why inappropriate? i had one, at ten my dad got me a hornby train set.

tissy · 22/10/2007 17:44

yes dd got a Brio set at about 2 and loved it

captainmummy · 22/10/2007 17:45

i think it's a great idea (your mum is obv. stuck in gender issues) and if you go for Brio or Duplo you can add to it at each birthday and christmas

NAB3 · 22/10/2007 17:45

Different generation. Why not? Get the girl a trian set!

TheMadScaryHouse · 22/10/2007 17:46

My mum just told me that she is really in to her dolls and teddys at the moment.

I am not normally so worried about stuff, but suffering from PND at the moment.

I am not into gender steriotyping, my 2.6 year old has a baby, buggy, kitchen and we have bought him a cash register for Christmas!!!!

Captainsmummy - can not afford Biro or Duplo at the moment, but I have got the Tesco Compatable one (we actually bought it in their Jan Sale earlier in the year)

we havwe the tesco one. bought it originall when dd1+2 were 1 and 3. its still going well for dd3 (dd1 is now 7)

captainmummy · 22/10/2007 17:50

tescos is fine - we had loads of bits from either. We also had the duplo one (bought secondhand) which is great for little hands. I'm sure she will love it all anyway.

peskipixie · 22/10/2007 17:52

lovely idea for a present as long as its pink

lucyellensmum · 22/10/2007 17:55

my dd 2.3 loves trains, we have just got the bargain of the century from the local charity shop - full thomas train set, with about 15 die cast models for a pound (what a bargain) she kisses them and gives them cuddles, takes some to bed with her. Choo choos are her absolute most favouritist things in the whole wide world

She also loves her kitchen and fairy princess castle, no interest in dolls though.

JARM · 22/10/2007 17:57

We got DD1 her train set (or rather her aunty and uncle did) for her chirstmas last year, she was 2.5yrs.

Loves it and DD2 (2 on thursday) plays with it a lot too.

Also the tesco one!

NAB3 · 22/10/2007 18:00

JARM Did you change your mind about the sheets?

lomondgore · 22/10/2007 18:03

my dd has one and loves it (we got it in ikea) she was just under 3 when we got it and she still plays with it all the time.

Just go for it, I don't believe in gender stereotyping either. I am thinking of buying my nephew a buggy and doll as he loves playing with them but his dad refuses to buy him one and it makes me so

lizziemun · 22/10/2007 18:08

dd1 loves her trainset (happyland), also her remote control car which she got when she was 2.5yrs.

She will be 4 at the end January and wants the bosch workmate for christmas .

Our neighbour always laugh when she is playing with her car outside, dressed up as a fairy/princess .

flamingtoaster · 22/10/2007 18:12

She will love it - when I was a child I was given my cousin's Hornby train set and I was the envy of every girl I knew. I loved it!

twentypence · 22/10/2007 18:16

Ds has got a huge set which he has had from the same age and we keep adding to. Our next door neighbour got her daughter one as she saw how much ds loved his.

I'm going to see Thomas and Friends live on stage next week (we are in NZ) and I bet there will be just as many girls there as boys.

clumsymum · 22/10/2007 18:38

My Sis bought ds the big Tesco set when he was 3, and over the years we added bits from Brio, ELC, and I think M&S, they all fitted.

We now have a HUGE plastic crate full, with 2 battery driven engines as well as the original push along one, about 6 bridges and MILES of track (kept buying odd boxes of extra straioghts and curves whenever they were reduced at Tesco).

DS is now 8, and I'm just thinking of selling it. You can bet tho' that if I get it out to photograph it for ebay (and count all the pieces) he'll start playing with it again. If he doesn't, DH will.

Oh, and when I was little I had hornby trains and Scalectric (I'm still a petrol-head). Your Mum is just a bit old-fashioned. Buy it for your neice, and make sure you do your share of crawling round the floor with her making chuff-chuff and whooooo-whoooo noises.

derahCula · 22/10/2007 22:35

My DD (2 yo) is well into all things pink and girly but loves her Thomas train set too. And why not indeed?

bookwormmum · 22/10/2007 22:42

I bought my dd a train set for her 2nd birthday to get away from toy stereotyping (plus it looked fun). Loads of people seemed shocked though.

twentypence · 23/10/2007 00:03

All these shocked people - have they never been on a train? Can girls not learn to problem solve, create patterns, use their imaginations?

grannyslippers · 23/10/2007 00:16

It's a great present. I wish I'd had one when I was a kid (only had sister so it was dolly city in our house). I love playing with the DS's "Brio". Just get a cheap version, but look out for cheap zoo/animal playsets in TK maxx that might be more girl-friendly.

And now I'm an engineer and get to play with the real thing it sure ain't just for the boys

minouminou · 23/10/2007 01:00

get her the train set!
tell your mum you're working on closing the pay gap
that'll give her something to think about over turkey and mince pies

becklespookle · 23/10/2007 01:23

My little niece adores her train set, as does my friend's little girl. She'll probably love to have something different to play with and as it is compatible with the Brio stuff, very easy to add to!
