AIBU to open Christmas cards before Christmas day?

BlueTit4xmas · 11/12/2020 00:37

Year after year, DP and I have the same disagreement. I open Christmas cards as and when they arrive. He saves his until Christmas. Both insist we are correct.

So I've decided to take this to Mumsnet, please settle the argument for me: do you open your cards before or on Christmas Day?

YABU to open Christmas cards before 25th December - wait!
YANBU to open Christmas cards before 25th December and I do this too

We open ours as we receive them and display them until 1 Jan when we take everything down.

VetiverAndLavender · 11/12/2020 10:00

It's weird to wait. They're cards, not gifts! I don't do cards anymore, but everyone I've known has opened them and displayed them. If you wait, you don't get to enjoy them in the lead-up to Christmas.

CharitySchmarity · 11/12/2020 10:07

Cards when they arrive, presents on the day (apart from Secret Santa, where you'd be a bit of a spoilsport to refuse to open them).

MaidofKent78 · 11/12/2020 10:11

My DH is one of the 1% who think you wait. He's weird. I tell him this frequently. He argues it's one of the reasons I love him. He has a point but when it comes to Christmas cards, HE'S WRONG.

Horehound · 11/12/2020 10:13

I imagine he views it like a birthday which I sometimes keep cards for and then open on the day. But j agree it's like a throwback to getting money in a card and I assume he isn't 10 years old now so the is crazy!

madcatladyforever · 11/12/2020 10:15

Whats wrong with your DH? Of course you open your cards as soon as you get them. I like to enjoy looking at all my cards throughout December and hanging them up, it adds to the festive feeling.
I don't know anyone in the world ever who opens their cards on Christmas day!
Is he trying to wind you up?

ApolloandDaphne · 11/12/2020 10:15

You open them when they arrive. How weird to keep them.

actiongirl1978 · 11/12/2020 10:16

You open when received, read, show to DH, put into the bill filing system thing in the kitchen and then put in the bin, unless MIL or DM are coming and theirs get put on a shelf to be seen.

Messy horrible things, but I've never heard of anyone waiting until Xmas day ever!

Bin85 · 11/12/2020 10:27

Open as they come so you can reciprocate if you want

Brighterthansunflowers · 11/12/2020 10:35

I keep all presents until Christmas Day (and people think I’m weird for doing that!) but I always open cards straight away. If you wait til 25th you have no time to enjoy them being up before you’re taking them down again. And if you get a card from someone you haven’t sent one too, if you open it straight away you can send them one back.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/12/2020 10:35

You open them as soon as they arrive, and in our house, once there are enough, I blu-tack them in slightly overlapping rows to sundry painted surfaces. Nice and Christmassy.

81Byerley · 11/12/2020 10:35

@PurpleDaisies You don't put them in those crappy Christmas tree holders because you can't see them all...and they keep falling on the floor. You hang them with miniature pegs on string or ribbon around the walls, so they're out of the way but make the room look Christmassy!

Anoisagusaris · 11/12/2020 10:37

Obviously when they arrive!

Birthday cards are different and have to wait until the day.

Christmas is a period, birthdays are a day.

Angel2702 · 11/12/2020 10:39

I have never known anyone to do this, cards are displayed throughout with the decorations. He is definitely in the minority.

ClinkyMonkey · 11/12/2020 10:45

Surely the whole point is to display your cards so that everyone can see how popular you are. There doesn't seem to be any point in waiting. You open your cards, OP, and let him squirrel his away if he wants. Weirdo.

FPS123 · 11/12/2020 10:46

Whoops - I ticked the wrong box. I’m the 100% that said YABU but I meant HWBU. You open Christmas cards as they arrive.

Twiddlet · 11/12/2020 10:53

He is the only person on the planet waiting until Christmas Day. If they are cards with a gift in eg money, people usually write on them not to open until the 25th.

VickyEadieofThigh · 11/12/2020 10:56

Of COURSE you open them immediately. What nonsense to wait until Xmas day.

HOkieCOkie · 11/12/2020 10:57

Cards are to open and display in the lead up to Xmas.

wirldsgonemad · 11/12/2020 10:57

Always as soon as you receive them!!!

AngelonTopoftheTree · 11/12/2020 10:58

@FPS123 you can just tick the other option to change your vote. Wouldn't want OP's DO thinking anyone agrees with him!!Grin

Definitely open as they arrive!

HallFloor · 11/12/2020 10:58

Presents never, ever early, but cards when they arrive.

It is true though that if I suspect there might be money in a card for DC, I put that one away for Christmas Day.

AngelonTopoftheTree · 11/12/2020 10:58

DO = DP

HitthatroadJack · 11/12/2020 11:05

It's especially weird if you are getting one of the cards most people from the UK seem to prefer, with barely a:

to. xxx
love from xxx

What could possibly the point of waiting for that!

Letters or lazy cards are mail, I open mine when it arrives. I can't think of anyone who save their cards either.

Gazelda · 11/12/2020 11:12

Open them on arrival. Put them on display. The more cards you have, the less you need to dust.
