To expect people not to go out when ill even if it’s not covid.

Hi all, I know we can’t shut ourselves away every time we get a sniffle etc.

A good friend of mine told me this week that her teenage Dd had covid like symptoms - fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue etc. Got her a test and it came back negative which is great so on paper she doesn’t have to isolate anymore obviously.

Her daughter isn’t better yet (this was only a few days ago she got ill).

Yet she’s been mixing yesterday and today with others since negative result and gone shopping in a city today. Yet she didn’t go to school yesterday after negative results as she was still feeling poorly.

Aibu to think this is still a bit selfish? Putting covid aside, even before covid aibu to think this is selfish?

She could pass on whatever she’s got to someone else who maybe experience the same symptoms who will the ultimately have to have time off work whilst they tested!

If it was just a little cold I’d think whatever but what she got sounds nasty even if it’s not covid.

It just seems since covid all people seem
To take notice of is covid yet there’s so many other viruses going around that can be nasty too!

Nearly as annoying as to when parents send their kids into school with sickness bugs!

Yabvu.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 12/12/2020 17:28

You obviously want us all to start judging the parents and saying how selfish they are for some reason.

You should have said they didn't bother getting a covid test instead of trying to diagnose the kid when nobody judged, that would have probably done it op.

hannahwex · 12/12/2020 17:29

Usually I would agree with still going out with a cold etc

The problem is at the moment if anybody caught your cold then they have to get a test/ self isolate until they are sure it’s a cold

So overall I think it’s better to try and stay away from people until you feel better or wear masks if not able

I have had COVID and it just started like a general cold

Waxonwaxoff0 · 12/12/2020 17:31

I go to work when I am ill. Unless I have D&V or I physically can't work then I'm going in. When you earn minimum wage you can't afford to stay home whenever you're a bit ill. If you want me to stay home then campaign for better sick pay, I can't pay my bills on £90 odd a week.

PurpleHoodie · 12/12/2020 17:38

I think Op is American WaxOn with a different cultural mindset on the work environment.

I agree with you. And have actually continued attending work with broken bones. Getting old though, and This Morning gets more and more appealing by the week.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/12/2020 17:43

Ohhh dear God - this thread had made me channel my mother!! “If you are well enough to go shopping, my girl - you’re well enough to go to school!” Xmas ShockXmas Grin

PurpleHoodie · 12/12/2020 17:46

Xmas Grin How did I miss this years Saint Nick hats?!

SinkGirl · 12/12/2020 17:47

I’m surprised by the replies too. This isn’t a typical year - if you pass on a virus that causes cough and fever, everyone who catches it will have to self isolate and test, or (as with my children) self isolate for two weeks because you can’t test them. It’s one thing if you absolutely have to go to work, or have to go to school because your parents have to work, but going and doing non-essential things for the few days that you’re sick is a bit ridiculous in my opinion. I think this year we should try to limit going anywhere that isn’t entirely necessary when ill.

SinkGirl · 12/12/2020 17:49

So you probably can’t afford to take time off to self isolate every time you catch a cough or a fever then, especially if regularly exposed to viruses unnecessarily.

The people working in the shops she visited probably can’t afford to take time off either, but if they develop COVID type symptoms they won’t have a choice.

PurpleHoodie · 12/12/2020 17:53

Hopefully they'll get 100% of pay sick pay.

RobinHobb · 12/12/2020 17:53

@winesolveseverything

I haven't got either the time or inclination to even give this head space quite frankly.

The world has gone mad.

Lol Exactly summed up what I was thinking
PurpleHoodie · 12/12/2020 17:54

The government should concentrate on that and not stay-at-home-furlough pay.

MessAllOver · 12/12/2020 17:57

Prior to Covid, there was a very short list of illnesses I would have stayed off work for. Basically, if I could stand, I would go to work. Like it or not, malingering is not encouraged in the workforce and I need to save my days off for when DS is ill and nursery refuses to have him. Mollycoddling oneself when sick is an unavailable luxury for most parents. Post-Covid, I am very much on the lookout for Covid symptoms in our family but, absent that, we'll carry on regardless. A positive effect of masks/social distancing/better hand hygiene has been many fewer colds and bugs than last year.

That said, I wouldn't choose to drag a sick teenager around the shops when they could just be left at home so I do partially agree, OP.

