That's it, really.

It's £740!!

We do have the money, but I don't like to feel wasteful or extravagant, especially when it comes to spending money on myself.

I bake all my own bread plus my dc love baking, as do I, so it will be used at least 3x a week, every week.

It needs to be reliable, powerful and have a minimum 6.5 litre capacity bowl, which this model fits but.....

It's a mixer!!! Their basic model is around £300, but the bowl isn't big enough.

I can get a non branded one from Amazon for around £200+, which has the large bowl capacity I need (and some even come with extra attachments such as a meat grinder), but.... it's not good value if it breaks after 2 years.

The Kenwood has a 10 year guarantee on the motor, which is what has failed on my cheaper model (after about 3 years), so on that basis it would cost me £74/year if it lasts the 10 years, which would make it cheaper in the long run than a cheap one which breaks after a few years.

Aarrgghh!! I can't decide so I'd appreciate other people's views on this. Thanks 😊 🙏

I have 2 Kenwood chefs, both working perfectly. One was my wedding present 25 years ago, the other one was my DM wedding present, so over 50 years old.

Walkintal · 14/12/2020 00:57

A new one will be a wedding present for my DC

Hurtandupset2 · 14/12/2020 01:03

My mum has one that is over 50 years old, and whilst not used so often over the last 5 years, for the 24 years there were children living there it was used 3-4 x a week, so it's had a good 40+ years of regular use and is still going strong.

I think my mum has a basic model, but it does the trick.
One worry I have is that the more tech the model has the more things that can go wrong, and the Patissier XL has a lot more tech.

Plus I do wonder if they're still built to last.

I have a kenwood chef that was my 21st present and is still going strong 15 years later.
I use it 2-3 times a week baking.
Mainly croissant dough, biscuits, meringues and cakes. (I’m totally pants at making bread)

Walkintal · 14/12/2020 01:42

you may be better with this. Less to go wrong, but the bigger bowl size. Spend the extra on attachments/better/other kitchen supplies.

HiveHoofHole · 14/12/2020 01:45

Sorry. I am very confused. Are you talking about a stud dog that won at Crufts, or about a kitchen appliance?

Hurtandupset2 · 14/12/2020 13:09

Does anyone own this model? If so, could you give me your honest opinion of it please?

Some deals for mixers on the Nisbets website, e.g.:

www.nisbets.co.uk/kenwood-chef-xl-mixer-kvl4100w/ct992

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/12/2020 13:54

It warms????

I get that it weighs, I wish mine did, but warms!

OMG! That'd make chocoate work a doddle. And it proves dough in the bowl!!!!

I wish my Titanium were broken... I'd get new one Grin

JohnMiddleNameRedactedSwanson · 14/12/2020 13:56

You can get a Chef XL for more like £400 with a 6.7 litre bowl. You would need to use the bowl-warming function a lot for it to be worth an extra £350.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 14/12/2020 13:56

Can you still get a Kenwood Chef Major? That was always their semi-pro line up with a much bigger bowl. I have a Titanium Chef that is coming up to 15yrs old and as good as the day we got it, but I can’t comment on the specific model you mentioned. The Majors are absolutely bulletproof though.

Hurtandupset2 · 14/12/2020 21:01

Thanks everyone. I'm not sure about the major, I've not seen it online anywhere so assume it's no longer produced.

I bit the bullet and have ordered the Titanium Patissier XL.
I probably would've been happy with the Titanium XL, but it's been discontinued and the few models left cost the same as this new one, so I might as well have the newer model. 😁 Now I've made a decision, I'm quite excited 😁

Everyone I've spoken to has nothing but good things to say about the Kenwood brand so I'm hoping it lasts many, many years and makes the purchase worth my while.

Please let us know how you get on - I’ve been pondering the same thing! Did you look at the Teddy varimixer at all?

Hurtandupset2 · 16/12/2020 19:40

@Spottyegg, no, I've not heard of that one.

I'm meant to be collecting it tomorrow so I'll let you know (click and collect). Thought it might be quicker than home delivery 😁

I'll definitely review it once I've tried it, and again once I've had it a while as I couldn't find any reviews for myself, so would be nice to help others decide.

Hurtandupset2 · 18/12/2020 23:52

Well, collection didn't happen until today as there were delays within their delivery system, but I've unpacked him and I am now reading through the instructions, etc, so he will get his first tryout tomorrow 😁

He's rather smart looking though 😗

The Titanium is the semi-pro line now, in replacement for the Major.

I have a normal-sized Kenwood Chef Titanium and really like it. The 1500 W motor is really good, and a vast improvement on various second-hand food mixers I had used previously.

Hurtandupset2 · 24/12/2020 10:39

I've now used it several times, and so far, I'm impressed.
It's really quiet compared to my last mixer, so you can still hear yourself think, lol.
The weighing function is very useful and makes things that much quicker. It seems to be pretty accurate too (as long as the cable isn't trapped underneath it 🙄).
The proving function and preset dough kneading program are both really good, as you can see from my latest loaf.

The touch control panel is easy to follow, simple to understand and responsive to touch.

The bowl light is fab and really allows you to see inside more clearly.
It can link to recipes on the web, but I've not tried this feature yet.

All in all I'm really.pleased with my purchase. All the attachments feel really solid and good quality.
The bowl moves a bit when kneading heavy dough, but I'm assuming that's due to the base being a weighing machine, which means it isn't as solid as a normal base would be (as it has give in it for weighing).

I think it's pretty stylish to look at too.

Meant to add, that I'm planning on using the chocolate melting function today, so I will let you know how that goes.

Yes, I bought this model in December. I loved it, mixes much better and quicker than my old Kenwood Chef BUT each time I used it, it would stop half way through mixing and tell me to switch off for 30 seconds and switch it back on. It seemed ok after I did that but at £740, it’s not acceptable! I think you may be right that the extra features introduce more to go wrong. I contacted Kenwood customer service about the error but they didn’t seem to know what causes this error. Crazy because it also gave an error code. They eventually said it could be a problem with the sensor. Anyway, it is currently on it’s way back. I only bought this one because the previous model (without all the features) has been discontinued. I am going to buy another one (if I ever get refunded!) because I really love the mixer (even though I don’t use the extra features) and I’m hoping i was just unlucky with getting a faulty one but if it happens again, I will have to find an alternative but I need the 7L bowl so not a lot of choice around.

mcinnes01 · 03/03/2021 11:49

@Devon64 Just wondered if you have got your replacement and what your verdict is? I'm just waiting to pull the trigger deciding between the Chef Elite XL or the Titanium Chef Patissier XL but have also read a few reviews similar to yours.

Devon64 · 03/03/2021 13:24

Hi, yes I got a replacement directly from the Kenwood site because Amazon had sold out. You won’t believe it, the second time using it, I got exactly the same fault. So disappointing. I sent it back for a refund. I managed to track down the previous titanium XL model (without the electronic functions etc) and have bought that one. Obviously I won’t get the same error because this one doesn’t have the digital bit that operates everything. I’ve only used it twice so far but it’s been fine. I’m apprehensive though because they’re all made in China now so I’m pretty sure it won’t last as long as they did when they were made in the UK 😞
