Is this really a standard word that most people know? (I thought it was a typo)

never in my life. 38.

AnnnaBananna · 08/12/2020 19:48

It’s a very common word. I’d be surprised if someone didn’t know what it means.

LightTheFlameThrower · 08/12/2020 19:48

Me neither! (Reasonably educated and literate age 41)

OP posts:
Findahouse21 · 08/12/2020 19:48

I think it's pretty common, yes.

LightTheFlameThrower · 08/12/2020 19:49

Is it monkeys a common word!

OP posts:
lockdownalli · 08/12/2020 19:50

Yes I think most people I know would use that word.

TJ17 · 08/12/2020 19:50

I thought this was a baby name suggestion. Just came here to see OP get flamed for it 😂

So nope never heard of it. About to Google now though! (And then mock anybody else who doesn't know what it means like some people will clearly do here at some point Grin)

AnnnaBananna · 08/12/2020 19:50

Is it monkeys a common word!
OP: Is this a standard word?
Me: Yes
OP: No it isn’t!

Well why ask then?!!

EckhartLolly · 08/12/2020 19:50

I don't see it used that often really but I'm familiar with the word.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 08/12/2020 19:51

But it is quite common. I probably last used it last week... discussing the dog and the damage done!

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 08/12/2020 19:51

I think most people I know would know it 🤷🏻‍♀️

cheezy · 08/12/2020 19:51

Does it mean to become faded in strong light? Off to google...

olympicsrock · 08/12/2020 19:51

Means to improve . I don’t often use it but understand it

Zilla1 · 08/12/2020 19:51

Arguably relatively rare but not esoteric! I wouldn't use it to communicate given there would be a fair proportion of many audiences who might not understand it. Communication is a balance of precision and comprehensibility.

CurlyMango · 08/12/2020 19:51

Never heard of it

TJ17 · 08/12/2020 19:51

Ahh thank you Google 🙏🏼

Must "ameliorate" my vocabulary 🤣

LightTheFlameThrower · 08/12/2020 19:52

I didn’t ask if it was a word you knew. I asked if it was a common word.

OP posts:
CareBear50 · 08/12/2020 19:52

It is not a common word but I believe it means to make things better (I think)

DorisDances · 08/12/2020 19:52

I use it fairly frequently. A useful word

EmilySpinach · 08/12/2020 19:52

Pretty standard, yes.

DorisDances · 08/12/2020 19:52

Dissipate

Meredithgrey1 · 08/12/2020 19:52

I know what it means and could use it correctly, I wouldn’t call it a frequently used word though

CuriousaboutSamphire · 08/12/2020 19:52

It isn't common, but then again, it is a useful and, in this house, used!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 08/12/2020 19:53

Abnegate!

Twillow · 08/12/2020 19:53

I do, but I wouldn't be surprised if people didn't know it. As a very broad generalisation, I do not find the British population to be widely literate.
The posts on Facebook that I see regularly without a full stop in sight never cease to amaze me.
