White blonde hair - what age did it change?

I’m a bit gutted. My just turned 9 year old has white blonde hair ( so white it almost glows in photos) she’s always had lots of comments about how pretty the colour is but I’ve noticed lately that the roots are getting darker. I know it’s winter and hair tends to go darker but hers never has in the past. How old were your white blonde kids when it started to go dark and how long did it take to change. How dark did it go? Thanks.

The boys' hair darkened around puberty. Ds1 was always dark blond but his hair has become a chestnutty light brown. Ds2 was born pale blond and had almost white body hair until he was about 12but now at 14 is mousy brown with coarse leg hair to match.

DH was ginger and his sister white blond and they both went mousy at puberty. DH still has ginger beard (turning white, now) and body hair, though.

Ds (16) is white blonde when he has it cut very short but as it grows out changes to darker shades of blonde. Not that you would notice at the moment because he has grown it shoulder length & dyed it pillar box red.

My dd is 8 and it's happened over the last few months. She had a haircut and suddenly it was noticeably dark blonde. I still feel surprised when I notice how dark it is - you are just used to their colouring. Also my hair is naturally mousey and her blonde is/was nicer - so I was hoping she'd keep it!

Ds was white blonde and he's still blonde but more dark at 14. I've noticed now though that his eyebrows and eyelashes are darkening - his eyes changed colour aged about 10/11. He was probably totally blonde until 5ish

7+

I had white blonde hair as a child and it started to darken when I was around 9. Having said that I am still naturally blonde, it's just more of a boring dark blonde colour.

Titsywoo · 11/12/2020 23:22

Loads of people in my family and DH's had white blonde hair as kids. For most of us it started changing at 7 or 8. I've ended up dark blonde, DH is medium brown but my Dad had almost black hair - all platinum blonde as kids!

She will absolutely notice your disappointment so get over it unless you want to give her a complex. It's not important. No one hair colour is more valuable than another.

This.

Why are you disappointed? That's horrible! I can't imagine being disappointed about anything to do with my DD, particularly not a physical feature.

waltzingparrot · 11/12/2020 23:35

DS darkened from white blond a little at about 14. His doctor told me when he was little that she thought he'd always be blond because his eyebrows and eyelashes were very fair.

AWryGiraffe · 11/12/2020 23:35

I was about 7 I think. Then a medium blonde and now in my 30s I'm definitely a dark blonde if I'm being charitable, mousy with some natural highlights if I'm not. I'd kill to have that hair colour now! Sadly my eyebrows and eyelashes are still white blonde 🤣

DramaAlpaca · 11/12/2020 23:38

DS1 was blond until he was 13, he's now dark blond like me.

DS3 was blond until he was 11, his hair is now mid brown.

Noti23 · 11/12/2020 23:38

Dp was very blonde until he became 23 and since then has become a gradually darker shade of mouse brown...I’m also disappointed

frustrationcentral · 11/12/2020 23:38

I believe DH was about 9/10 when his hair darkened. It's a light mousy brown/blonde now where he isn't bald Grin

iano · 11/12/2020 23:39

I really dislike the term mousey brown. It seems so negativ...
it's just as nice as any other colour! I don't get why people dislike it so much

Lots of people are disappointed when their DC lose their baby curls, I don’t see how this is anything different. If it is a feature you associate with your beautiful little baby, your child growing out of it reminds you that they aren’t a little baby any more, and it’s a bit sad. Nobody is saying there is anything wrong with brown hair, just that it’s bittersweet to see your child changing as they get older.

I am still a bit sad I will never hear DS’s adorable baby-talking again. I am extremely happy that he can talk properly. But it’s not quite as sweet.

She won’t notice as I haven’t mentioned it to her. She also wouldn’t care even if she did notice. She’s not bothered in the slightest what colour her hair is! 😂

I’m not disappointed with her! It’s just her hair not her personality. It’s not horrible to be disappointed that her beautiful hair that she’s had since she was born is changing. 😂

Her hair will be just as beautiful a different colour.

grassisjeweled · 12/12/2020 01:11

If she's very fairchances are she'll remain blonde, if not white blonde.

Does she have blue or green eyes? If she has brown eyes her hair will certainly darken.

80sColourfulChristmas · 12/12/2020 01:24

Mine changed from white blonde to golden at 26! Very very white blonde all through adolescence

NiceGerbil · 12/12/2020 03:34

Having very blonde hair as a girl is a double edged sword.

It was all anyone noticed, knew about me. It was a magnet for street harassment types.

It pigeonholed me.

Yes it's unusual and considered desirable but it comes at a price. So don't be sad.

I'm quite happy that my girls hair is darkening and hopefully won't define them.

whichwallywhere · 12/12/2020 04:01

I went from white blonde to brunette, I have no memory of my hair being white blonde and wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen the photos. My hair is darker now than it was two years ago, I used to say it was dark blonde, then light brown, now it's dark brown.

BikeRunSki · 12/12/2020 06:16

Me - about 13
DS - about 9
