to have become a bit obsessed with this house?

Like many of us, I like a bit of fantasy house shopping on Rightmove.

I am planning to move but in 3-5 years so not just yet.

I've found a house I really like. Really really like. Thing is, it's not my 'dream' house. It has a nice garden (plot in total is half an acre) but it's not surrounded by masses of land. It's not a beautiful old manor house or cute country cottage. But there's something about it that has drawn me in. I have viewed the Rightmove page 100s of times now. It's not far from my DP so we took a drive out to it and nosed through the windows (it's an estate sale, vacant possession) and that made me love it even more.

I can't buy it yet as we simply couldn't raise the money needed, I have about 25% in cash but I don't earn enough to get a mortgage for the rest on my own, and DP pays himself only just above min wage. Plus it needs money spending on it, and neither of us are in a position to move right now. If it was for sale in 3 years time that would be perfect.

So I know it's not meant to be, but still...I really need to find a distraction (this was a distraction from being sad about lockdown, working from home, feeling isolated etc but has now become an obsession. Every day I check that it's not been sold!). Any suggestions? - other than hoping for a lottery win/ mystery inheritance.

Abd I can tell you that moving from a draughty, damp Edwardian pile where the water ran down the windows moving to a well insulated house has been delightful.

IndiaMay · 09/12/2020 13:43

I think its lovely and I love it!

Speak to a mortgage broker to see what you can afford, see if you can go in for less.

It doesn't need that much spent on it. Or at least not right away. Its livable! We are in the process of buying a house which needs total and complete renovation throughout and we have nothing left money wise after making the purchase. We will just do all the work ourselves and do one room at a time. We have a 2 year plan for it.

VeganCow · 09/12/2020 13:47

@Atrixie

Apart from the pretty garden, what do you like about it? It's not a pretty house and needs a small fortune spending on it.
Why does it need a fortune spending on it?
MargosKaftan · 09/12/2020 13:51

Ooh I like that! The layout works well, its quite a large kitchen. You could change flooring and paint and put mid century furniture in, and it would look fabulous.

Put in a cheeky offer. They might say no, but they might say yes.

The fact it is empty suggests they need it to sell quickly.

I’ve been window shopping in preparation for my euromillions win on Friday.

£1million for this www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/93045377#/media?id=media1

Did someone spontaneously combust in the living room?! Lovely corner shop across the road though....

Also this, love they blurred out the picture in photo 17 lol.

googlepoodle · 09/12/2020 13:52

I would agree it will need a lot of money on it - new kitchen, replace all doors, newboiler and central heating, probably rewiring.

googlepoodle · 09/12/2020 13:53

I think you are talking at least 150k if you want to extend in the kitchen

"jenex1 - Shrewsbury and the surrounds are lovely, the town itself looks beautiful at the moment with the Christmas lights up! There is a LOT of housebuilding going on around the outskirts of town which I think may change it's character a little and possibly affect things like schools etc.

It's a very different pace of life up there from the South East, it's one of the things I love about it!

Ellesmere is obviously further north, about 30 mins from Shrewsbury and there's no train station should you need one (the nearest one is Gobowen a few miles away, and that's only a local line, whereas from Shrewsbury you can get to Birmingham or Crewe, or there's a once a day direct train to London!). It is a lovely little town nonetheless!

I don't know much about Ludlow. I have heard Bridgnorth is very nice though.

It's literally IMPOSSIBLE to tell what it might be a picture of, isn't it? Grin

This is a better buy IMO

Page 17 and 18!

If you win, will this just be a pied a terre in London. Where will your other mansions be?

Well, I currently live in Shropshire, but I’d like to move to the south coast.

Just pop up to London for shopping and shows etc..

Not sure yet what else a multimillionaire does in their spare time. I’m sure I’ll figure it out.

MaidofKent78 · 09/12/2020 14:03

I do this ALL the time. I found the perfect house for us earlier this week. I wonder if I can persuade the owners to hold onto it for 2 years.....

goose1964 · 09/12/2020 14:04

I shouldn't have looked for my going home house, we currently live here to be near my very elderly in-laws but DD and her family are probably moving away once her DH graduates next year. So ever so often I look what's around www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/67721368#/media?id=media1

Zilla1 · 09/12/2020 14:07

@Squiffany

I think they hire well organised personal assistants. I'd volunteer to receive the enormous salary but am too chaotic.

I'd like to see an 'I'm a PA to a multi-millionaire, AMA'.

JabberGiraffe · 09/12/2020 14:07

there are fields front and back,

Those fields may be built on in the future, would you still like the house then?

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 09/12/2020 14:09

I can see why it's drawn you in, OP. I've just mentally redecorated and renovated it inside and out!

Zilla1 · 09/12/2020 14:10

@marielvanarkelstinks, did it cost a fortune as PPs suggested or did you renovate and decorate on a budget?

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 09/12/2020 14:11

The stripy grass is nice. The house itself is so… rectangular and boxy! But I realise it's just not my taste. Fingers crossed it stays on the market until you can afford it!

MRC20 · 09/12/2020 14:11

Sorry I'm no use to you I see why you love it. I'd snap it up if I lived in that part of the country xx

Toddlerteaplease · 09/12/2020 14:12

It's very dated and needs a lot of money spending on it. Nice garden though.

dreamhouse2020 · 09/12/2020 14:12

@janex1 apologies for both getting your name wrong and typing a " not a @ (I blame my keyboard!)

@ScatteredMama82 that is a really lovely house, and definitely would be a far more sensible purchase and better value for money. I may have to add that to my dreamhouse reserve list.

timeforawine · 09/12/2020 14:13

I know how you feel OP, i've found my dream house, but it's in the wrong village :-( we can't go for it as would mean when our daughter is older she couldn't go walk to meet her friends, we'd have to drive her, would also pull her out of her current catchment secondary school which is v good and also where her friends will go.
Just have to sit tight and wait, what's meant to be...

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 09/12/2020 14:14

@Zilla1 - knowing me, it cost an absolute arm and a leg. But hey, a lady can dream, right?

RedToothBrush · 09/12/2020 14:15

Every house was 'the house' when I was looking and couldn't afford it / wasn't in a position to move.

Strangely enough since we got our current house, I check nearly every day to see if there is another house I like more just for the sake of it.

Nothing matches...
