To be alarmed at how much I fancy (fictional) Prince Philip?

I don’t think it’s just the actors, because I don’t generally like Matt Smith but both MS and Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip are 🔥

I’m sure in real life I would hate that kind of super-stiff-upper-lip patrician crap but in the Crown it works?!

Ok... who else?

Matt Smith yes. I'd totally jump on, not so much Tobias. Funnily enough, I think Prince Phillip is an absolute prick.

KatherineofTarragon · 07/12/2020 17:42

I personally do not find either of the actors who have portrayed him attractive. I think Netflix missed a trick there. The casting, in my view, was wrong. DOE has a kind of self assured, manly, old school self sufficient swagger that has not been captured by those actors. Maybe its the writing? I actually think someone like Lawerence Fox would have suited that role. A kind of gorgeous ,self assured , look how handsome i am arrogance, with blonde hair and an historical family name to trade on.

Real Prince Phillip , was a total dish in his day. I can see what her majesty saw! If i were 53 yrs older ... !

I don't think series 3 & 4 of The Crown have really captured The Duke at all. I do not think Netflix have been able to characterise him as he has been so adept and disciplined. That tells me a lot about the character of the man.

wimhoffbreather · 07/12/2020 17:45

Omg op thank you I thought I was the only one!!

Even more bizarrely, apart from his role in the crown I think Matt Smith is not hot at all, and I had no idea who Tobias Menzies was before this. And I’ve never liked the sound of Prince Philip!

It’s so weird. Thank you though I feel less alone haha

Lawrence Fox gorgeous?

MarshaBradyo · 07/12/2020 18:08

They were both excellent

Loved how they talked and weirdly could see similarity with William even though actors. Not that I fancy W

But all round very good and some great lines

MarshaBradyo · 07/12/2020 18:10

Just googled young PP. He was good looking

thecatsthecats · 07/12/2020 18:16

@SisterMichael

That has really made me laugh Mo! Grin

Ok I need to check out Outlander, what channel/network was it on?

If you want to keep your TM crush intact, don't watch it.

It's a great performance, don't get me wrong, but he's fucking terrifying in it.

dairyswim · 07/12/2020 18:19

Matt Smith doesn't do it for me, but as Prince Philip... Amazing considering that the character he plays is a complete arse

This is exactly how I feel.

I was initially disappointed with TM but a couple of episodes in and I was convinced.

It's made me look at Prince Philip in a completely different light.

wimhoffbreather · 07/12/2020 18:19

@KatherineofTarragon Laurence Fox? Good looking? We have different tastes Grin

But as far as I can tell Matt Smith and Tobias Menzies are successful, award wining actors. Laurence Fox’s biggest role was on Lewis...does he even act anymore? I though politics was his thing now

Movement05 · 07/12/2020 18:20

As WhatATime pointed out, Prince Phillip was an extremely fit, fanciable man back in the day.

Duvetstay · 07/12/2020 18:24

I did not know this re Kristin ST!

That's good gossip.

I agree that all Prince Philip incarnations (Inc the real one) are 🔥

I also have a huge thing about Jared Harris as Queens dad.

MoChridhe · 07/12/2020 18:44

SisterMichael, you will get to see Tobias full frontal in Outlander, only problem is that you will be too terrified by what he is doing to work out whether or not "it" is reasonably sized.

Mochudubh · 07/12/2020 18:44

May I suggest Rupert Penry-Jones rather than L Fox?

KatherineofTarragon · 07/12/2020 18:45

@IcedPurple yes. I think Lawrence Fox has a certain appeal. I find him appealing anyway. I also think he he has a certain young Prince Phillip about him. I like him and i think he would have been good in this role.

Each to their own. I cannot say i was personally attracted to either of the actors who have played the DOE. I personally do not think they encapsulated the Duke. But, a lot of you like the actors who have played him so i guess this all boils down to our personal choice.

Either way, the DOE was a very desirable man in his day and here we are decades later, discussing who played the most handsome and charismatic Duke, in a fiction.

I think ultimately they have portrayed the essence of a man and it is that that we have fallen for. We are just looking at a manifestation of that man in a different physical guise. I think what we have all fallen for is the character of the man and we have put our own physical look of that man on the DOE's character.

I guess i would like Lawrence Fox, some of you like Matt Smith, some of you like the other geezer. ( i apologise i do know his name) All of us seem to like the character, its just a different physical presentation.

I think this says a lot about real Prince Phillip and how we see him. We clearly all like a man like the Duke. What we are talking about here are actors playing him and who we would like to play him.

What we have all really fallen for here is the character of the man and some of us, the actor playing him. I personally have not fallen for the Netflix Duke (s).

Each to their own!

RPJ..does not have eyebrows. Eyebrows are very important in a man. Particularly in a man playing the DOE.

No, i cannot deal with a man with no eyebrows playing the the role of the DOE.

SisterMichael · 07/12/2020 19:38

Ok maybe I won’t watch Outlander then!

I would say that TM makes him seem a bit more background-y, with less of the forcefulness of MS, but maybe that’s just the writing/story arc of S3/4 generally, he’s just sitting around.

Me too @SisterMichael. Matt Smith is gorgeous as Prince Phillip although I don't like either.

@IcedPurple yes. I think Lawrence Fox has a certain appeal. I find him appealing anyway. I also think he he has a certain young Prince Phillip about him. I like him and i think he would have been good in this role.

Politics aside, I could see the appeal, though I wouldn't go so far as to call him 'gorgeous'. Not sure about 'young' either since he's in his early 40s, only 4 years younger than Tobias Menzies. More to the point I just don't think he's much of an actor.

tallduckandhandsome · 07/12/2020 19:48

Nope, too reedy.

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 07/12/2020 19:55

I fancied Tobias Menzies in Outlander as Frank. Frank was just the right amount of nerdy and hot. I'd let him lecture me about the Jacobites anytime, and from what I remember, he appears to be good in bed (or in castle ruins) in the pilot episode.

I can't say I fancied him as much as PP. And disturbingly, the Prince Charles guy really, really reminds me of my ex who was a total knob. It's the posture and the way he speaks down to Diana when they're fighting. Made me shudder.

KatherineofTarragon · 07/12/2020 20:16

When you get to my age darling (49) he is young!

I thought he was fab in Victoria!

I'm 51!

But yes, Lawrence Fox at 42 is too old to play a 'young' Prince Philip.

Wasn’t Paul Bettany going to be PP at one point? I can’t remember what happened there.

Ooh i love Tobias Menzies! I first saw him in Persuasion and have loved him ever since. He is evil in Outlander but i still definitely would if i got a chance.
