Mine is that a traditional Christmas dinner is horrible
Turkey - bleurgh, so dry
Sprouts - farts posing as leaves
Parsnips - how can anyone put them in their mouth?!
Stuffing - like eating sand
Christmas pudding - sour booze disguised as cake
Christmas cake - way too dry and that much fruit does not belong in a sponge

I'd honestly be happy with a plate of pigs in blankets, a jar of cranberry sauce and a spoon to eat the sauce straight from the jar.

Die Hard is not a Christmas film.

@TeenyTinyDustinHoffman

I once casually told my grandad that I didn't understand how he enjoyed watching football. That is 20 minutes of my life which I will never get back. It was still less tedious than watching people on here pretending that "I don't understand" isn't a commonly used turn of phrase. It's picking an argument where there isn't one.
To make it clear: both sides of the argument were steeped in sarcasm (and is pretending not to understand THAT more or less tedious?).

They are trying to suggest that the boxes are so utterly without purpose as to be incomprehensible, and I am trying to suggest that they are being wilfully obtuse because their real reasons for not liking the boxes suck and they don't want to admit it, and there really isn't anything wrong with people who do find them a pleasant mood enhancer. I do tend to pull up the "I just can't UNDERSTAND them" rhetoric because it does seem to me to be used disproportionately frequently against boxes and elves, along with moral castigation. And, I admit, it amuses me when someone says "I don't understand Christmas boxes! I don't understand pyjamas!" and someone replies, "What are you struggling with?"

99% of the time, it's classism masquerading as noble anti-consumerism and anti-waste, and it never seems to be applied to expensive tech or foreign holidays or any other much more expensive things that are considered middle class. And it's not a moral issue. Guess that's my unpopular Christmas opinion.

praepondero · 15/12/2020 13:05

All the Christmas tat, starting with those ghastly jumpers and pajamas - why? The sausage-meat based stuffing is revolting, anything that uses sausage-meat is, well, apart from some sausages. Mince pies, Christmas cake, Christmas pudding, way too pungent and samey, stodgy pointless things.
Sprouts - why were they ever invented [despairs].
Yorkshire Puddings are the very best things British gastronomy has gifted to the world and must be eaten with any roasted meat/fowl/etc. and at all times, including breakfasts.

My goodness sounds like someone is desperate to have the last word. 🙄

TheKeatingFive · 15/12/2020 13:14

It's your job to handle this sort of thing. Other parents aren't responsible for it. Many houses are from other backgrounds that don't do Christmas at all. I doubt your kids think that Santa doesn't like Jewish or Muslim children. What do you tell them?

Exactly. Different households have different traditions.

SmileyClare · 15/12/2020 13:27

I'm always surprised at the threads after Christmas moaning about presents received. It's like a terrible Christmas come down...fantasy versus reality.

It's almost a personal insult on here if anyone receives a present from the Boots 3 for 2 range. so generic and thoughtless A few people are "devastated" that their partner bought the wrong slippers or something...I'm in floods of tears because they clearly don't know me after 12 years of marriage!

Presents given to the children from relations are nearly always described as "plastic tat" or clutter. Weirdly it's only In Laws you don't like that buy plastic tat. Presumably families members you like are buying ethically crafted wooden toys or classic time pieces.

I like reading those threads though Grin

Sometimes, I admit. In this case, no, but if you're offering...

I agree. There are a lot of overgrown children out there it seems.

What's even dafter is when this sort of complaint is made about the office Secret Santa, though I guess that won't be much of an issue this year. I couldn't believe the number of people who appeared to be seriously offended that Mark from accounts, who knows nothing about this person and had a £5 budget, had chosen to buy "thoughtless chocolates". Actual phrase I saw more than once.

Though that does imply that there are empath chocolates out there who will understand your pain and counsel you in your hour of need. I'd quite like those if you can get them. Offload, then eat.

UnpropitiousNightmares · 15/12/2020 14:00

Oh my gosh.. Yorkshire puds go with roast dinners no matter what meat we're having.

Not only do I make them for all my roast dinners but I also make them for the sole purpose of putting strawberry jam on them once they're cooked; It's such a delicious treat! :)))

This^ It's Secret Santa. What did you expect ? It's a bit of fun/gesture of goodwill.

Except for the 'jokers' who think it's funny to put a sex toy or saucy undies in their Secret Santa gift, taking advantage of the secret of secret Santa for some covert bullying/enjoying the recipient's embarrassment.

praepondero · 15/12/2020 14:15

@UnpropitiousNightmares, you are a gastronomic genius! In praepondero household, jam on Yorkshire Puddings is a staple. I'm now thinking of taking this a level up - how about a dollop of good vanilla ice cream and a dollop of strawberry jam in a gorgeous crispy, chewy YP?
Nirvana.

LilyE1234 · 15/12/2020 14:21

I hate the gluttony of it all. Don’t get me wrong, I love cheese as much as the next person, but listening to peoples hour by hour plans of what they’re going to be eating really grosses me out.

I also hate the word ‘trimmings’ when speaking about Christmas dinner.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 15/12/2020 14:22

Yorkshire puds go with roast dinners no matter what meat we're having

I dont eat the meat in a roast dinner...i have extra yorkshire puddings instead

PrincessNutNutRoast · 15/12/2020 14:33

I'm throwing in my hand with the Yorkies lot, they definitely go with Christmas dinner. I'm veggie, one year it was Yorkies with stuffing and it was amazing.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 15/12/2020 14:37

Used to have yorkshires with dinner and then with syrup on for puddin’

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 15/12/2020 14:37

Oh and i do have recipe for them with Parmesan

bgnhlr · 15/12/2020 14:41

SmileyClare · 15/12/2020 14:55

Thoughtless chocolates from Mark in accounts haha yes

or being really insulted that MIL bought a set of body wash and hand cream when she should know I have sensitive skin and only use Estee Lauder ultra replenishing creme for ultra special hands! She clearly hates me and the present has been binned!

He he. Makes for great post Christmas reading.

PrincessNutNuts · 15/12/2020 14:56

People will die in January because of who they mix with at Christmas.

bgnhlr · 15/12/2020 14:58

@PrincessNutNuts

People will die in January because of who they mix with at Christmas.
They should've finished school early so that kids aka germbags could isolate for the two weeks before seeing their relatives on Xmas Day. Unpopular opinion I guess because it won't work for everybody.

Stay safe all

HoxtonBonnet · 15/12/2020 15:21

Christmas trees should come down the day after New Year's Day - as far as I am concerned it is over by then and I don't want to look at a sad droopy tree any more!

praepondero · 15/12/2020 15:47

My Christmas tree will stay up for as long as it looks pretty, in recent years it could have stayed and waited for the next Christmas. We choose and have our trees delivered from a local farm and they are the most gorgeous and long-lasting things, ever!
