To be gutted at losing my benefit

I am going to inherit some money from sale of parents house and have told universal credit to close my claim but I'm gutted about it.
I have always struggled never had 2 Penny's to rub together and it just so happens I will go over the 16000 mark with this money and know i must sound greedy but my income is very low and i am scared this money will all go on living costs.

YANBU. It's shit. You'll get people on here telling you "if you've got savings you don't need benefits" but then it means people on benefits are never able to better themselves.

I am on the old style working tax credits which didn't take savings into account so I was able to save up and buy a house meaning I no longer need to claim housing benefit which I was getting before. I feel sorry for people on UC who won't get this opportunity.

puttergal · 03/12/2020 19:08

Have you got enough to put down a deposit for a house?
I think then you are allowed to keep the money?

Helpmylecreuset · 03/12/2020 19:09

Is the money enough to buy/part buy a property? Then you will only lose the housing element.

Clappingforjoy · 03/12/2020 19:09

I suffer with depression and health conditions and cant do so much work.

Or there are schemes with housing associations where you can buy a quarter share of a house and pay rent on the rest.

lakesideadvent · 03/12/2020 19:11

I would look into shared ownership on a flat as a possibility?

@Hoppinggreen I've reported your nasty bitter comment.

mermaidbunny · 03/12/2020 19:12

What an awful comment to make. If you can’t say anything nice, perhaps scroll on by.

Clappingforjoy · 03/12/2020 19:12

You can splurge on something, or a few things to get under savings cap, that way it won’t all go on living costs.

purpleme12 · 03/12/2020 19:13

I get it. If i inherited anything it would all go on living costs then eventually i'd go on top up benefit again.

Clappingforjoy · 03/12/2020 19:13

Thanks for the support guys

Clappingforjoy · 03/12/2020 19:15

Soontobe60 · 03/12/2020 19:16

OP, you haven’t earned that money, it’s a gift. I don’t understand why you think you should be getting state benefits when you’ve got above the savings threshold.
You’ve had UC to top up your earnings, which is precisely what it’s for. Now you will have to use the money off your parent to do the same. That’s fair in my opinion.

Clappingforjoy · 03/12/2020 19:16

Probably about 10.000 over

Can you use some of it towards a course or business start up? Sorry for your loss.

Clappingforjoy · 03/12/2020 19:17

I understand what your saying soontobe but I just cant help feeling this way

OP posts:
Diverseduvet · 03/12/2020 19:18

Spend some of the money on your house, new carpets, beds, decorating, then claim when you hit under 16k.

Biker47 · 03/12/2020 19:18

Why shouldn't it go on living costs? My wages have to go on living costs every month. You're really expecting sympathy because you'll have £26,000 and you don't want to spend it on your living costs and want the taxpayers to keep on footing the bill instead?
