When you do a circular trip

  • like a run or a walk or a hack/bike ride or even a car journey do you like to go:

Counter clockwise = YANBU
Clockwise = YABU

I feel like it’s highly unnatural to travel in a clockwise direction.

I have never given it any thought, just do what I fancy on the day

BikeRunSki · 13/12/2020 17:11

Both

PickAChew · 13/12/2020 17:11

I go either way or else I get bored. I've done rather a lot of the same few circular walks, this year.

united4ever · 13/12/2020 17:12

Depends on the wind direction....want the tail wind on the second half when I am tired.

AlrightTreacle · 13/12/2020 17:12

Both, never really thought about it tbh.

Nutrigrainygoodness · 13/12/2020 17:13

When I run around our park I like to go anti clockwise otherwise I would run up a big hill and not down it 😂.

When I do my c25k route I run clockwise, because I like to run past the lake first. 🤷‍♀️

BobbinThreadbare123 · 13/12/2020 17:13

Anticlockwise and clockwise. Or you get fed up.

swapsicles · 13/12/2020 17:13

Don't think I take notice tbh, it all depends whether I stop on the way and where that is in relation to the time Id get there and hills etc.
During the first lockdown I'd do many walks so would just do the same walk but opposite direction to stop me getting bored.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 13/12/2020 17:13

My regular walking route is clockwise. I just had to work that out.
It's about 50:50 on those who do it clockwise and anticlockwise

profpoopsnagle · 13/12/2020 17:17

I only walk, and think that hill prevalence is more of a decider for me. I try to get the worst bits done early!

But I do agree that you need to vary any route, and doing a walk in the other direction means you see completely different things.

cologne4711 · 13/12/2020 17:17

My husband and I used to argue about which way round the M25 to go from the M1 to the M20. It made more sense to me to turn left at the M25 and go round via Essex and Dartford but he always went via Heathrow because he said that was the way his dad would have gone.

Still seems very strange to me, even now, although now we live near the M3, so we would go via Heathrow to get to the M1 :)

Don't care, could be either. My normal run from the door I do anti-clockwise, but only because that means the easy flat bit is at the end of the run.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 13/12/2020 17:19

I go clockwise on a regular walk but that's more to do with wanting to go down the steeper hill and up the more gradual one.

cologne4711 · 13/12/2020 17:20

However, I have a 4 mile running loop which I run in either direction (it is hillier in one direction but what goes up must come down).

tinselfest · 13/12/2020 17:38

Never thought about it before, but now you come to mention it, anti-clockwise. Although depending on how long the walk, there can be a figure-of-eight manoeuvre at the far end.

Aprilx · 13/12/2020 17:45

I have never thought about it before. However now I have just considered some of my regular routes and I always go anti-clockwise.

iglpgl · 13/12/2020 17:51

If I'm cycling, it depends on the wind direction!

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 13/12/2020 17:53

I usually go in the direction that has less uphill running!

rubydoobydoo · 13/12/2020 17:56

It depends! We always do our longer walk route in a clockwise direction but our shorter one the other way - no idea why, haven't actually thought about it before! Habit I suppose! Grin

CakeRequired · 13/12/2020 18:10

Whatever direction has less uphill parts.

Surprised anyone notices what direction they are going in.

Ylfa · 14/12/2020 08:33

I notice because I’m a bit like a horse, when I do the same route in a different direction it becomes a whole new experience (and I am startled by things I’ve seen before but from a different perspective) 😀 I think that’s why I always preferred out-and-back for very long runs. Bonus of novelty plus running towards home makes it feel half the distance.

BikeRunSki · 14/12/2020 16:17

If it’s a bike/running route I do often, i change direction deliberately to get different hills.

PattyPan · 14/12/2020 16:19

I voted yabu because I’ve honestly never noticed and I think it’s a bit weird that you think one way would be unnatural!

Shodan · 14/12/2020 16:23

Longer running routes- all anti-clockwise.

Short ones- clockwise.

I have no idea why I go anti-clockwise on the longer ones, but I do know that the short one has a hill which I'd rather run down than up Grin
