EU blackmailing the UK

houseinthesnow · 11/12/2020 05:31

So it comes to pass. The EU have decided unless we agree to their unreasonable demands they will halt all travel, including air and road travel whilst still fishing in our waters apparently!

It is nothing short of piracy.

The true nature of the EU has been exposed for some time, hence our departure - but now no one can be any doubt just to the levels they will sink to.
The EU have no interest in trade relations, nor cooperation, they only seek control and power. The trading relations is and was always, window dressing to create a superstate - and it seems they are now not afraid to inflict as much damage as possible to stop a member leaving.
Even the most passionate remainer will now see how deeply disturbing this behaviour actually is.

One could argue it is an act of war in fact.

It should be treated as such.

I will happily eat beans to the end of my days than be blackmailed by the EU. We all knew it would get nasty at the end, but who they knew they were capable of this. I suppose we can't be that surprised given the past. The gloves are off now for sure - and that goes both ways we should remind them.

Hard hats on.

Yadddnbu op it’s so wonderful. I am so happy at our democracy being protected and is able to reap all of the benefits of leaving the eu.

Namenic · 11/12/2020 09:00

Randomlondoner - pretty sure that china and us will negotiate as hard as eu. It’s not about who is superior, it’s about who has more need for a deal with the other. If eu don’t need U.K. then they can push for harder terms. Same with U.K. not needing EU. That is symmetrical. The difference is that U.K. are much smaller and have less bargaining power than EU. Eu forms a bigger percentage of our total trade than U.K. trade as a percentage of total eu trade.

Zilla1 · 11/12/2020 09:00

But even an oven-ready deal needs an oven. and a cook. If the spiteful EU are going to smash up the oven then the best-laid plans of mice and men...

RedToothBrush · 11/12/2020 09:01

ALL Trade Deals require compromise and giving up a little soverignty.

Wait til you get a load of the unelected beaucratics and corruption at the WTO!

UrAWizHarry · 11/12/2020 09:01

" It's like they want the UK to fail in its glorious endeavour."

No shit, Sherlock.

Zilla1 · 11/12/2020 09:02

Everyone should stop expecting the PM to sign up to things that no PM, no sovereign nation could be expected to sign.

Lonelycrab · 11/12/2020 09:02

Jesus wept. Go to war, eh? Confused

What a fucking dogs dinner the OP is.

frumpety · 11/12/2020 09:04

We left the EU, remember back in January, I know a lot has happened since then, but we did leave. We have had a grace transition period where in reality nothing changed, so we left but remained.

The Government has had four long years to work out what sort of Brexit would benefit the UK population the most, because surely that was what Brexit was about ? doing something that would benefit the vast majority of the population ?

Remember back in the day when we were still going to be in the SM and CU ? When we were told by those in Government that it would be the easiest deal in history, that a deal was oven ready, that it could be done in time for tea or over a cup of tea or other such rubbish ?

It made sense to have reciprocal arrangements with our closest neighbours for trade and travel and other areas where we share common goals. Most leave voters I know agree on that.

So why did this Government decide to ignore that and go all hard brexity ? It isn't a situation that will benefit the majority of the population, so why would this Government choose it ?

Zilla1 · 11/12/2020 09:04

@Parker231, I heard the Minister say he didn't recognise that figure. Entirely understandable, he could have been off school when the number 5 was taught.

maddy68 · 11/12/2020 09:04

We are no longer part of the EU therefore we are the same as every other non member. So your point is? You got what you voted for surely you should be elated ?

Cornettoninja · 11/12/2020 09:04

@Parker231

Supermarkets are forecasting a price increase of at least 5% on a no deal exit due to the tariffs. There is also likely to be shortages of fresh produce and it will have very short shelf life.
May as well get used to it. The EU grant a limited number of haulage licenses for non-eu countries. We’ve just been granted 2k for the 20k odd hauliers we have.

Excellent work.

Tootletum · 11/12/2020 09:04

Brexit is a tax wheeze. It has nothing but negatives for normal people and I can't believe the penny hasn't dropped that bojo and Co Lied for a laugh.

Parker231 · 11/12/2020 09:09

@Cornettoninja - I was listening to radio interviews yesterday with hauliers explaining the impact of limited licenses.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 11/12/2020 09:09

HOWcan anyone think like this?

Only 33% of the population now support Brexit. I ducking hope it brings down the government ( and l use the word government loosely)

🤦🏽‍♀️

PurpleHoodie · 11/12/2020 09:11

What tootletum said.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 11/12/2020 09:11

When I cancelled my gym membership I couldn’t believe the cheeky fuckers wouldn’t let me use the treadmill and rowing machine any more ! I had to spend thousands on buying my own for home and they’re not as good.

cdtaylornats · 11/12/2020 09:13

Nothing the EU has asked for is unreasonable

So if the UK decided on higher welfare standards for rearing chickens you would agree the EU must follow our rules?

kungfupannda · 11/12/2020 09:14

I'm really angry with my gym. I had a monthly, all-inclusive membership, and I was a member of the gym-users forum, feeding back to the management about what classes we'd like etc. I decided I didn't want to pay the monthly fee, so I switched to pay-as-you go, with no classes or peak-hour access included. They now won't let me in during peak hours, and I'm not allowed to join in any of the classes without paying for them. I've spent the last 4 years arguing with them about it, but they won't back down. It's a crime and a breach of my human rights!

Spectacular cross-post!
oatmilk4breakfast · 11/12/2020 09:17

I can't work out if the OP is real. I mean, seriously? Vote Leave lied to you, you voted for a better deal, then an oven-ready deal, and now you're happy to eat beans and sit in a tin helmet waiting for war with....what? A trading bloc? A multi-national mutual cooperation peace project?
GROW. UP. READ.
Or rather read something that hasn't already been used to wipe wealthy news moguls' arses. Brexit didn't need to have been a disaster. But successive Conservative governments have managed to make sure through a mixture of corruption and incompetence that it will be the people who already don't have much who will suffer the worst of it.

pinkearedcow · 11/12/2020 09:17

What you mean is, unless we reach a deal, from 1st January the EU will treat the UK as a non-EU country and apply the rules it has in place.

What a very silly OP. Act of war? If it is an avt of war, it's a war (some of) the UK started.

pinkearedcow · 11/12/2020 09:17

act.

PerkingFaintly · 11/12/2020 09:17

These attitudes are a major part of why the majority voted us out of the EU and why Trump was voted in in America.

Trump's been voted out in America. Turns out he couldn't fool all of the people all of the time.

The only comfort is that when Mumsnet gets this angry it's usually wrong.

See above.

cdtaylornats · 11/12/2020 09:18

allbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

and did you find a bill for when you were leaving, or a demand the treadmill you bought be the same make and model as the gym's?

If you want an example of EU duplicity, consider that a British trucker faces the same restriction an Irish trucker will, and despite "freedom of movement" that Irish trucker having come through the UK will have to show proof he is Irish when he gets to an EU country.
