To contact Subway?!

whatonearths · 09/12/2020 19:21

So DP and I were Christmas shopping this afternoon and decided to have a quick and easy stop off lunch at Subway..

I had a vegetarian patty with salad, DP had chicken.

Fast forward to around 45 -1hr later, and I couldn't get off the toilet. We were out in the city centre a long way from the car park we had parked in - so this was really, REALLY inconvenient. Every 10 mins or so I had to rush to the toilet..
I'm now at home.. it's been 4.5hours and I'm now cold, shivery and feeling very sick.

Silly question perhaps, but can you get food poisoning from a vegetarian item of food?! I am not a vegetarian but fancied it today..

Also, where would I stand in writing to / emailing subway? I've not been this unwell in a LONG time.

Did you have any dressing on it? That could’ve been off.

I’d definitely contact them though and raise it

ShirleyPhallus · 09/12/2020 19:24

You can get food poisoning from pretty much anything. Unwashed salad can contain listeria.

However you can’t actually prove that it was your subway. Food poisoning can take a few hours or up to 48 hours (I think) to show up so it could be anything.

I’d email Subway anyway as yours mightn’t be an isolated case and they’ll probably apologise and offer you a tenner in vouchers or something

Hope you feel better

ToughLoveLDN · 09/12/2020 19:25

Did the server change their gloves if they handle the meat first? I always have to remind them at our local

That's really nothing to do with this.

Yes, you can contact them. They can check their stock. If it was the patty, as pp said, you wouldn't be the only one because it's never just 1 defrosted. Same for sauce etc.
Don't expect anything bar apology because pp was correct that you cannot prove it was them unless tests are done because food poisoning times vary massively.

ToughLoveLDN · 09/12/2020 19:42

@SchrodingersImmigrant is it not? I haven’t eaten meat in so long that I imagine if I was to eat something that had been contaminated I would get sick

SnackyLady · 09/12/2020 19:45

Former subway employee here - if the manager is anything like my previous managers they will just say that food poisoning can be any food consumed within the last 48 hours and you can't prove it was them. They won't take any responsibility. Might Chuck you some vouchers if they're feeling nice tho

hashbrownsandwich · 09/12/2020 19:48

Food poisoning doesn't usually start until around 7 hours later. This was always the stance of health and hygiene when I worked as a chef. Luckily we never had any genuine cases of poisoning it was just some cheeky fuckers trying it on.

LadyAcony · 09/12/2020 19:50

I’m no doctor but I’d have thought that something happening 45 minutes to an hour later would have been vomiting rather than diarrhoea. It seems more likely to be caused by something else.

Either way it sounds horrible and I hope you’re feeling better very soon Flowers

UrAWizHarry · 09/12/2020 19:50

If it happened that quickly it's unlikely to be food poisoning from the sandwich. You can contact them but honestly they'll just note it in a logbook somewhere and nothing more will be done.

Ohtherewearethen · 09/12/2020 19:55

Yes it seems doubtful that you would have fallen ill so quickly after eating the Subway.

I haven’t eaten meat in so long that I imagine if I was to eat something that had been contaminated I would get sick
You think that eating something that had been touched by the same gloves that had previously touched meat would cause you to get the gallops? Are you severely allergic to meat?

Hayeahnobut · 09/12/2020 19:56

@ToughLoveLDN Eating a new food (meat) wouldn't make you sick. You may have a psychological aversion to eating meat, so could become sick through anxiety.

skippetyskoo · 09/12/2020 19:56

My husband once caught salmonella. We had eaten the same food for the previous day or so and hadnt been anywhere. The doctor thought it was likely to be a ham sandwich 48 hours previously at work. It can take a few days to show. Hope you feel better soon.

MiddleClassMother · 09/12/2020 19:58

You can but it's hard to prove it's from subway. It could be anything else you ate. I had this with another popular fast food restaurant (golden arches👀) and got no where.

YoureNotOnTheList · 09/12/2020 19:59

What did you eat yesterday? As PPs have said, 45 minutes seems too short a time to get the trots.

PEKitInAJaneNormanBag · 09/12/2020 20:02

You poor thing, that sounds hideous. I hope you’re feeling better, have you got some Dioralyte to sip? Not a doctors but I agree with a PP, 45 mins seems very fast for food poisoning to cause diarrhoea.

DH and I had food poisoning from McDonalds - we’d both eaten it at 8pm and were hideously sick the following afternoon, it was 2015 and I’ve not eaten there since!

Mousehole10 · 09/12/2020 20:03

As pps have said it's unlikely to be the subway as 45 mins isn't really long enough to cause that. Did you eat anything unusual for breakfast or last night? Sorry for you though, it's the kind of thing I dread happening in public. How did you get home? I hope you're feeling better now.

Figgyboa · 09/12/2020 20:03

Unlikely to be the Subway, food poisoning takes several hours to present.

loutypips · 09/12/2020 20:06

Salad is one of the worst things for food poisoning! Might be worthwhile contacting environmental health too.

lurker101 · 09/12/2020 20:06

This is how my suspected COVID started

whatonearths · 09/12/2020 20:07

Thanks all, I'm now trying to rack my brains to think what I had eaten yesterday! 😩 the subway is all I had eaten today.
Currently in bed shaking like a leaf 😔

Could be a bug.

Unless you still have part of that sandwich. It would be hard to prove it was subway

You also wouldn’t feel shivery with food poisoning really. It wouldn’t cause a temp.

Sounds like a bug

MrsMigginsMate · 09/12/2020 20:13

Just a heads up OP, some local councils are urging residents to take covid tests for symptoms like this in an effort to catch more of the non typical cases. Check out your local council website to see if that's the case, they will explain how to go about booking it as you have to select a specific reason on the booking website. Fingers crossed it's just a 24 hour bug, but you could order a home test to be sure.

Agreed. Sounds like you have norovirus and the subway was just a coincidence.
DontStopThinkingAboutTomorrow · 09/12/2020 20:27

It seems really quick to be food poisoning, so it's probably unlikely to be the subway.
Upset stomach could also be a sign of covid. Some councils are offering enhanced testing, so may be worth doing one.

2beautifulbabs · 09/12/2020 20:29

Sounds more like norovirus my DH had that this time last year and was really ill couldn't keep anything down and kept shaking and feel cold and hot it lasted for a week and he had to go to drs in the end for meds to be able to stop being sick.

I agree with others it doesn't sound like food poisoning.