OverTheRainbow88 · 12/12/2020 18:02

I agree OP. My friend sent her DD into nursery knowing she had a tummy upset; DD got swiftly send home that morning that afternoon she asked if we wanted to meet at the zoo... knowing her nursery said 48 hours before she could go back.. no thanks!

gallbladderpain · 12/12/2020 18:07

I agree OP although i understand how its impossible to stay in everytime someone is ill as well.
Theres such a culture of 'just carry on' in the UK and if you are too sick for school shouldn't be out shopping.
I have a vunerable DC and i hate nothing more than when i hear a parent in the playground saying 'he's dying with the cold hes so unwell' then a clearly too unwell for school child appears ! Why is he in school ?? because i know for a fact at that point that in less than 2 weeks i will be on a hospital ward with my own DC a lot closer to 'dying with the cold' and absolutely in no fit state to attend school for weeks ! Last year we lost pretty much an entire 5 months of school to the same scenario !
I understand every child with a cold can't stay off school but when they are young children who are visibly unwell themselves they have fevers and they just look and feel miserable then for gods sake stop with the presenteeism shit and keep them at home away from other people !

luckylavender · 12/12/2020 18:09

However ill she is or isn't- if she's well enough for shopping she's well enough for school.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 12/12/2020 18:10

There are a number of viruses going around as there usually are there is no reason for us to self isolate because we have a cold

Life has to go on as much as possible

You are being ridiculous op

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 12/12/2020 18:11

The thing is OP everything you are describing sounds like..... common cold.

Common colds are caused by tons of viruses - adenoviruses, coronaviruses, RSV, rhinoviruses. There can be a range of symptoms, fever, tiredness, sore throat, cough, conjunctivitis, congestion, sinusitis etc. These viruses are typically mild, they
are endemic, high contagious or infectious so near impossible to prevent spreading. In many cases the period of greatest transmission isnt when symptoms peak but before it, so staying home when its past its worst is likely pointless.

Mammyloveswine · 12/12/2020 18:12

I had a test weds as have a nasty cold and barking cough.. negative test!

Straight back to work as I'm ok but the amount of people suggesting i stay off has been ridiculous!

I'm a teacher and get loads of colds! I'm fine in myself and find to be in work!

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 12/12/2020 18:12

But yeah as PPs have said, she was probably well enough for school but what teenager admits to being well enough to go? Grin

SpreadeagledSquire · 12/12/2020 18:18

YABU you seem overly involved and also “fever, fatigue, sore throat” isn’t “much” more than a cold?!? If she was able to wonder the shops then surely the debilitation was not that extreme.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/12/2020 18:25

@luckylavender

However ill she is or isn't- if she's well enough for shopping she's well enough for school.
I didn’t know you were on MN, mum! Xmas WinkXmas Grin
TalkingIntoTheEther · 12/12/2020 18:53

It been suggested an effective t-cell response to Covid is based on prior exposure to other corona viruses, it is counterintuitive (and pious) to insist people with run-of-the-mill viruses lock themselves away.

Littleposh · 12/12/2020 19:15

The world can't stop because someone has a minor illness, absolutely ridiculous.

Far more selfish for workplaces (for example) to be constantly understaffed and have others work far too hard as people are constantly off

Annie2746 · 12/12/2020 19:38

@Nottherealslimshady

People have never stayed home to prevent passing flu on. That would be ridiculous. People have lives to get on with. The only thing you stay at home for is chickenpox and now covid.
I would hope people would stay at home when they have norovirus too 🤮

I get it people, I really do. The world doesn’t stop for a cold. But this seemed more than a cold.

Personally I would stay home with flu.

I am a mother of two disabled children plus I work part time. I haven’t had a sick day or a stay in bed day in years (thankfully I’m rarely ill). I get going to work when ill etc, even when I’m home and ill I don’t get to rest so I do get it.

I’m not saying for one minute she has to totally stay in. I just felt going to a busy shopping centre at current time a little silly when going shopping. It’s not exactly essential. She could have been left at home too whilst the others went.

For everyone saying they go work when ill. If were to catch this virus she had you would need time off to get a test that’s all and potentially losing money. It’s not easy to tell the difference between covid and other viruses.

My husband is the main earner in this house and his job won’t pay out full sick pay for covid related sick time (but always have done for other illnesses). We wouldn’t cope on SSP. If my son catches a cold it can be dangerous for him and it goes right to his chest which means covid test when he’s got a hacking cough! It’s a real stressful time right now!
