I live in Florida and happen to grow pineapples. Not because I’m crazy about them, but I can’t bear to throw the tops away. It just seems so wasteful when they grow so nicely and then I have like 20 pineapples that all ripen at once and MORE tops to plant! Seriously, everyone I work with has been gifted damn pineapples and must think I’m a crazy pineapple person. Anyway, here’s a picture of one that is just growing at the beginning, and it takes another couple of months to become an edible fruit. And if you’d ever like to grow one ( they do well inside in pots, but get bigger than you’d think) just twist the top off of one instead of cutting and you’ll see the rootless under. Put it in water and in a week you’ll have a plant. I didn’t know until I grew up and am often sorry I do!

TinySongstress · 06/12/2020 00:08

@RumJerrySailorRum

Technically I KNOW how to do car stuff, but that doesn't mean I CAN actually do it.

Or want to do it.....fuck that, my hands would get dirty!!

But on the theme of cars, in a lot of them if you leave your finger on the 'open' button it will eventually open your windows and vice versa.
Great for letting fresh air in on hot days before you actually get in it!!

Only if the window motor on the regulator has the 'comfort' setting. Not all motors have this function.
@anothernamereally

Surely it IS 'you've got another thing coming' not 'think' ????

If you think that... you've genuinely got another think coming Grin
It is 'another think' as in - if you think XYZ then you should think again/reconsider your position because you're wrong (or are going to be disappointed)

Another thing makes no sense.

I only "got" the joke about the chicken crossing the road last year. I'm 39. DH nearly wet himself laughing when he realised...

Bikingbear · 06/12/2020 00:14

Some of these are crazy, Piggy going to marketShock, Seconds out, kidneys, that's weird.

But I've a question why is it THE Netherlands, we never say THE France or THE Germany, but people talk about THE USA or America, never THE America?

Oooohbehave · 06/12/2020 00:16

@Feminist10101

Really? Your 10 year old can change a tyre?

With someone finishing the tightening, yes.

I changed the oil in my dad’s car aged 6.

These are excellent life skills to have and the sooner the better.

(I refurbished a house - including plastering and replacing electrics at 18. I’ve fitted and tiled all 4 bathrooms in this house including the slate floors, fitted the wooden flooring throughout the downstairs myself. I learned from my dad and DD is learning from me. I don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t give their kids these skills. See also cooking, cleaning....)

Oh my God, you’re amazing, please tell us more.

Most wine isn’t vegetarian or vegan.

cariadlet · 06/12/2020 00:24

I assume that we prefix USA and Netherlands with the because USA is short for United States of America and Netherlands means Low Countries. We usually use an article (eg the, a or an) when referring to a noun phrase. It's the same with the UAE because that's an abbreviation for the United Arab Emirates.

Countries which have a one word name wouldn't need "the" any more than other proper nouns need "the". We don't say I'm going to the Birmingham or the Liverpool.

PrivateD00r · 06/12/2020 00:28

The belly button thing - basically when you are a fetus, you have a hole in your tummy. The cord contains blood vessels which are part of the fetal circulation, they continue into the fetus passing through the 'hole' in the tummy. They takes the fetal blood to the placenta to be filled back up with oxygen and nutrients and then back to baby. When the baby is born, the cord is clamped to occlude the blood vessels and then cut. A plastic clamp or cord tie goes on to totally shut off the blood vessels, which then just shrivel up as no longer needed. The 'hole' heals over really quickly and then the stump of the cord falls off revealing the healed 'hole' which is now the belly button.

Fetal circulation is really different due to the inability to use the lungs. As soon as the baby breathes at birth , the circulation starts to change and various little ducts close up as no longer needed (if they don't close then the baby has a hole in their heart'. )

The cord is covered in thick jelly to protect the blood vessels within from occlusion during labour.

Sorry that is probably far too long and boring, I find it all fascinating!

TaraR2020 · 06/12/2020 00:35

Woah, scampi is not a fish??

Also - knights didn't wear their armour all the time, and so - often being dashing - they could have taken off their white satin clothes, put on their white satin pyjamas and got into white satin sheets for sexy times with the damsel they rescued

wonderstuff · 06/12/2020 00:36

Whales are mammals.

Twin towers were iconic because they were by far tallest towers in NYC, completely changed the cityscape now they're gone.

Found out today tomatoes are native to the Americas so there was no tomato sauce in Italy until 16th C.

Fillybuster · 06/12/2020 00:41

@AthelstaneTheUnready Pontefract isn’t in Wales? Are you sure?

Mind. Blown.

Off to RTFT

RozHuntleysStump · 06/12/2020 00:42

Where I grew up we could pick up radio stations from other regions. Used to listen to ‘lynx fm’ for years. Just a few years ago it was actually ‘lincs fm’. The constant references to Lincolnshire must have completely gone over my head. 😂

AlCalavicci · 06/12/2020 00:47

@BlackForestCake , he is also Uther Pendragon in the tv series Arthur and IMO has got better with age >>swoon

user686833 · 06/12/2020 00:53

@PrivateD00r Wow! You're right that is fascinating. Now I'm just heading off for an internet black hole about fetal circulation instead of sleeping.

SusannahSophia · 06/12/2020 00:54

Raisins and sultanas are dried grapes, it’s true, but currants are dried currants, as in blackcurrants and redcurrants.

Quaagars · 06/12/2020 00:55

That Pontefract isn't in Wales

Grin It's in West Yorkshire! (Not RTFT but needed saying lol)
Quaagars · 06/12/2020 00:59

@timeforanewstart
I thought pineapples grew on trees like coconuts

I blame Black Lace telling us to shake them.
Apparently they grow in the ground according to google searches over the past few years lol
