When you do a circular trip

  • like a run or a walk or a hack/bike ride or even a car journey do you like to go:

Counter clockwise = YANBU
Clockwise = YABU

I feel like it’s highly unnatural to travel in a clockwise direction.

clockwise dog walk every day. creatures of habit here.

ApocalypseNowt · 14/12/2020 16:34

At parties most people circulate anti-clockwise.

I've been waiting years to use this bit of trivia Grin

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/12/2020 16:39

I do a circular dog walk from my home most days but I like to vary it.

earlydoors42 · 14/12/2020 17:14

What's a hack? It wouldn't occur to me to consider whether it was clockwise or not

lazylinguist · 14/12/2020 17:30

Confused It has never occurred to me to think of routes even being clockwise or anti-clockwise, never mind thinking about whether one is preferable to the other! I have a very non-mappy brain and have trouble imagining routes from an aerial perspective iyswim, so it doesn't particularly occur to me to think of a round trip as an actual circle.

Ylfa · 14/12/2020 17:31

A hack is just a shorter way of saying ‘riding out on a horse’. Could have said ‘horse ride’ I suppose.

Interesting about parties, is it like water down the drain though - I mean does it depend upon which hemisphere you’re partying in? 😀 imagine being at a party ☹️ ☹️ ☹️

Either way, I get bored if I always go the same way round.

Sirzy · 14/12/2020 17:48

@TheBitchOfTheVicar

I usually go in the direction that has less uphill running!

I used to vary my movements and daily routes so much that when i briefly dated someone who’d worked in counterterrorism he said I behaved like a terrorist trying to evade detection 😀

Oh I don't go for hacks then so can't comment! :-D

I just go for walks whichever way I fancy going

yeOldeTrout · 15/12/2020 09:31

Mostly depends on wind direction (walk, run or cycle). Walk I like to start with tailwind; cycling I want to start with headwind.

Brighterthansunflowers · 15/12/2020 09:36

On ice skating rinks the flow is usually anti clockwise (both for public skate and figure skaters training). Almost all skaters spin and jump anti-clockwise (though clockwise is permitted) and most beginners find turning anti clockwise easier.

But I think generally for walks, cycles etc people are more likely to be influenced by other factors such as hills.

Ohdeariedear · 15/12/2020 09:39

It’s always about my comfort - so generally speaking I’ll go into the wind for the first half, or try and get the biggest/longest hill out the way early. I never give a thought to clockwise/anto-clockwise!

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 15/12/2020 09:39

Always up hill first. I get in a bad mood if I know I've got a big hill coming at the end of a walk 😅

BarbaraofSeville · 15/12/2020 10:05

I also mix it up for variety and also, if I've gone one way and had trouble finding a particular path, I'll do the walk the other way, so see where the path I couldn't find comes out, IYSWIM, especially when I've been doing repeated local area lockdown walks.

On the matter of clockwise vs anticlockwise, I think most supermarkets are anticlockwise, because there's been research that's indicated that people spend more if the layout leads shoppers round this way. Possibly something to do with most people right handed.
