Passing pre made food off as your own

Lighthearted

Tonight I "cooked" for the family. I had gone to the supermarket earlier to do the weekly shop and for quickness I picked up a fresh family size lasagne .
Cooked it in the oven but added some extra cheese on top to make it look more " home made "
Served it up just before everyone returned home, after hiding all packaging in the bin and passed it off as my own.

It went down a treat not a mouthful left. Everyone said it was one of the nicest thing I made. Technically I did cook it, in the oven anyway...

Do I feel bad no 🤣

Anyone else passed off pre made food as homemade cooking ?

Off to Tesco soon Grin

My lasagne always goes wrong

A friend who makes lovely cakes told me (in secret) that she often uses the cheap cake mix you get in a bag for about 50p. Used myself and passed of as my cake much nicer than one I’ve made from scratch

I don’t think it would damage any of my relationships if I was caught out

Elfieishere · 05/12/2020 09:47

I don’t understand the point in lying about it.. why try and make out you are better then you are. Just say you bought it.

Parker231 · 05/12/2020 09:55

Why not try and pass it off as your own - it’s funny!

We’re having Christmas dinner from Cook - wonder if anyone will know it’s all been prepared by someone else! (Obviously they will - I don’t think I’ve ever prepared a meal from scratch).

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 05/12/2020 09:55

The thread is lighthearted .....

lazylinguist · 05/12/2020 09:59

No I've never done this, and I can't imagine being fooled by someone else doing it either, unless they'd bought it fresh from an Italian deli or something. Supermarket ready meals do not taste anything like home-cooked food, unless you have no taste, or tastebuds.

madcatladyforever · 05/12/2020 10:00

No, I don't find it necessary to lie to family. Why would you?

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 05/12/2020 10:04

I guess some posters here didn’t go along with the Santa/tooth fairy stories etc Halo

And some on here are just terrible parents/partners/human beings Grin

GreekOddess · 05/12/2020 10:06

Yes I did twice. Once with a posh lasagne from Cook and the other time with a Thai takeaway from our local restaurant.

Ds1 was little at the time and we couldn't be bothered with the faff of cooking. Both meals went down like a treat but I felt a bit of a fraud Blush

Reminds me of the Miranda Marks and Spencer song

Well the bosom hoikers are out in force this morning aren't they ? Grin God help anyone who attempts to have a sense of humour. Yep , my relationship with my family is irretrievably damaged because i once told my great aunt her hair was lovely (it looked like an American football helmet ) I'm sure it would have been so much better to tell her and upset a 70 odd year old woman because we should never lie to our families {gasp the horror}.

Ds1 doesn't quite understand the concept of food being sold pre made at shops (which is seriously not to say he doesn't get fed it...reasonable mix in our house of homemade and the freezer life saviour meals) so regularly asks me what the recipe was or how I made xyz.

I've gently pointed out I didn't make the potato waffles and in fact on another occasion there wasn't a recipe for lettuce Grin , it was just lettuce.

When he asked me how I made the baked beans I answered "I opened the can" and he looked very confused. So now I just answer with what the ingredients were and he assumes I made them (possibly in ds1 head I actually grew the beans who knows ).

This led to a confusing moment when he told DP that his baked beans weren't the same as mummy's and they were from the same can (half saved over for the next day).

Meh if it passes it passes. No guilt required . And apparently according to some posters if you fess up it will cause irretrievably family breakdown , the world will end and you will have to wander about with the word liar flashing above your head as penance.

I wouldn't risk fessing up if I were you.

Sounds like lots of posters would never by prepared meals and make their pasta sauce from scratch. I say thank goodness to sauces in a jar (DT’s were weaned on pouches and jars), ready prepared vegetables, frozen pizzas and rice in microwave packets!

Ginfordinner · 05/12/2020 10:37

I'll happily admit to buying the odd ready meal. I don't like pre-made pasta sauce, and as it is so easy to make, I admit to always making my own pasta sauce Grin

And I am a convert to microwave rice in packets. One packet is the right amount for the two of us.

BonnieDundee · 05/12/2020 21:05

I buy ready meals.on a.regular basis. I.just dont get.the point of lying about it. As if I'm a bad person for buying ready madeConfused

jgjgjgjgjg · 05/12/2020 21:17

But surely in the time it took to make a trip to the supermarket you could have just made a lasagne? Even if you used sauces from a jar, at least you would have made a bit of an effort?

Parker231 · 05/12/2020 21:21

We had this tonight - Chicken and mushroom lasagna from Cook. It was lovely. No way could you make it as good as this. DH got it out of the freezer and yes, I knew it was ready prepared.

Because its soul destroying having to make an effort every single day to think about what to cook and actually make it. It's all right for people who only cook once in a blue moon to spend an entire saturday in the kitchen making a 4 course fabulous dinner to feed their guests using every gadget and cooking implement in every drawer and cupboard but to do that 7days a week 52 weeks a year is drudgery. And I have better things to do with my time (COVID excepting)

BlokeNumber9 · 05/12/2020 22:35

I never ever do this.
Well hardly ever.
Oh alright sometimes.
But no more than once a week.
Except when things are stressful.
Which is usually.

Should of added extra cheese for that more homemade look . Actually on second thoughts dont , incase your relationship becomes damaged by doing this. Grin

This reminds me of the time I went to some school event with my nephew and sister and there was a cake competition, my sister Baked a cake and came second after someone who had “made” a chocolate cake that was clearly those £2 ones you get in the coop, it even had the card still cello taped around it, we were shocked that people actually believe it was her own.

Regularsizedrudy · 06/12/2020 00:45

That’s some 1950s housewife bullshit

CrotchBurn · 06/12/2020 00:57

🤷‍♀️ its not that posters have had a humour bypass. I mean the image is amusing! It's more like why in 7 pages has the poster not answered the question that well over a dozen people have asked which is: why?

Why did I do it ?

Because it's my sense of humour ... I thought I would try it to see what happened , my family now know . They thought it was hysterical, my husband gave me a high 5 .

I posted this has lighthearted. No other reason .
