Inspired by the lovely thread about kindest thing strangers have done for you, and also a chance for me to share this horror.

When I was 19, I worked on the tills at a supermarket in my holidays from university.

A woman I was serving was staring at me, trying to get my attention as I scanned her stuff. I looked up at her and smiled. She said, in still the most condescending tone I've ever heard:

'Don't you wish you'd studied now?'

I was so floored and ashamed, I didn't say a thing back and just carried on scanning her things. Fact was I was actually at university, but even if I hadn't been....aghh!....still gets me.

What are yours?

My uni friend was a goth and also a lesbian. Sadly, she was no stranger to verbal abuse. Any time anyone shouted 'goth!' 'dyke!' or anything similar she used to reply with a loud ''thanks!' and a cheery wave. It confused them so much.

I once witnessed a goth girl walk past two girls who were sat on bicycle racks outside a takeaway. (I was waiting on an order). They caught her eye so she smiled at them. One of them told her to buy some new socially acceptable clothing (in a very rude sweary way). The goth girl doubled back and asked her where she could get such clothes as she loved what the girl was wearing especially her denim jacket, how it really suited her etc. The girl flounders a bit but replies that she got her jacket from Afflecks Palace. The goth girl smiles and says "Where do you think I get most of my stuff from?" This was in the 90s and I still see this girl about. She's not so gobby these days. I always thought it was a classy way to defuse a threatening situation.

Spat in my face. I was about 16 on a bus and asked him politely to move up a bit so people could get off. He didn't like that so he spat at me. Charming individual

Sad to hear so many retail/service workers have been treated so rudely!

I remember working in the fitting rooms in John Lewis. I was doing Christmas work just after graduating from uni. Wearing my work uniform and name badge. During a quiet moment I was looking at a jacket on the rail and telling a colleague that it was very nice but the price tag was very high. A woman walked past and commented that I should "get a job, then". I've been bewildered about it ever since!

What makes it worse is that she was out shopping for fancy clothes in the middle of a weekday, so I was hardly the one who looked the most aimless!
