Appendicitis

AIBU to ask how your symptoms of appendicitis started ?

I have had a really sudden sharp stabbing pain in my right ovary area since yesterday, when I woke up this morning it was alot more frequent and lasted longer. I called the doctor and they said it's either appendicitis or a cyst. I don't want to waste NHS time if it's a cyst and I thought with appendicitis it was a constant pain so did anyone else have this type pain and have to have their removed?

Have you got a fever?
Long term pain like this absolutely warrants going to a doctor. I mean, that's what they are there for...

SchrodingersImmigrant · 11/12/2020 18:09

Oh and yes. To the pain. Also burping a lot. Icing helped to relieve the pain before getting to A&E. Not me. My family member.

Noodledoodledoo · 11/12/2020 18:14

Felt like trapped wind, uncomfortable but not excruciating, managed to sleep thought sleep might relax everything and release wind. This was Thursday night, went in to be assessed on Friday by the time I was seen, was more complicated as I was also pregnant, I didn't feel in any pain unless I was poked in the right place then it hurt a lot! Was operated on on the Sunday actually checked it was needed as I had no pain at all.

Ismellphantoms · 11/12/2020 18:14

I had pain around my belly button and felt unwell all day. The next morning the pain had gone to the lower right hand side. I couldn't move or take a full breath because of the pain. I was in agony. My husband dialled 111 and they said they'd send an ambulance. Ambulance service rang to see if I really needed it and asked if I could walk to the bathroom. I couldn't even move! Emergency surgery the next day.

0ellenbrody0 · 11/12/2020 18:15

I had pain in the middle of my abdomen which travelled to my lower right side over the course of about 36 hours. I then had excruciating lower right pain (stabbing) along with vomiting.
DH whisked me to a&e at that point.
It was nearly 1 year ago (Boxing day) and I still cannot think about it without feeling traumatised 😬

Wishimaywishimight · 11/12/2020 18:16

Mine felt like wind at the start so I kept going to the bathroom to try and relieve it but it didn't help. Also felt like the waistband of my jeans was too tight. All started around 6.30 one evening. The pain got worse during the night, it was constant but there were waves of stronger pain which made me whimper! Also lost my appetite completely. I went to a clinic the next morning and was sent straight to hospital.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 11/12/2020 18:19

Just go get it checked out. It's so much better to be farted off in a hospital (as was once my mum😂) than having the appendix rapturing.

Again. Any pain like this which doesn't go away for a day or two absolutely needs to be checked out. Even if it turns out to be nothing but an air

Winditbackagain · 11/12/2020 18:56

Sounds horrendous!

No fever, only feel extremely hot when the pain comes on, no constant pain or full ache, no tight feeling at all just these random shooting pains that take my breath away and make me jump, abit like lighting crotch pain you have in pregnancy but in my lower right side.

I will go down to AnE in the morning if it's still happening, not the best of times to have this as I have my mum's funeral next week so I am hoping it's not the appendix, also have three small children that I'd have to take with me if I went now.

A dull constant low abdominal pain. I felt as if I didn't want to stand up straight.
DH was quite different, much more severe pain and vomitting.

SimonJT · 11/12/2020 19:04

I had a dull ache for a few days, a bit uncomfortable, but didn’t stop me doing anything, I thought it was a mild rugby injury. Then boom, severe pain, it was so severe I passed out, rushed to hospital by a friend and had to have emergency surgery as my appendix had ruptured. I then suffered a wound infection, so I had a packed wound that had to heal on its own, I didn’t realise that the risk of this happening is higher in emergency surgery.

Please don’t chance it.

Gardeniaofdelights · 11/12/2020 19:23

For me it was accompanied by fever and general feelings of sickness and unwellness.

I think you should get it checked out - appendicitis can turn nasty fast!

gingergiraffe · 11/12/2020 19:29

I experienced mild discomfort for about three weeks. Took a couple of paracetamol and carried on. Thought I had pulled a few muscles lifting heavy floor tiles. Went away for a week. The paracetamol stopped working and pain became quite uncomfortable. Daughter called a taxi and we went to a&e. After tests and scan to confirm, my appendix had burst but had built a pod to contain the infection. I thought if it burst, that was it! So, a week in hospital on intravenous antibiotics, which made me feel awful. The infection was too bad to operate. Once recovered, I had it removed via keyhole. It was very straightforward. The initial pain was never really severe.

On the other hand, ovarian cyst started to give intermittent pain. like period pain for a couple of weeks. Gradually became quite painful one night and the next morning I realised I had taken my quota of pain killers and still had pain, quite bad by now. Went to a&e and had emergency op the next day. Cyst had twisted around an ovary. Luckily the ovary was ok.

