Passing pre made food off as your own

Lighthearted

Tonight I "cooked" for the family. I had gone to the supermarket earlier to do the weekly shop and for quickness I picked up a fresh family size lasagne .
Cooked it in the oven but added some extra cheese on top to make it look more " home made "
Served it up just before everyone returned home, after hiding all packaging in the bin and passed it off as my own.

It went down a treat not a mouthful left. Everyone said it was one of the nicest thing I made. Technically I did cook it, in the oven anyway...

Do I feel bad no 🤣

Anyone else passed off pre made food as homemade cooking ?

^No, of course not, whatever for? Are you so short of compliments that you need to take credit for someone else's work? Blimey, that's a shame*

YES! Some people ARE short of compliments. Lucky you to be SO perfect.

SarahAndQuack · 03/12/2020 22:56

Adding cheese to pre-bought lasagne is mandatory.

Being so utterly under your family's thumb that you hid the packaging? Weird as fuck.

Starting a thread about it on an internet forum? Doubly weird.

No , not really , but thank you for the recommendation 😉

I've not done it myself OP, but my friend sort of accidentally volunteered to make someone's wedding cake (she didn't actually offer but the bride thought she had!) The bride then made matters worse casually revealing very near to the wedding that each tier of the cake had to cater to a different dietary need for various guests. My friend was so stressed out about it that in the end she just bought loads of different sized cakes from Waitrose, stacked them up, covered them with icing sugar and fresh flowers, and swore us all to secrecy. As far as I know the bride has no idea 😂

Blondiney · 03/12/2020 23:00

I've made lasagna from scratch before and apparently it was so good everyone thought I'd bloody bought it! Heathens.

Zebracat · 03/12/2020 23:02

I have to do the opposite and replicate ready meals for our fussy teen. My Asda extra value chicken curry is very very good.😬

SarahAndQuack · 03/12/2020 23:03

Jokes usually need to be funny, though.

Bubbletrouble43 · 03/12/2020 23:05

Dp tells me Mil has more than once " made" pasties for visiting relatives ( we are in Cornwall) which involves sending her husband out to buy frozen uncooked pasties from the local bakery which she pops in the oven before they arrive. Apparently she puts an apron on and scatters flour over herself and her kitchen to make it a bit more convincing. She's great.

PyongyangKipperbang · 03/12/2020 23:06

I havent but I will now that I know that there is good one out there!

DS loves lasagne but it is such a PITA to make and is probably more expensive to make than to buy, so I am going to get the Tesco one and see what his reaction is. I will tell him afterwards (he takes the bin out so will see the packaging anyway!), and I am keeping everything crossed that he prefers the tesco one!

Bubbletrouble43 · 03/12/2020 23:07

What's your problem, sarahandquack???

knittingaddict · 03/12/2020 23:08

It never occurred to me to do this, but then I'm a decent cook. We do have ready meals sometimes, but I really can't imagine a supermarket family sized lasagne being close to a homemade one. Shop bought ones tend to be gloopy and obviously processed. Also why lie to your family. It's a bit odd.

SquirrelFan · 03/12/2020 23:10

@lyralalala That's the loveliest story!

Deadringer · 03/12/2020 23:10

Jesus the bitching on this thread.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 03/12/2020 23:11

I did a cake club with friends

It wasthe Christmas one and one friend made stollen

Best stollen ive ever tasted, i asked her for the recipe and she said she’d drop it through my door

Another friend asked her and she fessed up that it was waitrose 😯

What the hell was she going to pop through my door!!!

knittingaddict · 03/12/2020 23:11

@UntamedWisteria

Shop bought lasagne has a nasty gloopy texture.

No-one could ever mistake it for homemade.

Grin Great minds.
Crunchymum · 03/12/2020 23:12

Didn't they notice it was different to your usual homemade lasagne?

(I make my own lasagne about once every leap year so I'm not judging)

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 03/12/2020 23:12

Ive just seen someone recommended COOK

Worst fish pie ive ever tasted...m&s heaps better

mena51 · 03/12/2020 23:13

I went to a christmas party once with food that I had 'made' - went down a treat and I'd do it again!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/12/2020 23:13

No lies involved, but one of my friends never, ever cooks - everything they eat is eg Charlie Bingham, M&S and so on. I was really intrigued one day when she mentioned chicken fajitas were in the oven, and asked how she did them. M&S. Family of four so must be very expensive!

We have an “oven tea” at least once a week. Often lasagne, or a chicken pie or similar. Since WFH I tend to walk to M&S at lunchtime as it’s approximately 10,000 steps between there and back, and we have a freezer full of yellow stickered oven things.

CantStandMeow · 03/12/2020 23:14

We had the same lasagna this evening, I'm even more of a heathen than you. Ours was microwaved Shock Halo

Parker231 · 03/12/2020 23:15

Some ready meals are equivalent to an excellent restaurant so much better than spending ages making your own which may not be as good. There is nothing wrong with supermarket meals and if you can pass it off as your own, have a good joke about it afterwards with your family.

knittingaddict · 03/12/2020 23:17

I made a moussaka the other day for the first time in years. Tasted good, but what a bloody faff it was to make. Pots and pans everywhere. Never again.

LawnFever · 03/12/2020 23:18

@Deadringer

Not the point of the thread but i would really like to know which lasagne it is. A shop bought lasagne that tastes as good as homemade is the holy grail for me, its such a feckin faff to make.
Agreed, I’ve never ever had a shop bought lasagna that’s as good as home made, where is this magic lasagna from?? Grin
keeprocking · 03/12/2020 23:19

A male colleague had friends round for pasta and he did garlic bread, he sliced garlic and put it between sliced white bread, cold!
