@TheChippendenSpook

I didn't know until this week that the Statue of Liberty was made of copper and was therefore originally copper coloured and it turned to its greeny colour over time.
i did not know this!!!
RainbowsAndFrogs · 09/12/2020 15:22

I didn't know that about the statue of liberty either! Don't know what I thought it was made of (green stone?) Grin

@pinkbalconyrailing
I googled it and it is actually a Garth Brooks song - he co wrote it. He came from a blended family but they were never allowed use terms like "half"or "step" sibling.

DH and I heard a female Country and Western singer singing it one time and we thought - what a lovely sentiment.

RainbowsAndFrogs · 09/12/2020 15:29

Also embarrassingly, I only realised this week that netflix is flicks (films) on the Internet 🤣🙈 i dont know how that didn't register with my brain

I didn't realise how many people would actually challenge my original post! A quick Google will show that it dates back to the 12th German century where numerous websites will agree that the original meaning was the opposite of what it is now.

@Latenightreader

I thought Ashby de la Zouch was made up for the Adrian Mole books. I discovered I was wrong whilst map reading in my late twenties. The other occupants of the car thought it hilarious.

I recently confessed to my mother that I used to believe that belly buttons were created by the doctor tying a knot in the cord, and it slowly shrank back into the body. I thought that the doctor’s skill affected the shape (innie/outie). I only realised this wasn’t the case when my daughter was born two years ago. I was 40...

I used to think the same about the belly buttons:) also when I was a teenager I was waiting at the doctors reception, the young mother came in and started to undress her baby, I caught a glimpse of the umbilical cord and I thought it was his penis and was quite horrified by its size in relation to his body, I remember thinking that's why this poor boy had to see a doctor. I only realised my mistake when pregnant and reading about newborn care.

@Weedsnseeds1

The Netherlands has twelve provinces: Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland, Zeeland, Noord-Brabant, Utrecht, Flevoland, Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, Gelderland and Limburg.
Shouldn't Amsterdam be included with them? I thought that was also in the Netherlands?
Northernlass99 · 09/12/2020 17:24

I didn't know that a German Shepherd Dog is the same as an Alsatian. Only found out because me and friend were talking to someone and she said she had two dogs, a GSD AND and Alsation. My friend told her they were the same. Apparently the British stopped calling them GSD's after the war due to anti-german feeling at the time. But now we do tend to call them GSDs.

pinkbalconyrailing · 09/12/2020 17:33

I always thought an Alsatian had longer hair than a GSD? My neighbour has GSD and they are not as fluffy as a Alsatian 🤔
SusannahSophia · 09/12/2020 17:49

I think maybe you know a long haired GSD and a short haired one. Alsatians are the same as GSD, I think. As PP said, anti German feeling led to them being called Alsatians instead of GSDs.

as a kid i thought the past was on blac and white like the films i just couldnt work out when it changed-maybe when they made wizard of oz

Sweetpea1532 · 09/12/2020 18:40

Just found out not too long ago that the red bit in the center of a pitted green olive was actually a type of sweet red chili pepper. I knew it was a piece of pimento but had no idea what a pimento was
Felt like an idiot when my friend was talking about it...I pretended I knew all alongGrin

KitchenDancefloor · 09/12/2020 20:05

I found out last month what lime pickle is made of.

I thought it was 'pickle' preserved in lime juice.

Turns out it is limes, pickled.

I only worked this out when I took a large dollop and saw a big segment of actual lime. I have no idea what I thought the 'pickle' but was.

I managed to keep that thought to myself because I knew my family would be remorseless in mocking me. But inside I was like, oh YEAH!

I've seen black and white used in modern tv programmes to indicate that what is being shown is in the past. It changes to colour when they bring it up to date.

Maybe some tv programme makers think life was black and white like you.

For some reason it really irritates me. Can't they just put a date or time difference on the screen.

Until very recently I thought you could drive through the channel tunnel just like a normal tunnel. I literally thought this until I went to book it for next summer 😂

sticksticks · 09/12/2020 20:20

I think it's a law of MN that every time this thread is started it must include a debate on the petrol pointers on cars and the settings on toasters

It's also a law that it must mention Gibralter.

@RosesAndHellebores

Apologies to *@sashh my @ should have been for @drinkingwineoutofamug* - honest question and relevant to thread: does it taste the same from a mug - OK if mulled I guess.
Tastes no different. For information you get 3 mugs to an average sized bottle. The wine glasses will come out for Xmas.

There are 3 tunnels , one to France one back from France and the 3rd is a service tunnel with a road , even has white lines down the middle!

I don't know this Blush

chomalungma · 09/12/2020 22:10

I was quite surprised to see that the tunnel isn't a go down at an angle, go straight, go up at an angle.

It's 'bumpy' and goes up and down depending on the rocks it's going through.

and we stopped calling them Alsatians again because in 1970s Alsatians got a reputation for being viscious guard dogs, and people were scared of them, Whereas in reality they are not like that at all.

Northernlass99 · 10/12/2020 14:15

This thread is in the Daily Fail today. Lots of their readers sneering at how stupid we are Hmm.

Graphista · 10/12/2020 17:30

@msssm Amsterdam is a city not a province. That's like saying why wasn't Coventry included in a list of our counties - hope that helps you understand? It's fascinating how different countries organise themselves administratively/politically.

I only fairly recently learned that Italy as a whole singularly governed country is a relatively new country as unification didn't happen until the 19th century.

@Northernlass99 I can't get worried about that DF readers are generally not the brightest themselves so I very much doubt there are a majority who don't have huge gaps in their own knowledge. Nobody knows everything and it is more sensible to acknowledge that and seek to fill those gaps than sneer at others for not knowing things you did know.