Op do not ignore your symptoms. There is obviously something wrong so make arrangements and get to a&e. Easier if you do not leave it until symptoms are really severe. Everyone’s symptoms are different but not an indication of how serious the the condition is. An ovarian cyst can be an emergency if it is causing pain so don’t be put off.

I think you'd be better to try and get seen tonight. Appendicitis doesn't always present 'classically' and you're worried enough to post.
nokidshere · 11/12/2020 19:33

I had severe sharp pains for about 24hrs and then I started vomiting. The hospital where a bit umm + ahh about whether it was gynaecology or appendix for a while. But I was in theatre within an hour of arriving at the hospital.

Apparantly one of the signs of appendicitis is that if you press down hard on your lower right side it won't hurt, but it will hurt as soon as you stop pressing. But I don't know if that's true or anecdotal.

Northernshepherd · 11/12/2020 19:34

For me it was also accompanied by lots of vomiting. I actually thought the pain was just because I'd pulled a muscle through that. Then yep suddenly bent double with intense heat-y pain. Get checked better safe than sorry if it ruptures it's very serious.

bruffin · 11/12/2020 19:37

Dh had all the classic symptoms which apparently quite rare. The doctors used him as a teaching tool.
He started with pain the week before, went on a work trip for a week, came back. That night he had stomach pain in the middle the moved to right side. He was sick and then started burning up. Called doctor who called ambulance and they took it out early next morning, it was close to bursting and peritonitis.

SparklingLime · 11/12/2020 19:38

I had pain in my upper back and just felt desperately uncomfortable, no fever. Doctor said it was a non-typical presentation. Turned out to be gangrenous.

ghostyslovesheets · 11/12/2020 19:39

Started like food poisoning- upset tummy and vomiting and pain - that stopped and the intermittent pain continued - went to hospital (then for a private scan - 18 weeks pregnant and abroad!) assumed food poisoning as baby fine

Stopped being sick etc but woke the next day feeling like I had pulled something being sick - dull ache throbbing in my side (lower than ovaries) went to English GP service who did the rebound thing and immediately said it’s appendicitis- got to hospital and finally surgery (spinal) where it burst!

That’s was fun!

peakotter · 11/12/2020 19:43

@ghostyslovesheets was baby ok?

I was also pregnant. I assumed mine was baby kicking at first. Then food poisoning. Then it ruptured and they had to deliver emergency section as she was being poisoned.

Op, go get checked out. If it ruptures then it’s a real mess inside and potentially life threatening.

Time2change2 · 11/12/2020 19:44

Bad stomach pain on the middle and to one side. Sickness and fever came on after 12 hours. Extremely high fever, extremely sick. Mine ruptured and it was a major operation with a fairly long stay in hospital. The part where is had ruptured and started to go septic was the worst agony.
Shooting pains sound like a cyst but if you start to get a fever or sickness, go to hospital and don’t leave until you are seen!!

Doublebubblebubble · 11/12/2020 19:47

I had a mild fever, fainted at work in front of guests (i worked at a hotel) vomiting bile oh and I couldnt walk at all.

The pain for appendicitis, for me, was worse than labour and worse than a csection.

I had a laparoscopy to get it taken out and when the doctor came round couple of days later he said that my appendix was turning itself inside out like a sock.

If you are worried op get checked.

ghostyslovesheets · 11/12/2020 19:56

Sorry - yes she’s just turned 12! It was iffy but she hung in there

whenwillthemadnessend · 11/12/2020 19:59

I've seen two people with it and both times they could only get comfortable with knees bent.

Dh was vomiting with the pain.

Babyiskickingmyribs · 11/12/2020 20:00

Mine started as sudden pain on my right side. It felt a bit like a menstruel cramp, except it didn’t unclench at all, it just kept going. The pain started at maybe 7pm and by midnight I decided I needed to go to A&E. I didn’t feel like I had a fever but I actually did when they checked me at the hospital. It was very painful (but not as painful as active labour contractions). I didn’t have any gastric symptoms at all. They kept me in hospital overnight and did an ultrasound the next morning to confirm diagnosis and then they removed it around 6pm I believe. So 24 hours from first pain to having surgery. Don’t mess around OP. If it gets worse overnight and you’re looking after the kids it’ll be a scary situation for them. Have you got anyone you can call to come and look after them tonight ? You could take them to A&E with you but if they need to keep you in someone will have to come get the kids from the hospital anyway.

Winditbackagain · 11/12/2020 21:18

Thankyou everyone.

Seems mine must be cysts related, I blame the coil! The past hour the stabbing has been happening very frequently, especially when I'm walking, I've been laying down most of the day.

I've let a family member know what's going on and so if I need AnE they can have the kids for me.
