To expect people not to go out when ill even if it’s not covid.

Hi all, I know we can’t shut ourselves away every time we get a sniffle etc.

A good friend of mine told me this week that her teenage Dd had covid like symptoms - fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue etc. Got her a test and it came back negative which is great so on paper she doesn’t have to isolate anymore obviously.

Her daughter isn’t better yet (this was only a few days ago she got ill).

Yet she’s been mixing yesterday and today with others since negative result and gone shopping in a city today. Yet she didn’t go to school yesterday after negative results as she was still feeling poorly.

Aibu to think this is still a bit selfish? Putting covid aside, even before covid aibu to think this is selfish?

She could pass on whatever she’s got to someone else who maybe experience the same symptoms who will the ultimately have to have time off work whilst they tested!

If it was just a little cold I’d think whatever but what she got sounds nasty even if it’s not covid.

It just seems since covid all people seem
To take notice of is covid yet there’s so many other viruses going around that can be nasty too!

Nearly as annoying as to when parents send their kids into school with sickness bugs!

Personally I would stay home with flu

Well so would everyone, because when you have flu you stay in bed. You could try and drag yourself into work but it won't happen.

A teenage girl probably just has a bad cold.

But going about your normal business when you know you have an infectious illness is a bit of a dick move

I can't believe that anyone would think that you shouldn't go to a shop if you have a cold and feel well enough to go out.

Yes and no. There are some things aside from CV I would expect people to stay at home when ill. So would the NHS Grin

Just because she is a teen doesn't mean she can say no and parents bother to listen to her. Some parents infantilize those around them. Others simply don't care and will still drag them along regardless.

I am afraid OP's opinion will become the new norm or argued over high ground. I am struggling to cope with how risk averse people are becoming.

Fever is unusual with a cold, I agree if she had a high fever she shouldn’t be going out. Cough, very sore throat, fatigue aren’t classic cold symptoms, unless she also had sneezing/ runny nose? It’s actually not true that you’re unable to get out of bed with flu, you can be asymptomatic or have milder symptoms. They are different symptoms to a cold though, fever is much more common and runny nose isn’t a main symptom. Or it could be RSV which causes bronchioloitis in babies. My general rule would be fever- stay in, no fever- probably not that unwell. Given we all know that health services are under pressure I think we should all be trying to avoid passing potentially serious things to the vulnerable

Do you live with them? Have you witnessed how sick the girl is and how the illness is progressing?
Maybe Im a cynic but my experience of teenagers is that their symptoms can get much worse when the question of wether they are fit for school or not and then remarkably better when a more pleasing opportunity presents itself.
Obviously i have no idea what the facts of this case are but i wouldn't put too much store in the idea that if she was too sick for school yesterday she is too sick for shopping today.
