Stuart Lubbock

So I've been recently listening to podcasts and listened to "they walk among us" about the tragic death of Stuart Lubbock.

I also watched the all4 documentary "Barrymore: body in the pool"

I am outraged that no one has been charged!!

There is so much wrong with the case... why wasn't MB PA interviewed at your inquest after he was allowed to "clean up" and then evidence which had been photographed had gone missing???

It's been almost 20 years and still poor Stuart's horrific death has an open verdict!

I haven't actually asked a question .

AIBU in saying that Stuart Lubbock's murder has been covered up?

I think these threads get zapped but YANBU

SmidgenofaPigeon · 09/12/2020 17:52

That was a good episode of TWAU.

Yeah it’s outrageous.

Mammyloveswine · 09/12/2020 17:53

@NiceGerbil it's just horrific and I'm flabbergasted that no one has been charged!

But then I heard and read about Natalie Connolly which is the most disturbing case I've ever read.. and her killer only served 20 months in jail!

It is an absolute disgrace that sexually induced murders are just not taken seriously!

@SmidgenofaPigeon I was hooked.. the podcast is brilliant but also shocking!!

SmidgenofaPigeon · 09/12/2020 17:57

Sadly yes there are more that have just been bodged and as a result a conviction is difficult. It’s nuts. I thought they opened another inquest into SL recently but I may have made that up in my head

NiceGerbil · 09/12/2020 17:59

I think they did look at it again a couple of years ago or something and the upshot was nothing going to happen.

ShirleyPhallus · 09/12/2020 18:02

Absolutely outrageous. That poor man had terrible internal injuries and MB tried to blame the nurses for it once he’d been taken in to hospital.

Also wonder what happened to the other 8 people - think there were 3 women and 5 men there that night? Someone must know something.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 09/12/2020 18:04

Ah yeah I just looked at it-Essex police offered a £20,000 grand reward for info leading to an arrest, after the documentary aired.
MB sued Essex police for damages but later dropped the claim.

VenusClapTrap · 09/12/2020 18:04

Yanbu. That poor man. Although I don’t think it’s a cover up, more cock up of an investigation.

Mammyloveswine · 09/12/2020 18:07

@ShirleyPhallus exactly this!!

OP posts:
Mammyloveswine · 09/12/2020 18:08

@VenusClapTrap vital evidence was removed when MB pa was in allowed to "clean up".. yet I can see no evidence of him being interviewed!

dustyknickers · 09/12/2020 18:11

I've always been astounded by this case and MB playing the victim afterwards.

Mammyloveswine · 09/12/2020 18:12

@dustyknickers the podcast is extremely interesting as it's so thorough and goes through so much evidence! It had honestly chilled me!

Thepilotlightsgoneout · 09/12/2020 18:24

It might seem ‘outrageous’ but you can’t charge people if there’s not enough evidence.

DrDavidBanner · 09/12/2020 18:25

That was a really good podcast. I remember the crime at the time and it was very shocking. MB was on the same kind of level as Ant & Dec so I wouldn't be suprised if something went on behind the scenes.

I didn't know a lot of he things that came out in the podcast, that poor man, and his pr family have never had any real closure or justice for what happened to him.

andawaywego · 09/12/2020 18:33

I'll have to check out that podcast, thanks. I watched the documentary a while ago, and the case was much more shocking than I thought. I always assumed it was a big party with dozens of people, but it was a small gathering, which makes MB not knowing anything so much weirder. And I didn't know the poor guy's injuries were so horrific. They tried to sell the story as him getting drunk and falling in the pool, but when you hear more about it, it's all so dodgy.

It's absolutely crazy that they let MB do Celebrity Big Brother just a few years later. And he came across as such an unreptentant, bullying, self-pitying knob. I'm glad he's mostly off the telly nowadays.

Mammyloveswine · 09/12/2020 19:15

@andawaywego the podcast is brilliant...it's over 4 parts I think!

Goes into so much detail!

If you check it out please also listen to Natalie Connollys story.., listening to the details and then reading the court transcripts I'm still shocked at the verdict..it's harrowing but I feel the details of these cases do need to be heard in their entirety!

OP posts:
Mammyloveswine · 09/12/2020 19:16

@Thepilotlightsgoneout oh I totally get it but the whole investigation and reporting was just totally flawed!

OP posts:
MyOwnSummer · 09/12/2020 19:35

It is possible that there was an element of homophobia in how the case was handled, particularly the stereotypes around gay men's lifestyles. You've only got to look at the serial killer in Barking, which was recent. The killer should have easily been caught after #1, his story made zero sense but somehow he was left free to kill three more young men. Awful.

longwayoff · 09/12/2020 19:39

YANBU OP. Disgraceful case.

Mammyloveswine · 09/12/2020 19:46

@MyOwnSummer oh totally!! It doesn't seem long ago but it is actually shocking how different attitudes were in the 90s and early 2000s!

OP posts:
Mammyloveswine · 09/12/2020 19:48

@MyOwnSummer and yes agree about that case which was much more recent!!

I think also the judiciary are often very out of touch and that also plays a huge part!

KilronanLass · 09/12/2020 22:28

There was a great thread on here just after the documentary. The police were reopening the case and had new evidence which suggested they could bring Barrymore in but the pandemic hit so the case has most likely been put on hold.

dayswithaY · 09/12/2020 22:54

I'm always amazed that not a single person who was at the house that night has spoken out. One of them was Barrymore's boyfriend, they hadn't been together long and I think they split up after, why wouldn't he talk? The rest of the party was made up of various locals who didnt really know each other or Barrymore. If I had been to a random celeb's house and a terrible crime happened I would tell the police everything I knew. I suspect money has changed hands.

The story was pitched very differently back in 2001, as far as the press were concerned it was just a group of gay men at a party abusing drink and drugs and Stuart's death was an accident. I don't think it was taken as seriously as it should have been. All it takes is for an important witness to step forward now and it could change things.
