14/12/2020 16:25

I don’t think YABU
It’s one of those things that we do because we always have done rather than assess the risks sensibly. A risk assessment of 30 year olds lifting chairs up simultaneously would definitely ‘fail’
I hope your dd is ok Flowers

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/12/2020 16:31

We had to put chairs on the tables when I was at school in the 60s. It has always been this way. Your child had an unfortunate accident that's all. Cleaning is more important than ever at the moment.

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 14/12/2020 16:32

Heartbroken really? How do people like this get through life?

Alonelonelyloner · 14/12/2020 17:09

PFB?

CrochetToTheMoon · 14/12/2020 17:10

I’m 34 and we put chairs on tables at the end of the day too, accidents happen unfortunately.

SirGawain · 14/12/2020 18:00

@MrBloomsLeftVeg

Heart breaking seems a touch extreme. Chairs on tables has been the norm since I was at school 30 years ago!
And me sixty years ago.
TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/12/2020 20:18

@sirgawin

...and I understand cave children used to stack theirs rocks too (although they were a bugger for painting on the walls)

CakeRequired · 14/12/2020 20:31

Can totally understand op, you are totally correct. I hope that you've only bought soft cuddly toys for your daughter incase she hurts herself on anything harder than cotton wool. Don't get anything that needs batteries either incase she licks them. And don't forget to buy more bubble wrap to wrap her in before she has to cross the street. Hmm

Think you need to calm down just a tad and not over react to her getting slightly hurt. How exactly are you going to react to her falling off a bike if this is how you react to a chair hitting her by accident? Going to set fire to the bike and demand she never cycles again? Will you do swimming lessons with her or not bother incase the chlorine hurts her eyes?

Brighterthansunflowers · 14/12/2020 20:53

YABU it was an accident. Kids have been putting their chairs on the table at schools all over the country for decades!

Would you like them to stop the children running around at playtime in case they fall over? Or not allow her in cars in case there’s an accident?

1Morewineplease · 14/12/2020 20:57

You're overreacting.
Schools have been doing this for decades.
How will you cope when your child learns hockey?

BefuddledPerson · 14/12/2020 20:57

Worth raising kindly with the school and asking if it is logged as they should consider accident prevention, our school.stopped doing this as it resulted.in accidents.

BefuddledPerson · 14/12/2020 20:58

Schools did loads of things for decades before they stopped. That is a stupid argument for anything.

dudsville · 14/12/2020 21:02

You holding it in mind as if it was a conscious choice; either chairs or your daughter's wellbeing. If that were true it would be understandably awful, but that isn't the case. Hope your daughter feels better soon.
